Sisodia lauds school as 5 students crack IIT, 22 qualify NEET

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia visited the Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidhyalaya in Paschim Vihar in west Delhi and congratulated the teachers and principal for their 27 students clearing JEE and NEET.

While five students from the school have got admission in Indian Institutes of Technology this year after securing high rank in the Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced, 22 students have cleared the medical entrance exam National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).

“The best practices from this school should be adopted by other schools so that we can repeat and multiply this success. Every child of Delhi should get such exciting and valuable opportunities to enhance their talent and make the country proud. By learning from your best practices and approaches, we want to create more opportunities for children in all schools for a brighter future,” Sisodia said.

He said that the 98 per cent result in the board class 12 results, and the scale of success in JEE and NEET shows that our dream is coming true.

“It also shows that the quality of government schools in Delhi has become very high. We have to learn from these successes to make Delhi’s education revolution so effective that it will not only inspire our country but the whole world,” he added.

According to government officials, during the interaction with the deputy chief minister, the schoolteachers said that it was their conscious effort to change the perception among children that to succeed in JEE and NEET, one needs to enroll in expensive coaching.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the Unlock 5.0 Guidelines which allowed for partial reopening of schools in graded manner until 30th November 2020. In line with the earlier guidelines, state governments have been empowered to decide on reopening of schools in line with the guidelines released on 30th Sept, as not major changes have been made to the guidelines.

As per the Unlock 5.0 Guidelines released by the Central Government in Sept, all schools were given in-principal permission to reopen, with due permission from their respective state governments. The MHA order on Unlock Guidelines asked state government to assess the local prevailing situation and decide on reopening of schools in accordance with that. State Governments have to take the decision to reopen schools and educational institutions in their states based on the assessment of the situation and subject to SOPs.

Following this, many state governments has decided to reopen schools in their states partially or fully and many others including Uttarakhand and Rajasthan are still in the process to implement it. Educational Institutions that have been allowed to reopen in the state include schools and coaching institutes and state and private universities for research scholars allowing gatherings above the limit of 100.

In a major development, the online registration process for medical, dental counselling based on National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) has been postponed. As per the official notice, the delay has been caused “due to some technical reasons”.

The registration for counselling which was to begin on October 27 will now begin on October 28. Candidates will have to apply at mcc.nic.in.

Seats to medical, dental and allied fields will be granted after counselling. This year, admission to JIPMER and AIIMS will also be given based on NEET counselling. Earlier, the entrance gateway for the institutes was based on separate entrance exams. MCC conducts the central counselling for 15 per cent seats to MBBC, BDS colleges across India while state-wise counselling sessions are held for remaining seats.

This year, spouses and children of terror attack victims will also get reservation in MBBS and BDS admissions. The reserved seats will be from the central pool of seats for medical admissions.

It has been decided by MCC that the earlier eligibility criteria of 15 per cent AIQ wherein total candidates called for counselling were five times the number of seats available for allotment were (as being done previously) has been abolished. All candidates will be eligible till exhaustion of seats.

After registering themselves, students will be allowed to select their course and college of choice under choice filing. Seats will be alloted based on both merit and choice.

According to officials, the schools in Rajasthan may reopen from November 2, 2020 onwards. All educational institutes had been closed for the past seven months due to the outbreak of the pandemic. As many states across the country have already started classes the wait for Rajasthan may finally be over from November 2, for Classes 10th, 11th, and 12th.

Earlier, the State Education Department informed that it had sent a ready proposal to the state government to re-open schools for the senior classes from November 2 onwards. The senior classes will be opening in the first phase.

The proposal is still awaiting a response from the government as per the state education minister Govind Singh Dotasara. “A detailed SOP has been drafted in this context and sent to the state government as well. Our worry is to ensure that the schools are being run for 150 days at least which is the minimum requirement for operating one academic school session,” he said. The minister also added that zero academic sessions were nowhere on the Government’s minds.

The state government has prepared a few guidelines for teachers and students which inform about proper ways of sanitisation of school furniture, stationery, toilets, water tanks and other things. It also clarifies on the arrangements for washing hands, using own pens, books, and notebooks, eating home-cooked meals, drinking water in their own bottles etc.

As per most recent updates, Uttarakhand would also be reopening the schools in the state from November 2. The schools, however, would reopen only for students of classes 10 and 12 from the given date. Also, parental consent is mandatory for attendance.

CBSE releases exam forms for 10th, 12th private students

After much delay, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has released the application forms for the 10th, 12th private candidates on the official website for CBSE Board 2021. Those who wish to apply can visit the official website cbse.nic.in.

For Compartment Category is applicable for class 12th candidates. Candidate needs to give previous main examination details for applying. Candidates wishing to appear for all subjects should apply under Failure category.

Candidates placed in compartment category in the previous main examination can also apply in this category, however, in that case, they have to appear in all selected subjects and will be treated as full subject failures.

For improvement, candidates who passed the main examination held in March and want to improve their performance.

India ranks 6th in valuing its teachers among 135 countries

The Implicit Teacher Status analysis, 6th finds India ranks when it comes to people’s implicit, unconscious and automatic views on the status of teachers in the country. India is behind China, Ghana, Singapore, Canada and Malaysia by respondents’ automatic impressions of teachers.

Since the coronavirus pandemic first emerged, over 1.5 billion learners across the world impacted by school and university closures.

The report, which builds on the data gathered by the Global Teacher Status Index (GTSI) 2018 a 35-country survey conducted from 1,000 representative respondents in each of the countries confirms the link between teacher status and pupil attainment.

The new report seeks to explain for the first time why Implicit Teacher Status varies between countries.

It finds that teachers generally enjoy higher status in richer countries, and in countries which allow a greater fraction of public funds to education.

India’s expenditure on education as a percentage of government spending is 14 per cent. In Italy, which ranks 24th for Implicit Teacher Status, by comparison, it is only 8.1 per cent, whereas in Ghana, which ranks second, it is 22.1 per cent.

The report coincides with the announcement of the finalists for the 2020 Global Teacher Prize, which includes Ranjitsinh Disale a teacher from a village in Maharashtra who is in the running for the USD 1-million annual prize, to be unveiled later this year.

Pokhriyal: Progress of IoEs to be mapped with international standards indicators

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal said “the progress of Institutions of Eminence (IoE) will be mapped with indicators of renowned international rankings QS and Times Higher Education, and an incentive mechanism will be developed for those institutes which are performing well.”

Taking the social media, the minister said, “Various topics were discussed during the meeting like: What measures can be taken to accelerate the recruitment of #international faculty. The progress of IoEs shall be mapped with the indicators of THE/QS World University Rankings and international standards.”

“An incentive mechanism for institutions shall be developed to reward the IoEs that are doing well. An integrated portal containing world-class #research papers from all HEIs shall be made,” he further said.

The minister said that numerous measures shall be taken to engineer a better perception of IoEs. “Officials were directed to develop a detailed strategy (with both qualitative and quantitative parameters) for brand building of the institutes. NEP recommendations such as Multiple Entry-Exit, Online Degrees, Multidisciplinary, Internationalization etc. shall be leveraged to ensure the success of IoEs,” he said.

He made the comments at a review meeting of the IOEs chaired by him along with Minister of State for Education Sanjay Dhotre.

The Education Ministry had launched the IoE scheme in 2018 as per which 20 institutions were to be selected — 10 public and 10 private — that will enjoy complete academic and administrative autonomy.

Karnataka to reopen colleges from Nov 17

The Karnataka government announced that colleges in the state can reopen from November 17. However, students can opt to attend classes in campus or online, the government has said.

Higher Education Minister C N Ashwathnarayan said the decision on reopening colleges was taken at a review meeting headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.

Online classes in the state’s colleges started in September and a few degree exams were also conducted.

“Colleges in Karnataka will reopen for classes from November 17. Reopening of all graduate, PG, diploma and engineering colleges was discussed with all concerned department officials (at the review meet),” said Ashwathnarayan, who is also the deputy Chief Minister.

“Classes will be held in a ‘blended’ manner, with students having the option of attending classes either in-person or through online classes. Those who wish to attend the classes in-person, will have to carry a consent letter from their parents,” the minister said.

“All safety measures shall be followed in accordance with the UGC’s Covid-19 guidelines. A task force will be instituted at each district and college level to seamlessly implement the same,” he added.

The Karnataka government has been considering reopening colleges, which shut in March on account of the pandemic, from some months now.

In the normal course, colleges used to reopen between June and August for new academic terms.

Students have demanded that hostels should be reopened along with colleges since out station students would be hard-pressed to find places to stay.

HC stays Delhi Govt decision to pay staff salaries from students’ fund

The Delhi High Court stayed the decision of the AAP government asking 12 Delhi University colleges, fully funded by it, to pay outstanding salaries to staffers from the Students Society Fund.

Justice Navin Chawla passed the order on a plea by Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) which said the students’ fund cannot be used for any other activity other than for students’ welfare.

DUSU’s counsel said the fund cannot be used for paying teachers’ salaries.

The students’ petition was also supported by the advocate Aakanksha Kaul, representing the Delhi University.

DUSU has challenged the October 16 order of Delhi government asking the 12 colleges to pay the salaries of over 1500 staff– both teaching and non-teaching– from the students fund and the amount should be released within two weeks.

The college staff are not paid for the last three months.

The 12 colleges which are affiliated with the Delhi University and are fully funded by the Delhi government are Acharya Narendra Dev College, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar College, Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences, Bhagini Nivedita College, DeenDayal Upadhyaya College, Aditi Mahavidyalaya Women’s College, Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences, Keshav Mahavidyalaya, Maharaja Agrasen College (DU), Maharshi Valmiki College of Education, Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women and Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies.

The high court issued notice to the Directorate of Higher Education, Delhi University and Delhi government and sought their replies on the petition by DUSU.

IIT Jodhpur inks pact with NHAI to share expertise

In a major development, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Jodhpur and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) have signed a pact to share their expertise for betterment of highway infrastructure.

The signing ceremony was held at the IIT campus in the presence of Institute’s Director Santanu Chaudhury and Ajay Bishnoi, GM (Tech) and Project Director, NHAI, Project Implementation Unit (PIU) Jodhpur.

“As a part of this MoU, NHAI and IIT Jodhpur will work together in various domains, including transportation engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics engineering, infrastructure systems, earthquake engineering, urban and rural planning and disaster mitigation and management with an objective of sharing,” said Chaudhury.

The MoU will also facilitate undergraduate and postgraduate students of IIT Jodhpur to undertake fully paid internships in above domains. The joint activities will facilitate in bridging the industry-institution gap and develop technologies that could be adopted in practice by NHAI.
