The courses on offer are engineering, Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Applications

Chandigarh: Punjab Technical University (PTU) has allowed direct admission into the second semester to fill vacant engineering and management seats in affiliated colleges.

The courses on offer are engineering, Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Computer Applications (MCA). The students can do the first semester later.

Those admitted to the second semester directly will attend classes during summer vacations for the first semester and appear for the exam at their convenience.

Classes for first semester courses started in July and those for the second semester are to start in January.

Set up in 1997, the university has nearly 110 colleges under it offering engineering courses and 139 colleges offering management and computer application courses.

The university had asked all affiliated colleges to admit students directly in the second semester by January 22.

“The idea is to fill seats. This system has been adopted by many leading foreign universities,” a PTU official said.

To compensate for the first semester, students would attend classes between the second and third semester, the official said.

At PTU, an engineering course is of eight semesters while MCA and MBA courses are of four semesters each.

To fill the seats, college officials from Punjab go as far as the northeastern region and Nepal to bring in students.

UGC Norms for NET Illegal, Rules Kerala High Court

The court said that ‘fixing of higher aggregate marks for three categories, that too just before the announcements of results, cannot be justified

Thiruvananthapuram: A bench of the Kerala High Court has declared the new University Grants Commission (UGC) norms for National Eligibility Test (NET) illegal saying it was ‘not supportable by law’.

“The power of UGC ought to have been exercised in a proper, fair and reasonable manner,” Justice TR Ramachandran Nair said while allowing a batch of petitions challenging the new norms.

The court said that ‘fixing of higher aggregate marks for three categories, that too just before the announcements of results, cannot be justified as the same was “not supportable by law”.

It also declared that all those who have obtained minimum marks prescribed in the notification have cleared NET and appropriate follow up action be taken to issue certificates to them within one month.

As per the new norms, candidates in general category have to score aggregate of 65 per cent in all three NET papers to be eligible for college and university lectureship while OBC candidates need to score 60 per cent and SC/ST candidates 55 per cent.

Previous norms had stipulated that the general category had to get 40 per cent in Paper I and Paper II and 50 per cent in Paper III. In case of OBC, SC/ST students, the qualifying percentage was 35, 35, 45 and 35, 35, 40 in all three papers.

The declaration of new norms had been opposed by students who appeared in the examination in June this year.

DU to Offer 4 Year Degree Course From 2013

The four- year degree will be called “Baccalaureate Honours” and will include research components

New Delhi: The Executive Council of Delhi University on Wednesday approved the proposal for the four year undergraduate programme from the 2013-14 academic sessions. Now Students who get admitted to Delhi University (DU) in 2013 will graduate with an Honours degree in four years instead of three.

Under the new system, the four year degree will be called “baccalaureate honours” and will include research components.

Altogether 11 foundation courses, compulsory for all students, on governance and citizenship, language, literature and creativity, geographical and socio-economic diversity, psychology communication, life skills and culture and civilization have been added in the new course structure.

However, all students need not take the four-year honours course. Students can opt for a two-year “associate baccalaureate” degree or a three-year “baccalaureate” degree. Only those working towards an Honours degree will have to take the four-year course.

This four year long course will also allow interdisciplinary work. For example, a student of Physics honours will be allowed to opt for Political Science as a minor discipline. The curriculum will also include extra-curricular activities and sports.

For a lot of students who wish to pursue their masters’ degree from foreign universities, it is good news. Most universities want students to have completed a four year undergraduate degree and many are rejected because India follows a 10+2+3 pattern.

Delhi Private Schools Can Run Second Shift

The shift can be run after regular school hours, however, it would be a separate entity with no common teachers or other school staff

New Delhi: Private unaided schools in the city can now run a second shift , as per the decision taken by the Delhi School Education Advisory Board (DESAB)) this week.

The shift can be run after regular school hours. However, it would have to be run as a separate entity with no common teachers or other school staff, says the decision.

Private city schools have been asking for a second shift, saying it would put their infrastructure to optimum use and benefit more students. The DSEAB said maximum points would have to be given to the ‘neighbourhood’ criterion for nursery admissions.

The board, which includes the education minister, principal secretary and director, education, also said that for admission into nursery, a child cannot be older than three years, 11 months and 30 days as on March 30 of the academic year in which admission is sought.
The upper limit for KG is exactly a year more than the nursery limit and two years more for class I.

The Board, however, decided that some relaxation in upper age-limit for children with special needs would be worked out. The lower age limit for nursery class is three years. The DSEAB had been asked to give its opinion on double shifts in private schools.

While allowing second shifts, the board also was decided that a committee would be constituted to work out the details.

According to R C Jain, president, Delhi State Public Schools Management Association, who is also a member of the board, “The second shift schools will be a separate entity with a separate set of teachers and there will be no compromise on salaries.

Moreover, there will be no transfer of first shift students to the second shift. The admission criteria in the second shift will be same as that of the first shift with 25% reservation for EWS category under RTE Act.”

Schools which will be following the point system in the new admission season starting from January 1, 2013 have been asked to give maximum weightage to distance from school.
