UP govt to conduct final year exams under UGC guidelines

In the light of Coronavirus pandemic, the Uttar Pradesh Government will be conducting the final year in all the state universities. The state universities are expected to follow the UGC and the HRD Ministry guidelines released for the universities across the country.

The UP government has decided to cancel the intermediate (first and second year) examinations instead due to the pandemic.

Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said that all the UG and PG examinations except the final year examinations have been cancelled. Sharma further added that the students from other classes will be promoted based on the internal assessment marks. He also added that the final year exams in the state universities will be completed by September 30, 2020.

Sharma further added that in case any student cannot appear for the final exams a second chance will be given and as per the convenience of the universities another exam will be conducted for such students. The Undergraduate and Postgraduate results will be declared by October 15 to 31, 2020.

The UGC has earlier released the revised guidelines on July 6, 2020, for the universities to conduct the examinations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The UGC has made the final year examinations mandatory for the students in all the universities.

The guidelines were however opposed by the teachers association, student bodies, and the states including Punjab, Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, and Rajasthan.

SC asks NIOS to declare Class 10 and 12 Results 2020 by August 7

In a major move, Supreme Court has directed National Institute of Open ensure (NIOS) to declare Class 10th and 12th Results 2020 by 7th August 2020. The direction came after NIOS issued a notification confirming cancellation of NIOS Board Exams 2020 for both 10th and 12th Class students, after multiple postponements due to COVID-19.

The judgement was delivered by Justice A M Khanwilkar who was hearing the matter filed by two petitioners with regards to NIOS Board’s decision to hold the 10th and 12th Class Board Exams.

Earlier, NIOS had planned to hold the NIOS 10th and 12th Class Exams 2020 from 17th July 2020 onwards; however, this decision was retracted later. Prior to the hearing, on July 10, the NIOS Board issued a formal notification confirming cancellation of NIOS 10th and 12th Class Exams 2020 which were pending and postponed owing to the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

The bench noted that “Considering the fact that…NIOS has already issued a notification on July 10, 2020, after the institution of these petition(s), nothing survives for consideration in the present writ petition(s) except to observe that…NIOS must ensure that the result for the current academic year is declared not later than August 7, 2020.” The bench further clarified that.

Vedantu raises $100 M from Coatue

In a major development, Live tutoring startup Vedantu has raised $100 million from US-based hedge fund Coatue. The valuation has risen in just a couple of months to $600 million.

The lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has boosted online education as students have been unable to step outside.

Founded by Vamsi Krishna, Pulkit Jain, Anand Prakash and Saurabh Saxena in 2011, Vedantu currently provides live coaching classes for K12 students, including for entrance exams such as IIT JEE Main and Advanced for engineering and NEET for medical colleges.

It also provides classes for CBSE and ICSE, as well as various state boards, along with sample question papers, revision notes, mock tests and previous year’s papers.

Vedantu said it has grown 220 percent during the lockdown with over two million students attending live classes and teachers delivering over eight million hours of live classes.

Vedantu has raised over $200 million in funding, most of it in the last 12 months, from investors such as Tiger Global Management, Westbridge Capital, Accel and GGV Capital.

HRD Minister launches online training programme for teachers

Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister, Ramesh Pokhriya Nishank today virtually launched the online version of ‘NISHTHA’. It is a new programme will provide training to 1,200 key resources persons (KRPs) of Andhra Pradesh.

Around 23,000 teachers KRPs identified by state governments and 17.5 lakh teachers and school heads have been trained under the National Initiative for School Heads’ and Teachers Holistic Advancement, or NISHTHA, programme. HRD minister said that for training the remaining 24 lakh teachers and school heads, NISHTHA has been customized for the online mode to improve the learning outcomes.

The minister also said that due to COVID-19 pandemic situation and the lockdown have affected the conduct of this programme in face-to-face mode. As per a MHRD statement, NISHTHA in online mode will be conducted through DIKSHA and NISHTHA portals by the National Council for Educational Research and Training, or NCERT.

Andhra Pradesh is the first state for which MHRD is launching online NISHTHA programme. Pokhriyal said: “These resource persons will help in the mentoring of teachers of Andhra Pradesh, who will take on-line NISHTHA training on DIKSHA later on.”NISHTHA focuses on the holistic development of children and hence includes curriculum and inclusive education health and well-being, personal social qualities, art integrated learning, initiatives in school education, subject-specific pedagogies, ICT in teaching-learning, leadership, pre-school education, pre-vocational education and other aspect of education.

We are also conducting online classes successfully. Not only in urban areas, students in rural areas are also attending online classes in large numbers says Dr SP Singh, Founder Manager of Lucknow Public Schools & Colleges in an interview with Arpit Gupta of Elets News Network (ENN).

How Lucknow Public School (LPS) executed the online classes and tackled the Corona pandemic?

Online classes cannot replace the physical ones by any means. But due to the Corona pandemic, all the schools across the globe are compelled to adopt online classes. We are also conducting online classes successfully. Our highly skilled faculties are teaching online classes with their utmost zeal. Not only in urban areas, but students in rural areas are also attending online classes in large numbers. There has been a change in the mindset within students and parents; they have accepted online classes gracefully. Recently, we have also conducted monthly tests online successfully.

We are also recording the online classes and sending them to the students on WhatsApp, so that they can access it anytime.

What are the digital tools LPS is using for students?

We are using WhatsApp, Google Meet and Snap Homework App to conduct online classes. The usages of applications are very successful. Our teachers’ are fairly tech-savvy.

What are the challenges students, parents and teachers faced during the online classes?

Usually, some parents face the stigma of being tech-savvy for online classes but these days’ children are very smart and quick to adopt the technology. Our students are tech-savvy and they know the usage of applications. We are even inviting parents to monitor online classes.

LPS has decided to reduce the annual fees in view of COVID. Please elaborate.

We have been giving concessions to parents if more than one child studies in our school. This year, we have surged the concession percentage due to lockdown. Until lockdown, the school will not ask for any convenience fees. We have also reduced fees in other heads, which can provide relief to parents.

In this pandemic all the sports and extra-curricular activities have halted? How is LPS thinking to revive it within the students?

To provide much-needed relief to students from studies, we have conducted an online summer camp. We have also conducted many activities including poem writing, drawing, music, dance, art, craft and many others. We have asked students to participate in these online camps.

We request all the parents and students to stay home during this pandemic. Students must attend online classes. In the coming days, things will change and everything will become normal.

What are your initiatives in Higher Education at Lucknow Public Schools & Colleges?

We offer various courses including BBA, BCA, B.Com, B.Com (Hons), B.Sc. and BJMC in our Lucknow Public College of Professional Studies. In this pandemic, we have not increased the course fees. We are conducting online classes for them and the students are accepting gracefully. The online classes were conducted seamlessly in the last two months.

What are your initiatives in CSR activities during the COVID pandemic?

We have donated Rs. 21 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. In many districts, we have started community kitchens and provided sanitizers and soaps to many poor people. To boost the immunity of people, we distributed homeopathic medicines, which helped thousands of people in this pandemic.

UGC received Universities status over holding exams

In a major move, the University Grants Commission (UGC) today announced that it has received responses from 640 universities on the issue of holding exams amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The UGC said “Universities were approached to inform the status of the conduct of examination. Response received from 640 universities. Out of these, 454 have either conducted the examination or are planning to conduct. 177 universities are yet to decide on the conduct of examination.”

In case of 27 private universities, which were established during 2019-20 to till date, the first batch is yet to become eligible for final examination, it said.

On July 6, the UGC had issued revised exam guidelines mandating to hold final examinations in colleges and universities by the end of September stating that the academic credibility, career opportunities and future progress of students were linked to exams.

Earlier in the week, the Delhi High Court asked the Centre, UGC and Delhi University to reply to a plea challenging the guidelines making it mandatory for colleges to conduct final year examinations by September-end in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

DU to conduct final year UG and PG exams from August 10

Squashing all the rumours, the Delhi University said it will conduct the online open book examinations for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students from August 10 to August 31. However, DU said, students unable to appear in the exams in August will get another chance.

The varsity had informed the Delhi High Court last week that it has decided to postpone the Open Book Examinations (OBE), scheduled from July 10, for final year undergraduate courses to next month.

In a notification issued, DU said it will conduct the examinations for the final semester/term/year students of all undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including in School of Open Learning and Non Collegiate Women’s Education Board, from August 10 onwards in the OBE mode remotely.

The final datesheets for undergraduate and postgraduate courses will be available on the official website of the university by July 16 and July 22, respectively. “For those students who for any reason are not able to appear in the examinations in OBE mode remotely, the university has decided to conduct an additional phase of examinations in OBE mode through online/offline/blended mechanism,” the notification said.

The examinations will be conducted after about two weeks from the date of conclusion of the OBE mode tests. The students under the PWD category, including the visually impaired students who have appeared for the OBE remotely, and who wish to improve their grades will be given an opportunity in these examinations.

Maharashtra Board declares MSBSHSE result 2020

The Maharashtra Board has declared Class 12 Results 2020. Students can check their MSBSHSE result 2020 by visiting mahresults.nic.in. The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will be made available on the MSBSHSE 12th result 2020 on the official website.

The Maharashtra HSC exam 2020 was conducted from 18th February to 17th March 2020. Maharashtra HSC Result 2020 declaration has been delayed due to the pandemic. MSBSHSE had completed the exams on time, however, the Maha 12th results were delayed as the evaluation work was halted as the Board had taken precautions to keep students and teachers safe.

With over 14 lakh students eager to check their Class 12 Results for Maharashtra Board, the official websites of the board may suffer from technical problems or glitches after declaration.

Haryana to open 1,000 play schools across the state

To provide quality education and learning among children aged between three to six years, the Haryana government is all set to open 1,000 playway schools across the state.

The announcement to open these schools was made in this year’s Budget and a formal decision was taken at a meeting presided over by chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

Directing officers to upgrade Anganwadi centres which are currently running inside the premises of primary schools into smart learning playways, the chief minister said the curriculum of these schools should be designed in the form of animations and audio-visuals to help children enhance their cognitive learning.

The CM said the findings of the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2019 titled ‘Early Years’ has highlighted the fact that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life are key dimensions of schooling and learning. He said understanding the need to strongly encourage play-based activities that develop cognitive abilities in preschool years, 1,000 smart playways will be opened.

Tamil Nadu announces TN Plus Two Result 2020; check details

Following suit of other boards, the Directorate of Government Examinations, Tamil Nadu has announced the TN Plus Two Result 2020. Students can visit the official website to check the results- tnresults.nic.in.

While downloading the TN Class 12 results 2020 candidates must make sure to cross-check the subjects names and marks provided on the mark sheet.

The original copy of the TN class 12 Board Result will be provided by the board via the respective schools.

Over 9 lakh students had appeared for the exams. Students from all the streams, viz. Arts, Science and Commerce can check their TN Plus Two results 2020. The TN Board Class 12 exams were conducted from 2nd March to 23rd March 2020. And, the exams which were canceled earlier were conducted later in July.
