Foreign students who are aspiring to get admission in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) through JEE Advanced or GATE exams will now have to pay Rs 6 lakh annually as fee, an official said.
The annual tuition fee of Rs 6 lakh for foreign students was fixed after a meeting of IIT Council, the governing body responsible for all the IITs across the country, an official from the HRD Ministry said on the condition of anonymity.
For the first time, the council will be conducting entrance exam in Singapore, UAE, Ethiopia and SAARC nations except Pakistan next year. The step has been taken to attract more international talent for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses available at the premier engineering institutes of India.
Earlier this year, the tuition fee for Indian students at IITs was increased from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2 lakh. However, there is a total fee waiver for the differently-abled and students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) category, Scheduled Tribes (ST) category and economically weaker sections of the society.
