Online Education and Blended Learning is here to stay and might help shape our country’s skill and education landscape in the future. To prepare our students for the future workforce, schools across India need to practice Computational thinking and deliver context-based learning through skill-building programs and tech-oriented pedagogies.

Government should increase budgetary allocation to educational institutes and encourage them to offer creative education programs to students. Courses on 3D Printing, AI, Animation, Augmented Reality, Automation, Coding, Data Science, Design, IoT, Multimedia and Virtual Reality related courses can nurture student creativity and encourage innovation which is the key to success for ‘Make in India’ program.

EdTech will play a vital role in supporting schools across India to deliver online learning to students. To bring changes in the teaching pedagogies, assessments, course modules and syllabuses would require more investment in the education sector. Government should also announce programs to improve internet connectivity infrastructure across the nation, provide access to affordable 5G devices, and help EdTech players with a robust online learning infrastructure.

Government should provide research incentives to encourage academia-industry collaboration, multidisciplinary research, and implementation of tech-based pedagogies to accelerate the digital transformation in education.

Education makes people independent, builds confidence and self-esteem, which is important for the development of a country. By establishing a ‘National Education Bank’ that gives education loans at the lowest possible interest rate will reduce the financial burden of students and ensure equitable access to quality education in the country.

Reduction in the GST slab for investment in the education sector from the current 18% to 5% will attract more investors in the education sector. Investment in education is crucial to building a globally competitive education system.

Government can support EdTech players with a budget that offers support to them in terms of finance, technology, and longer-term tax exemptions.

“We hope that the budgetary allocation to the overall education sector will see an increase this year, as the last two years have severely impacted both institutions and students, with a shift to the online mode. A fund allocation for the advancement in Technology Infrastructure to help enable institutes to invest in the latest technology tools, software, and high-speed connectivity will surely deliver a seamless high-quality learning experience to their students. The Government could also develop an education loan scheme for the ease in accessibility, disbursement and repayment terms which will support students from the lesser privileged strata and the deeper pockets of the country to benefit from.”

Q. Can you tell us about Corporate Gurukul and how you are planning to expand your business?

A – We are one of the leading ed-tech firms headquartered in Singapore and are focused on developing the youth across Asia through applied experiential learning. Founded in 2007, we have grown exponentially at a CAGR of 150% in the last 3 years. We have established our presence across 21 countries in South East Asia, South Asia, India and the Middle East. We look forward to strengthening this presence in the FY 2022.

Corporate Gurukul plans to achieve $ 5 million in FY 2022. Along with this, we are planning to expand our footprints in the US by the end of this year, Canada by 2023 and the UK/ Europe by 2024. Furthermore, we are keen on tapping the African market as well. We are aiming for a minimum growth of 2x in revenues and 3x in student numbers in the overall space every year, till 2025. Corporate Gurukul delivers curated academic internship and research interventions using tools like AI and Design Thinking. We will expand our product line and introduce new Programmes for schools in Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Engineering and Business and Economics. We will also be launching new customised electives for Business School students so that the learners are able to gather real-world experiences and first-hand learning in the domains of Marketing, Finance, Logistics and Operations.

Q – What kind of learnings is the company implementing to help students?

A – We offer short-term certified online/ on-campus internships as well as research interventions with top universities and corporate partners. We facilitate research and innovation using Design Thinking and internships using AI for schools and universities. Academic internships in Data Analytics, Machine Learning and Deep Learning are designed for undergraduates. We seamlessly combine applied learning, research and project-based approach in the real-world setting to offer curated and powerful learning experiences for our students.

Q – Can you brief us about your programs that will be useful for students to grow better?

A – The careers of the future, that will be in demand, will be the ones involving the application of Artificial Intelligence. This solution is not just limited to the field of computer science and can be applied in other domains as well like transportation, healthcare, space, etc. What is indeed noteworthy is that AI is emerging to be the new English. Application of AI is now across all aspects of life and is stepping up to be an important element across industries! In addition to AI, Design Thinking is another area that will gain traction. It involves empathy and a deep understanding of human beings, problems and concepts. It enables learners to deep dive into the issues, define problems and come up with feasible solutions to resolve the same quickly yet efficiently and effectively. It reinforces problem identification and problem solving amongst learners. Both these learning tools are generic skill sets that cut across all verticals and horizontal and will be the requirement in the times to come! Hence, it would be appropriate for students to opt for programs based on AI and Design Thinking as they will help them grow as better human being and have better career prospects!

Q – According to you, what is the need of the Gurukul System, and why does Indian education need it?

A – The gurukul system prepares you for life while current education prepares you for jobs! Current Indian education system does not take into account the overall development of the students. The system has so far worked with a conventional approach where concepts and subjects are administered to students and they are expected to learn them theoretically (or maximum experiment it in labs). This solely promotes bookish knowledge. However, the gurukul system, on the other hand, goes beyond understanding of the concepts. It fosters applied learning in the real-world and shapes the students holistically to prepare them for the future and makes them ready for life and industry! So, Indian education needs to prepare students for life and not just to secure jobs. Ability to manage life will also enable individuals to have a bright future in terms of job/ career.

Q – How is digital learning transforming today’s education system in India?

A – Learning from anywhere and at all times is the new trend that the pandemic gave birth to. With the amalgamation of technology with education, knowledge learning has been democratised. High-end learning experiences can now be provided while leveraging the power of technology and surpassing all barriers of geography and time zones. Digital learning or experiential learning – it can now be delivered at any place any time.

As a result, we now have access to both synchronous (live online sessions) and asynchronous (pre-recorded content) formats of learning. Each comes with its own differentiating features. However, the combination of both is important and this hybrid learning format enabled with the gurukul pedagogy paves the way for holistic digital learning experiences.

Q – How Corporate Gurukul is using an interactive method to digitally enhance education?

Drones developed by IIT Guwahati to be showcased at Republic Day parade

In a first, drones developed at Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati will be showcased at the Republic Day parade on 26th January.

The drones have been developed by Drones Tech Lab, a startup by the IIT Guwahati and are all set to perform at the Drone show at the Republic day event in Kamrup. The institute said that the drone developed by IIT Guwahati will provide solutions in several domains such as disaster management, agriculture, survey, and mapping.

Elaborating on the projects and drone-based services of IIT Guwahati, Director IIT Guwahati Prof TG Sitharam said, “Since the inauguration of the Drone Centre at IIT Guwahati, there have been several projects where the use of drones is sought for faster data collection, whether it is a land survey, river mapping, agriculture, or healthcare and disaster management. IIT Guwahati will maximize its efforts to provide drone-based services to the state and the region considering the difficult terrain. The present drone show at the R-day event will help in promoting this technology for the benefit of the masses,”.

The Annual Financial Statement rolled back on the amount allotted to Education in the previous year’s Union Budget. A step taken due to the ongoing pandemic, now it needs some revision. During a prolonged staying-in period, work and education went cloud. Interestingly, quality education was still brought to the table through closed doors, while the student was away from the classroom-desk.

Technology as an aid to life has yet again proven its mettle by blurring the lines between urban and rural, tier 1 and tier 2. And it’s time for its inclusion in Knowledge and Education, while the input is recognised even by the Union Budget and lastly, some significant value be attached to it.

While even the economy suffered a slump, education and Healthcare were hit with most effect. “Technology to the rescue”, stands true for both. It is highly imperative that while the latter, though not in quantity but in quality, is fully in tandem with technological inputs, the former be provided a bridge to make up for the loss of the last two years.

Students in the K-12 segment count to 33+ crores, while 60% of them are from government schools. Union Budget 2022 should realize the future of Education in the hands of Technology and empower the Edu-Tech where private ventures need the support. A possible help could be an incentivization scheme with private EdTech players. These, along with countless start-ups from within the country have made hefty use of technology.

A public-private partnership can help explore the potential and scale businesses up to an overwhelming level. The most significant technology lacing up the lives of tier 2 and 3 population, owing to the rapid increase in the usage and dependability of payment apps while physical currency was inaccessible during lockdowns.

 

CBSE Results would soon be on DigiLocker

The Class 10 and Class 12 term 1 board exam results of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will be declared soon. In addition to the official result website, cbseresults.nic.in, the scorecards will also be available on the DigiLocker app and the website, digilocker.gov.in. CBSE students can also download digital copies of their Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets, certificates and migration certificates from DigiLocker.

According to a notification on the digilocker app, CBSE 2022 term 1 results are coming soon. Students can download the app on mobile phones and complete the registration process in advance to get their results.

Officials say that the step has been taken to ensure a smooth process during the day of the results. The official result website of CBSE, cbseresults.nic.in, may face glitches on the result day as lakhs of students will be searching for their results. DigiLocker is an alternative way to download the scorecards.

 

West Bengal to introduce open-air classes to counter Covid

West Bengal education department has decided to launch a novel initiative called ‘Paray Sikshalay’ (neighbourhood school) to bring students back to schools during the pandemic.

Under this initiative, primary and pre-primary students of state-run schools will be given lessons in open spaces. According to an official statement, this new initiative will help get students back to an offline teaching environment and the open air will ensure they stay safe from sitting too close in a class and catching infections.

Not only this, students will also be motivated to participate in extracurricular activities such as elocution and painting, which will also take place in open air.

“The last two years of the pandemic have been full of ups and downs for many industries worldwide and needless to say, the education industry isn’t spared either. While Edtech has seen a significant boom, there are factors that still need to be reconsidered by the Government of India in the upcoming Union Budget that can help boost the edtech industry which is the future of education.

According to us, one of the key areas of concern for all edtech companies is the disparity in the GST treatment of print educational solutions vs digital educational solutions. For example, a textbook is charged 5% GST whereas the same book in an online format is charged 18% GST. We’ve seen the potential of online educational material increasing access to education and the quality of education. We are expecting this GST should be reduced so that more people can invest in digital education. We hope that the Government of India reconsiders this in the upcoming budget announcement and builds a fair and equivalent system for offline as well as online education providers.

“We are looking forward to Finance Minister to include relief steps for parents and schools, who have been deeply impacted by the pandemic. As the education sector is one of the highly impacted segments during the pandemic, we expect due consideration on operational expenses for pre-schools and schools to be able to reopen and resume operations with appropriate safety measures including access to affordable credit & financing solutions. An increased allocation for the education sector will help negate the learning gaps children have endured due to the closure of schools for more than 18-20 months.

A reduction in the 18% GST levied especially on rented premises used for Pre-Schools & Schools would provide relief for the segment. More importantly, the government should also consider allocation in the Union Budget for developing the digital delivery and new age skill competencies for all the teachers. Digital infrastructure is a key component for the growth of all sectors and industries, and we seek the Finance Minister’s intervention to boost the investment into this, to help boost connectivity and usage across the country.”
