The centralized admission process (CAP) has decided to include arts stream after the hiatus of 13 years. Thousands of vacant seats due to non-interest shown by students in arts led to exit of the stream from CAP. Sanjay Jogdand, Police inspector, Nagpur stated that career-wise arts stream is not preferred by students as it is considered less remunerative. Students coming from arts background do not get proper recognition as compared to their counterparts from science background. Jogdand added that to make this stream popular, more job opportunities need to be created which in turn will elevate the esteem of arts stream.
Sakshi Khandelwal, second year student, LAD College stated that people’s attitude towards art stream does not encourage students. Moreover, majority of the population feels that this stream is for girls and subjects involved in it are related to house work. Khandelwal added that stakeholders have to conduct workshops and seminars in order to provide knowledge about the importance of arts stream. To facilitate this agenda, Nagpur University should put in efforts to provide more scope to students from arts stream.
