MBZUAI: World’s First Graduate Level, Research-Based AI University

MBZUAI: World’s First Graduate Level, Research-Based AI University

MBZUAI is the first graduate level, research-based AI University in the world. It will train Master’s and Ph.D. students in AI with a particular focus on machine learning and computer vision specializations. The University will also conduct research addressing AI applications specific to UAE and further afield, as well as contributing to the open scientific literature, informs Prof Anil K. Jain, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Michigan State University in a conversation with Elets News Network (ENN).

Tell us in detail about the launch of world’s first graduate-level research-based AI University in UAE.

Oil rich countries such as UAE are interested in diversifying their economies by investing in emerging technologies. One such technology is Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is comprised of software and/or machines that can automatically decide to take actions or perform decision-making tasks considered intelligent by humans. AI systems typically take as input a large collection of diverse data (e.g., text, voice, images, videos or other sensory data) and take actions or make inferences. AI is attractive because it has found success in many critical applications such as surveillance, economic forecasting, healthcare and education, among others.

MBZUAI is the first graduate level, research-based AI University in the world. It will train Master’s and Ph.D. students in AI with a particular focus on machine learning and computer vision specializations. Additional specializations will be added later. The University will also conduct research addressing AI applications specific to UAE and further afield, as well as contributing to the open scientific literature.

What is the roadmap to achieve the University’s goal of empowering students, businesses, and governments to advance artificial intelligence as a global force for positive progress?

The success of any university depends on its students and faculty. Since the formal announcement of the University on October 16, 2019, vigorous efforts are being made to recruit talented students and faculty to join MBZUAI. Similarly, efforts are underway to contact various industrial partners and government agencies, both in UAE and around the world, to recruit the graduates of MBZUAI.

What programs do you plan to undertake at the University to ensure teaching faculty is abreast with the latest technology?

This is a very important issue. The field of Artificial Intelligence and its subareas, namely machine learning, robotics, computer vision, natural language understanding, and human-computer interaction are progressing at a fast pace. Plans are underway to build partnerships with universities in the United States and Europe that are very well positioned in AI, where MBZUAI faculty can visit for training and research collaboration.

What is the differentiating factor that makes this University stand apart from other academic institutions?

First, this will only be a graduate level university, to enroll students who are interested in pursuing Master’s and doctorate programs entirely centered around AI. Secondly, all the graduate students at MBZUAI will be fully supported with a full scholarship, plus benefits such as a monthly allowance, health insurance, and accommodation. The University will work with leading local and global companies to secure internships, and will also assist students in finding employment opportunities.

Please tell us about the vision of the global AI community.

The vision is to provide health care, nutrition, education, economic well-being, dignity, security and empowerment to all the humans living on this planet irrespective of their religion, race, color and country of origin.

Maths made easy with SolveitNOW

SolveitNOW

“Maths stinks”

Heard this lately? If you have kids, you’ve probably heard that phrase — or maybe you’ve even uttered some variant of it yourself. Hard maths and maths related physics problems have bogged down students and educators since forever. Due to inadequacy of school education systems to cater to resolve doubts to solve difficult problems, coaching classes and private tutoring market has emerged. And it’s really big! Global private tutoring market is projected to surpass $272 billion by 2022. However, an impeded learning process with no suitable help is demotivating for students. Multiple lackluster attempts to help students using technology have failed to create an impact; mostly because these tools do not help in developing a real insight in problem solution, from a student’s perspective. Getting STUCK is like a hump on the road and at times a wall too! It even undermines the student’s self-confidence & motivation until he solves that problem.

A new startup, SolveitNOW is all set to revolutionize this paradigm by providing a brain science + AI based application that will help students connect horizontally across classes/ colleges and even countries to learn and master the art of getting “unstuck” while facing a challenging problem. We all have experienced the ‘joy of solving’ – the exhilaration & the morale-boosting moment when the solution to the complex problem we have been struggling with, unfolds itself, layer by layer.

What’s New?

SolveitNOW has been developed after years of brain science research and real-life simulations wherein, students who were stuck on a tough problem found a path to getting elegant and insightful solutions using smart hints provided by experts. SolveitNOW’s founder Mr.Shekhar stressed that “It’s built for solvers, so that participants engage in Asynchronous conversations that help them gather thoughts and present (their) best selves with ZERO stress”.

It is a Phone-based APP that the participants download on their smartphones & use to ask or solve complex problems. The application is built with a core focus on elegance, not only does it provide a “solution” to the problem but it also trains students in how-to-solve-it, intuitively. In fact, it is the students who train each other via meaningful arguments & discussions over study doubts. Very few problems are solved by designated “experts”.

How’s it different?

  • While most ventures in this domain are focussed on tutoring, SolveitNOW is focussed on giving students Guided Insight Discovery. There are no video lectures, no question banks and no designated chat boxes. The application simply translates the real life experience of friends helping out each other in solving complex doubts. That means teaching students “to embrace a challenge”.
  • The application works on peer to peer technology. All that the students have to do is to click a photo of their doubt, send it to their friends for discussion and mention their “point- of-confusion”. “You see the effort as a path to improving, and you learn from feedback.” Only a handful of problems that remain unsolved in the network for long, are answered by experts.
  • The entire process is asynchronous – each participant tackles the problem at his own convenient time and there are no rigid timelines. Solvers get enough time to ponder upon complex doubts which remain largely unsolved on most other platforms.
  • SolveitNOW is built for doers and is super easy to use. More importantly, it enables FREE communication with peers and near-free access to Global Network of Solvers.

What’s the initial target market?

We believe: “Developing good maths skills is essential to success in life.” Hence we focus on bright high-school and college level students. These students are literate on social media and will be quick to adopt. In this competitive environment, each little edge over others is very important for career progress & job satisfaction. – the bright kids would find this platform very helpful/satisfying.

What’s the competitive landscape?

This is a huge Global-scale market well recognised by several venture funded companies, offering online services to help students in their study needs.

We’re uniquely positioned as a Social Problem-solving app, and students will find our app complimentary. We’ll pursue this opportunity aggressively by engaging schools and on-boarding student communities on SolveitNOW.

The journey so far

Since the rollout of its Android application on the PlayStore in 2018, SolveitNOW has grown into a 13K strong community of solvers and satisfied students who engage in study discussions on the application on a near daily basis. The best part about this growth story is the fact that it has been completely organic – thereby proving its basic strength & authenticity.

What lies ahead?

Team SolveitNOW stands firmly committed to its mission of helping more and more students get “unstuck”. Gone are the days of old-school tutoring; Go SolveitNOW to experience the magic yourself at SolveitNOW.app

National Education Day 2019: Remembering India’s First Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad

National Education Day 2019

The nation celebrates National Education Day on November 11, every year which is also the birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister of Independent India, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.

In an effort to honour Maulana Abul Kalam Azad on his contribution to education, The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) on September 11, 2018, announced that his birth anniversary will be celebrated as National Education Day, every year. Subsequently, from November 11, 2008 onwards, this day is annually celebrated as National Education Day.

On this day, the Ministry of Human Resource Development tweeted by saying,

Schools and colleges in India mark this day by organising seminars, symposia, competitions etc, related to varied aspects of education.

Maulana Sayyid Abul Kalam Ghulam Muhiyuddin Ahmed bin Khairuddin Al-Hussaini Azad was an Indian scholar and independence activist. He was one of the most important national leaders of the Indian National Congress (INC) during independence.

National Education Day: Teachers should be respected and paid their dues, says W Bengal Governor

On the eve of the birthday of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the governor of West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankhar said that teachers should be treated with respect and paid their dues.

In the official statement, Dhankar said, “It is a sad spectacle to see that these days teachers have to take to agitations to get their due.”

“Such a worrisome scenario has a detrimental impact on education that is vital for nation-building,” he added.

The Governor said this while recognizing the contributions of Abul Kalam Azad in establishing the educational foundation of the country.

Abul Kalam Azad was Independent India’s first education minister. His birthday on November 11 is celebrated as ‘National Education Day’.

Notably, the governor’s statement came a day after he met a delegation of the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA). They discussed the implementation of the revised UGC pay scale for the faculty among other issues.

For the uninitiated, the JUTA members have been agitating for the revised UGC pay scale.

On Saturday, JUTA General Secretary Partha Pratim Roy had claimed that Dhankhar informed the delegation that it was “totally unjustified” to implement the new pay scale from January 1, 2020, instead of the scheduled date of January 1, 2016.
