Delhi govt school students get lesson in social entrepreneurship

Delhi govt school students

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and social entrepreneur Anshu Gupta interacted with Delhi government school students of classes 9 to 12 under the Entrepreneurship Mindset Curriculum programme.

Gupta, an entrepreneur and recipient of the 2015 Ramon Magsaysay award, founded the NGO ‘Goonj’ in 1999 that works in the field of humanitarian relief, aid and development to support vulnerable and underprivileged people.

“You won’t be able to work, or go to vulnerable and disaster-struck areas if fear paralyses you. Take all the precautions but don’t let the fear overwhelm you,” Gupta said during the online interaction when a student asked him if the disaster relief campaigns undertaken by Goonj were scary. Another student asked Gupta about his work on spreading awareness about menstruation in small villages, and how such taboo subjects can be addressed. “Misconception on women’s issues isn’t just limited to villages but is prevalent amongst educated people too. It is with the right intent, and honesty that one can gain the trust of the people. You gain their trust first to get the message across,” Gupta said.

Sisodia said his government has designed the entrepreneurship curriculum to connect students with entrepreneurs who can guide them by sharing their stories.

“If you’ve seen the movie 3 Idiots, there were two types of characters – Rancho and Chatur – both successful in their own way,” Sisodia, who is also the education minister, told students.

Sisodia: Delhi Schools to remain closed for now

Manish_Sisodia

All schools in Delhi will continue to be closed till further orders in view of the COVID-19 situation, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

Parents are not in favour of reopening schools either, Sisodia said at an online press conference. The Delhi government had earlier announced that schools will remain closed till October 31. “We keep getting feedback from parents that they are really concerned about whether it is safe to reopen schools. It is not. Wherever schools have reopened, COVID-19 cases among children have risen. So we have decided that as of now schools in the national capital will not reopen. They will continue to be closed till further orders,” Sisodia said.

Universities and schools across the country have been closed since March 16, when the Centre announced a countrywide classroom shutdown as part of measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. A nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 25. While several restrictions have been eased in different ‘unlock’ phases, educational institutions continue to remain closed.

According to ‘Unlock 5’ guidelines, states can take a call on reopening schools in phases. Several states have also begun the process of reopening schools. Earlier, schools were allowed to call students from Class 9 to 12 to school on voluntary basis from September 21. However, the Delhi government decided against it.

Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi suspended

Delhi University

On the orders of President Ram Nath Kovind, Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi was suspended. According to officials of the Ministry of Education (MoE), has also directed an inquiry against him over allegations of dereliction of duty.

The move comes amid a power tussle in the central university.

The President, who is the Visitor to the university, has placed Tyagi under suspension to ensure that the inquiry is fair and that he is not able to tamper with material records or coerce the witnesses, a senior ministry official said.

“All orders issued by or issued with the approval of Yogesh Tyagi during the period of his absence on medical ground are set aside and to be treated as null and void,” the official said.

Tyagi has been on leave since July 2 when he was admitted to AIIMS under emergency medical condition. The government had on July 17 given Pro-VC P C Joshi the charge of VC, until Tyagi resumes office.

A controversy erupted last week when Tyagi removed Joshi as pro-VC on Thursday and appointed Geeta Bhatt, the director of the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board of the university, in his place.

The ministry then intervened in the power tussle between the vice chancellor and the pro-vice chancellor, saying appointments made by Tyagi were not valid as he is on leave.

Delhi HC rejects plea for JEE Advanced re-exam for left out candidates

Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court has refused to interfere with the authorities’ decision not to hold re-examination of JEE (Advanced) for the candidates who could not attempt the entrance test due to their COVID-19 positive status.

Justice Jayant Nath said it is a settled legal position that normally, it would be wise and safe for the courts to leave the decisions of academic matters to experts who are more familiar with the problems they face than the courts generally. The high court dismissed a petition by an IIT aspirant, who had obtained a rank in the top 96,187 general category candidates in the JEE (Mains) examination held in September this year but could not sit for the JEE (Advanced) examination on September 27 as he tested COVID-19 positive on September 22.

The results were declared on October 5. He said he wrote to the Organising Chairman of IIT-Delhi, explaining his position and seeking accommodation/relaxation to another date for taking this examination. He also contacted the examination centre in Jaipur where he was informed that there were no arrangements for a COVID-19 positive student to appear in the examination.

The plea said the eligibility criteria for JEE (Advanced) is that a candidate can appear only two times in two consecutive years. Hence, he will lose a chance of getting admission into prestigious institutions like IITs. He pleaded that separate arrangements in the form of isolation centres for candidates who tested positive for COVID-19 should have been made and implemented at centres, as it was done in other examinations like CLAT 2020.
