UNICEF Highlights Kerala’s Little KITEs as a Leading EdTech Initiative

In a significant endorsement of Kerala’s digital education initiatives, a recent UNICEF India study has praised the state’s Little KITE programme as a model for global education. The study, “Empowering Adolescents with Future-Ready Skills – The Inspiring Story of Little KITEs,” was released on Saturday, highlighting the programme’s impact on 2,174 high schools and its role in promoting future-ready skills and gender equality in STEM.

The report was received by Rani George IAS, Principal Secretary of the General Education Department, from Pramila Manoharan, UNICEF India’s educational specialist, in the presence of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and General Education Minister V Sivankutty.

Key Highlights of the Study:

  1. Impact and Reach: The Little KITEs programme, implemented by Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE), is recognized as the largest ICT network of students in India. It has significantly impacted high schools across Kerala, fostering creativity, and problem-solving skills, and bridging the gender gap in STEM education by encouraging girls’ participation.
  2. Economic Benefits: The programme’s use of Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) has saved Kerala Rs 3000 crore, demonstrating the economic benefits of opting for non-proprietary software. The report also noted that Finland has expressed interest in replicating the Little KITEs model.
  3. Global and National Alignment: The initiative aligns with global and national efforts to develop future-ready skills in line with the United Nations Global Framework. The study offered 10 data-driven recommendations, emphasizing the scalability and adaptability of Kerala’s KITE-led EdTech model.
  4. Community Involvement and Expansion: The UNICEF study recommended expanding the Little KITEs programme to all high schools and higher secondary levels in Kerala. It also suggested involving local bodies and communities to increase investment in public education.

Endorsements and Future Plans:

Dr. Akila Radhakrishnan, Social Policy Specialist with UNICEF India, emphasized that the Little KITEs programme is a unique FOSS-based EdTech intervention. “UNICEF is committed to sharing the success stories of Little KITEs with other states and countries,” she said.

K Anvar Sadath, CEO of KITE, expressed the organization’s eagerness to partner with UNICEF and other entities to expand the reach of Little KITE to new regions. “We are also looking for support from the FOSS community to develop AI capabilities,” Sadath added.

It has grown rapidly, promoting a wide range of students across the public school system to explore creativity and problem-solving, connecting school to life in innovative ways, and architecting safe digital futures.”

Chhattisgarh Schools to Offer Primary Education in 18 Tribal Languages

In a groundbreaking move to enhance education in tribal regions, the Chhattisgarh government is set to provide primary education in 18 local languages and dialects. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for the medium of instruction to be the mother tongue or local language at least up to the fifth standard.

An official from the Education Department stated that in these tribal areas, primary school exams can also be taken in local languages and dialects, ensuring that students can learn and be assessed in their native languages.

Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai has spearheaded this initiative, directing the State Education Department to develop and distribute bilingual books in 18 local languages and dialects at no cost. The focus is on providing high-quality educational resources to the children in these remote regions.

“The new initiative of providing education in the local language will also help preserve local culture and traditions,” said Chief Minister Sai during his address at the state-level ‘Shala Praveshotsav’ programme in Bagiya village, located in the tribal-dominated Jashpur district.

The ‘Shala Praveshotsav’ is an annual event aimed at motivating children to enrol in schools at the start of the new academic session. This year’s event was notably moved from the state capital, Raipur, to Bagiya, the hometown of the Chief Minister, underscoring the government’s commitment to grassroots educational development.

This pioneering step is expected to significantly impact the educational landscape in Chhattisgarh’s tribal areas, promoting literacy and the preservation of cultural heritage.

CM Patel: New NEP to Highlight the Valor of India’s Forgotten Heroes

In a call to acknowledge and celebrate India’s historical valour, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasised the significance of the new National Education Policy (NEP) in portraying the country’s true history and heroism. Speaking at Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University in Patan during the Rajmata Nayika Devi Gaurav Din event, CM Patel underscored the importance of recognising unsung heroes and heroines who have shaped India’s legacy.

Addressing the gathering on Sunday, the Chief Minister highlighted that the new NEP aims to provide a comprehensive and authentic depiction of India’s rich historical tapestry. “The stories of Lakshmibai, Rani Chenamma, and Rani Ahalyabai are well-known and celebrated. However, we equally must bring to light the bravery and courage of Nayika Devi,” he stated. Rajmata Nayika Devi, a historical figure celebrated for her military prowess, is credited with defeating the formidable army of Mohammad Ghori, a fact that CM Patel insists must be shared with the world.

The event, organised by the state unit of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, honoured Rajmata Nayika Devi’s contributions and legacy. CM Patel’s speech resonated with the audience as he called for the inclusion of her story in educational curricula, reinforcing the NEP’s goal of fostering a well-rounded and truthful historical education.

“Rajmata Nayika Devi’s courage should be presented to the world. She is credited with defeating the army of Mohammad Ghori,” the CM said. His words were met with applause and approval from those in attendance, who shared his sentiment that Indian history must be taught in its entirety, emphasising the courage and resilience of its heroes and heroines.

An official statement from the Chief Minister’s office reiterated the commitment to the NEP’s objectives. “The Union government’s new education policy will help our students learn the true history of valour and bravery,” it read. This policy is designed to provide academic knowledge and instil a sense of pride and patriotism among the youth by acknowledging the sacrifices and achievements of India’s historical figures.

The Rajmata Nayika Devi Gaurav Din event, named after the revered queen, saw a convergence of scholars, historians, and local dignitaries who discussed the impact of Nayika Devi’s legacy on contemporary Indian society. AICTE Unveils Financial Assistance Grant for Conference Hosting Institutes

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has launched a new initiative, the Grant for Organising Conference (GOC) scheme, to support AICTE-approved institutions hosting conferences across various disciplines. This scheme aims to enhance knowledge exchange and networking opportunities within the academic community.

Professor TG Sitharam, AICTE Chairman, highlighted the scheme’s goal of uniting academicians and experts from both national and international spheres to share their insights, experiences, and research outcomes. “This scheme will enable academia to disseminate and exchange knowledge with industry and other knowledge domains,” Professor Sitharam stated. He also underscored the importance of networking skills for students in technical and management fields.

The GOC scheme is structured into two categories:

  • Category A: Focused on conferences based on predefined themes announced by AICTE. Institutions can receive financial support for one-third of the conference expenditure, with a cap of INR 3 lakh.
  • Category B: Targeted at conferences proposed by institutions in emerging areas, core engineering, technical disciplines, management, hotel management, and various interdisciplinary fields. Financial assistance under this category is also one-third of the total expenditure, up to a maximum of INR 2 lakh. Additionally, Professor Sitharam announced the inclusion of BBA, BCA, and BMS colleges under Category B.

This initiative by AICTE is a significant step towards fostering academic and industry collaboration, promoting the sharing of innovative research, and advancing knowledge in technical and management domains. By offering financial support, AICTE aims to facilitate the organisation of conferences that can drive progress and innovation across various fields.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art video recording studio, marking a significant leap towards enhancing digital education. This cutting-edge facility enriches the learning experience for teachers, students, and parents worldwide.

The inauguration ceremony held at the Centre of Excellence in Delhi (East), was graced by prominent figures, including Rahul Singh, IAS, Chairman of CBSE; Himanshu Gupta, IAS, Secretary of CBSE; and Dr. Ram Shankar, Director (Training). Heads of various departments within the board were also present to witness this landmark event.

Cutting-Edge Technology

The newly launched studio is outfitted with the latest technology to ensure the production of high-quality educational content. Key features include high-definition cameras, advanced audio systems, green screens, and professional lighting setups. These state-of-the-art facilities will enable the creation of superior educational videos to be broadcast on the PM eVidya CBSE DTH Channel and other CBSE channels and portals.

This initiative is part of CBSE’s ongoing commitment to advancing digital education. The new studio will facilitate the production of diverse educational materials, making learning more accessible and engaging for students. By leveraging modern technology, CBSE aims to provide valuable resources supporting teaching and learning processes.

Education Minister Unveils Biannual Board Exam Plan for Class 10 and 12 from 2025-26

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has announced that Class 10 and 12 students can appear for board examinations twice a year starting from the 2025-26 academic session. This decision aims to alleviate academic stress among students.

The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for biannual board exams to provide students with multiple opportunities to excel academically. The New Curriculum Framework (NCF), introduced by the Ministry of Education in August last year, specifies that board examinations will be conducted at least twice annually, allowing students to improve their performance and retain their best scores.

During an event in Chhattisgarh, Pradhan engaged with students and asked for their feedback on the new policy. He encouraged them to take advantage of both exam sessions and keep their highest scores. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji’s vision through the NEP is to keep students stress-free, enrich them with quality education, maintain their cultural connections, and prepare them for the future. This is the formula for making India a developed country by 2047,” Pradhan stated.

It is important to note that the new biannual board exam system for Classes 10 and 12 is optional and not mandatory.

During his visit to Chhattisgarh, the Union Minister launched the PM SHRI (Prime Minister Schools for Rising India) scheme. In the first phase, 211 schools in the state, including 193 elementary and 18 secondary schools, will be upgraded using a ‘hub and spoke’ model, with each school receiving ₹2 crore for improvements. Under this model, a central mentor institution (the ‘hub’) will guide and support its associated schools (the ‘spokes’).

Chhattisgarh’s School and Higher Education Minister Brijmohan Agrawal has requested that more secondary and higher secondary schools be included in the scheme’s next phase, which Pradhan has acknowledged.

 

C-DAC and AICTE Ink MoU for HPC Talent Development

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) have formalized a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish an ecosystem dedicated to human resource development in high-performance computing (HPC) and related fields, as announced in a press release by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).

This collaboration aims to foster sustainable growth in HPC and its allied technologies through comprehensive training programs designed to enhance the instructional capabilities of master trainers in these domains. Additionally, C-DAC and AICTE will jointly develop quality improvement programs for educators from non-computer science disciplines, broadening their expertise in HPC and associated technologies.

To extend the reach of these educational initiatives, courses will be offered on the Ministry of Education’s SWAYAM platform, ensuring accessibility to students nationwide. Furthermore, C-DAC will provide its developed HPC learning platforms to selected institutes, enhancing the practical learning experience.

At the MoA signing ceremony, Prof. T. G. Sitharam, Chairman of AICTE, remarked, “With the signing of this MoA between AICTE and C-DAC, we are taking a significant step towards creating a robust ecosystem for High-Performance Computing education in India.”
