It is expected that Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will inaugurate a new campus for its regional centre in Madurai on June 7, 2010. The Madurai centre presently covers 17 districts of Tamil Nadu with 12,000 students. The new campus has been established at a cost of Rs 5 crore on a land allotted by the state government of Tamil Nadu.
So far, the present centre has been functioning as regular study and vocational centre and is also active in distributing study material to nine regional centres in India through its own printing office in Coimbatore.
