KVPY begins online application process

The application process for Kishor Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) Aptitude Test has started and is open for Indian nationals. The process started on 16 July and the last date to apply for the test is 23 August, 2017.

The exam is scheduled to be held in 54 cities on 5 November, 2017.

Initiated and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, KVPY is an ongoing National Programme of Fellowship in Basic Sciences and meant to identify and give scholarships to deserving students for basic science courses and research career in the field of science.

However, as per the interim order of the High Court of Karnataka, Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) / Person of Indian Origin (PIO) students will be allowed to write the KVPY Aptitude Test 2017.

Eligibility Criteria:

Stream SA: Students in XI Standard with the Science Subjects in the academic year 2017-18 with a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in the X Standard Board Examination.

Stream SX: Students in XII Standard/ (+2) (Science subjects) during the academic year 2017-18 and with a minimum of 75% (65% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination.

Stream SB: Students in the 1st year of the undergraduate program in Basic Sciences, Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to

B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./Int. M.S. during the academic year 2017-18 with a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the XII Standard Board Examination.

Fellowship

For all three streams, during 1st to 3rd years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math. / Integrated M.Sc. /M.S., a monthly grant of Rs 5,000 and an annual contingency grant of Rs 20,000.

During  M.Sc.  or 4th to 5th  years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Math./M.Stat., there will be a monthly grant of Rs 7,000 and an annual contingency grant of Rs 28,000.

IGNOU opens student support service centre in Bengaluru

The Indira Gandhi Open University (IGNOU)Regional Centre, Bengaluru, has opened a student support service centre here.

Karnataka Minister for Medical Education Sharanprakash Patil lauded the services of IGNOU, saying: “Only 22% of the students in the college-going age group are in the higher education system in the country and this should improve.”

He said distance education is playing its role in filling the gap by providing facilities for the left out groups.

Established in 1987, the Bengaluru Regional Centre was formally inaugurated by the then Education Minister, Govt. of Karnataka, Jeevraj Alva on February 1, 1989. Till September 1996, it was housed in the Directorate of Collegiate Education (Govt. of Karnataka) premises just adjacent to Vidhana Soudha. It moved to a spacious rented building at Jayanagar from September 1996.

Delhi Government to set up Hindi Literary Clubs

In a move to stimulate and promote Hindi language, the Delhi government has planned to set up Hindi Clubs/ Sabhas.

Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Tuesday urged government officials to establish Hindi books clubs as part of promoting the language in the country, a government official said.

The aim is to set up the Hindi literary clubs to encourage the reading and discussions of the language by making it accessible. With this initiative, people at large will be able to hold literary discussions and meetings which will help unite the society.

“For discussion over Hindi literature the Deputy Chief Minister have come with a proposal to set up Hindi Literature Discussion Clubs/Sabhas, the official said, adding that Sisodia is of the view that “such discussions should come out of Lutyens’ Delhi and should be done in the Mohallas as well”.

The minister’s vision is that the society can be given right direction with the help of literature because literature keeps thinking right and unites the society, the official added.

Details about the places of Hindi Clubs set ups, however, are yet to be disclosed.

Hindi language holds a very important part in the country’s functioning and bonding among citizens. And, on the other hand Literature connects the individuals, society through inked truths and ideas which are based on facts. This move of the government will enhance readers interest towards the Hindi Literature.

1,396 ITIs to be upgraded: Government

In a bid to improvise and enhance the quality of training, the Central Government has plans to advance 1,396  Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the country.

The initiative is intended to increase the level of training of ITI students as well as retraining of instructors to elevate  standards and quality in the sector.

As a way of introducing technology and innovation, the government will adopt public private partnership (PPP) model to provide quality training by exploring PPPs.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Skill Development Minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy said the Directorate General of Training under his ministry has been making continuous efforts to improve the quality of training being offered by the ITIs functioning in the country.

The government was upgrading infrastructure of the ITIs through two centrally funded schemes for industrial value enhancement and upgradation of 1,396 government ITIs through PPP, he added.

The minister, in a statement, revealed a number of other steps were also being taken for upgradation of quality of training in ITIs including training and re-training of ITI instructors, prescribing new affiliation norms for ITIs for quality training, grading of ITIs to evaluate their performance and ISO 29990 certification of ITIs to raise the overall quality and standards.

The step is aimed at improving the study environment, enhancing the quality of education and bring in newer innovation models for the study.

Engineering students to undergo three mandatory internships

In the wake of a lot of IT professions being removed from job recently due to lack of required practical skills, the Government has made it mandatory for students to do at least three internships during their duration of course.

The new rule would turn effective from the commencing academic session 2017-2018. It will be the sole responsibility of all the engineering colleges to ensure all students undergo internship.

According to the statistics of 2015-16, nearly 56 per cent of the engineering graduates remained unemployed.

Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar, said: “Every student in technical institute should undergo three internships each spanning four to eight weeks before completion of his/her under-graduation course.”

“The responsibility will be on the institute to help students find a suitable industry for the internship.”

As per the data of 2015-16, nearly 56 per cent of the engineering graduates remained unemployed.

Presently, the system of summer internships is being carried out only in reputed engineering colleges.

Identification mechanisms to be incorporated in degrees: UGC

In a bid to prevent the chances of replication of degrees, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed to all universities to incorporate the students photos and Aadhar numbers in degrees and certificates issued for higher education. The move is aimed at security and verification purposes.

This security feature aims to bring in uniformity and transparency in education system of the country.

Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mahendra Nath Pandey revealed in the Lok Sabha that the UGC has requested all universities to inscribe the name of institution in which a student is enrolled for a programme to study as well as the mode of delivery (regular, part-time or distance).

He said it has been requested to all the universities to introduce such identification mechanisms, as mentioned in the UGC vide letter dated March 21, 2017.

In the recent past, the UGC also revealed the names of self-styled and fake institutions and universities operating in the country. And, with concern to such issues, the UGC took steps to maintain standards of higher education in the country.

Singing Vande Mataram mandatory in Tamil Nadu schools, offices: Madras HC

Days ahead of the Independence Day, the Madras High Court (HC) has passed an order making mandatory playing and singing of the country’s national song — Vande Mataram — in Tamil Nadu educational institutions, government and private offices, and industries.

However, the court has also clarified in case any organisation or person is unable to sing, it must not be compelled to do so.

According to reports, Justice M V Muralidharan was quoted as saying that the National Song will be played and sung once a week in schools and once a month in office and all other work spaces.

The High Court has directed the Director of Public Information to upload and circulate the translated version of “Vande Mataram” in Tamil and English thereby making it available in the government websites and also in social media.

Youth of this country are the future and the court hopes and trusts that the order shall be perceived in the right spirit. The judge also expressed the hope that the decision will be implemented in letter and spirit by the citizenry of this great nation, said Justice M V Muralidharan.

Vande Mataram, a poem originally composed by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in the 1870s, was included by the poet in his 1881 novel ‘Anandamath’.

Later, the song’s first two verses were adopted as the national song of the country in 1947 following the independence of the country. The song had inspired independence movement for the past five decades.

The title ‘Vande Mataram’ literally means “I praise thee, Mother” or “I bow to thee, Mother”.

IIM Lucknow, HPCL ink MoU to advance energy start-ups

In a step to foster news ideas and innovations, the Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow (IIM-L) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) have signed an MoU.

The MoU was signed during Startup Pitch Day at the Noida campus of IIM-L. It’s a strategic partnership, which aims to incubate innovative ideas and business start-ups in the domestic energy sector.

Under the tie-up, the shortlisted start-ups will be able to avail seed funding, mentorship, trainings and will be incubated at IIM-L Enterprise Incubation Centre (L-INCUBATOR). The applications of start-ups were received mainly showing interest in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, Internet of things (IoT), solar energy, among others.

IIM-L received nearly 150 applications and after two rounds of screening, 12 applicants were shortlisted and invited for the pitching session, said IIM-L spokesperson.

The selected start-ups made presentations before steering committee comprising of HPCL and IIM-L faculties.

On the occasion, L-Incubator MD Akbar appreciating the start-up programme of HPCL said, “This agreement will unlock the unlimited and undeniable potential of the start-up ecosystem in India and will impact the economy as a whole.”

On this, HPCL Executive Director Rakesh Misri stated: “We are committed to foster new ideas in energy sector and promote entrepreneurship among the Indian youth. The MoU will play a vital role in promoting start-ups.”

NEET question papers to be similar in all languages: Javadekar

Vernacular question papers for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) will be a translation of question papers in English, Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has said.

Replying to a question about West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee recently stating that this year the students appearing for all medical entrance examination in vernacular languages had faced tougher questions than the ones set in English and Hindi, the Union Minister said: “The vernacular question papers for the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) — the all-India entrance examination for entrance to medical colleges — will just be translation of the question paper in English.”

Stating that it was about ‘one nation one test’ in engineering Prakash Javadekar said: “We are yet to take a call on this issue. It is in discussion stage.”

The NEET-UG is an entrance examination for students who wish to study any graduate medical course (MBBS/ dental course (BDS) or postgraduate course (MD / MS) in government or private medical colleges in the country. NEET-UG (Undergraduate) for MBBS and BDS courses are conducted by the CBSE.

Manipal University to organise seminar on Indian Art

Manipal University’s Centre for Creative and Cultural Studies will organise a national seminar and art exhibition on the Indian Art and Art History: Coastal (Karavali) Culture and Art Practices-Ideas, perspectives and challenges’ in Karnataka’s Udupi district on July 22 and 23.

The seminar aims at analysation and debate on the Indian art and art historical practices with a focus on culture and art practices of coastal Karnataka. It will reveal the reactions and reflections of artists on the regional concerns, Centre Coordinator K Unni Krishnan told media.

Experts would participate as resource persons in the seminar and deliver lectures. Prof BA Vivek Rai, the former Vice-Chancellor of Kannada University, Hampi, will inaugurate the conference.

Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Poornima Baliga will preside over the inaugural function.
