India is observing National Education Day today. On November 11, it is marked as education day as it is the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
He was the first education minister in India and a pioneer of the education system. He was born on November 11, 1888 and died on February 22, 1958.
He has brought potential reforms in the education system and contributed towards nation building. Azad served India as education minister from 1947-1958.
On 11 September 2008, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) announced that November 11 will be celebrated as National Education Day to commemorate the birthday and remembering the contribution of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in the field of education. Since then, National Education Day is celebrated without declaring it a holiday.
