About 60 per cent parents satisfied with Delhi’s government schools: ASSOCHAM Survey

Around 60 per cent of parents are satisfied with their decision to send their wards to government schools of Delhi, a survey revealed.

“The purpose of the survey is to better understand the experiences of parents and examine the reasons behind their schooling decisions,” said Associated Chambers of Commerce of India (ASSOCHAM) secretary general D S Rawat .

During the survey, the parents also said that there is a scope of major improvements in security measures and infrastructure of these schools through sufficient investment.

ASSOCHAM conducted the survey under its initiative for corporate social responsibility. The survey also revealed, “About 60 per cent of parents were satisfied with the decision to send their wards to Delhi government schools.”

During the survey, around 5,000 parents were questioned on their satisfaction levels with the government schools. During the survey, most of the parents appreciated the importance given to holistic development and improving education standards at the national capital’s government schools but were at the same time concerned about rising fees and the focus on extracurricular activities.

“Overall, about 30 per cent said that there is significant scope for perking up the security apparatus and infrastructure in Delhi government schools,” the survey said. Around 70 per cent parents preferred government schools due to better learning environment for children, better student-teacher ratio, small class size, responsive teachers and administrators, frequent parent-teacher interactions and better discipline, said the survey.

MHRD declares HP and J&K as most proactive states in adopting its educational initiatives

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has declared Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir as the most proactive states in north India for adopting its education initiatives.

“The MHRD has declared Jammu and Kashmir as the second most proactive state after Himachal Pradesh in adopting new initiatives in education,” said Jammu and Kashmir education minister Altaf Bukhari.

According to Bukhari, the performance of Jammu and Kashmir has been highly appreciated for implementing the new initiatives related to education sector actively. The State Government is committed to expand the reach of quality education in every part of the state under the leadership of Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, added Bukhari.

The minister has also appreciated the private sector’s contribution to take ahead the government’s agenda of making quality education available and affordable for the students.

Meanwhile, representatives of different states participated in recently held review meeting to provide the details about their respective State’s progress in school education related activities, an official spokesman said. The meeting was chaired by Union Secretary, MHRD, Anil Swarup who appreciated the states for their progress made in different schemes and stressed on expediting their effective implementation.

Swarup also reviewed the implementation of centrally-sponsored schemes and asked the representatives of states to gear up for achieving the objectives of schemes. The meeting also discussed the roadmap to achieve goals in infrastructure building, training, DIETs and up-gradation of school education.

Swarup expressed keen interest in upgrading the infrastructure of school education in J&K and hoped that it is one of the priority sectors of the state, the spokesman said. “Idea to meet here is that states with similar or difficult things do and learn from each other,” Swarup said.

Get set ready for Gujarat student startup and innovation summit on Oct 5

Ahmedabad is all set to host National Student Startup and Innovation Summit on Thursday which will be inaugurated by Guajarat’s  Minister for Higher and Technical Education Bhupendrasinh Chudasama.

The summit will witness a keynote addresses from Anju Sharma, Principal Secretary, Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Gujarat and also from Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, All India Council of Technical Education. The conference is aimed at giving a  boost to entrepreneurial skills of students. Higher and Technical Education Department, Government of Gujarat, in association with Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd, Asia and Middle East’s premier media and technology research organisation will organise the summit. The conclave is a step towards building a knowledge-sharing society through a platform in which innovators meet educators ,with a sea of experts and investors in attendance.

WBPCB to organise workshops in schools ahead of Diwali

Ahead of Diwali Festival, the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) will organise workshops in schools across the State to raise awareness about sound and air pollution among students.

According to a WBPCB official said, the workshop will sensitise the students about decibel limits and perils of sound and air pollution as they enjoy the firecrackers during the festival the most.

Few such workshops have already been organised for students of some schools in Salt Lake before the Durga Puja. The board is expected to organise more such workshops in other schools across the state in the coming days.

According to official, to keep a tab on sound pollution, WBPCB has also handed over around 720 sound limiter devices to Kolkata Police and Bidhannagar police commissionerates. The device will cops to monitor the sound levels during the festive days.

IIM Bangalore’s faculty to be honoured with Teaching Innovator Award 2016

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has selected Prof P C Narayan of Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore – A faculty from the Finance and Accounting field, for “Teaching Innovator Award-2016”.

Pro Narayan will be awarded at a ceremony by the MHRD, soon, for his teaching innovation titled “Transitioning from a ‘Teacher-centric’ to a ‘Student-centric’ Classroom and Online Learning”.

Narayan has used the videos of the courses taught by him at IIM Bangalore innovatively. He integrated over 120 videos with MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) in flipped classroom format for easy learning of students.  

Other than Prof P C Narayan, Prof P D Jose, faculty from the Strategy area and Prof Ramya Ranganathan, from the Organizational Behaviour and Human Resource Management field at IIMB, were among the 15 finalists for the Award. The premier management institute – IIM Bangalore was the only institution from across the country with three of its faculty among the 15 finalists.

Over 300 applications were received for the Award, of whom 50 were shortlisted for the next round and 15 of them made it to the finals.

CBSE: Aadhaar number mandatory for registration in class 9, 11 registration

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made it mandatory for students to attach their Aadhaar Number for registration of Class 9 and 11.

A circular released by the board recently in this regard has listed detailed rules for the registration of students in class 9 and class 11 of CBSE affiliated schools.

“All CBSE affiliated schools should register themselves before proceeding for online submission. They can use the password and ‘Affiliation Number’ as user ID already available with them. Newly affiliated schools should contact the concerned Regional Office of the CBSE for obtaining password,” reads the circular.

Explaining about making the Aadhaar number compulsory for registration, the CBSE revealed “Wherever Aadhar number is not available; Aadhar enrolment number can be provided. Residents of Indian states where Aadhar enrolment is not being done may provide Bank details in lieu of Aadhar.”

The foreign nationals registering for class 9 and 11 of CBSE will require to their passport number or Social Security Number/ID Number issued by the foreign country.

It should be noted that those registered in class 9 shall have to appear for mandatory board exam next year.

HRD Minister launches Diploma in Elementary Education for untrained teachers

The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) has designed a one-time Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) course for in-service untrained teachers training. Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar launched the teacher training programme in New Delhi.

The programme is designed for all government/government aided/private unaided recognised in-service untrained teachers of elementary schools. “Approximately 15 lakh teachers have been enrolled in the programme so far,” said the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Javadekar further added that the all untrained teachers are to be trained by 2019. “The government is committed to improve the education system and will be training approximately 15 lakh untrained teachers by 31st March 2019 and teachers will get diploma after the successful completion of the course,” he said.

Prof. C.B Sharma, Chairman, NIOS said that training isn’t just important to any institution, it is vital also. The way teachers teach is of critical concern in any reform designed to improve the quality.

The programme is available in online and distance learning (ODL) mode. “NIOS has been focusing on the quality and excellence in the training aspects of the in-service teachers across the country,” the Ministry said.
