e-Learning vendors offer soft skills programmes to Indian students

Gurukul Online, Tata Interactive Systems, and 24X7 Learning have partnered with different colleges to provide soft skills like communication skills, expertise in spoken English in a blended and interactive manner.

Recently, Bangalore based education firm, 24X7 Learning has tied up IIT-Roorkee, Mumbai-based SNDT College and Manipur-based Oinam College to impart skill enhancement programmes to undergraduates. While Mumbai-based Gurukul Online has also joined its hands with Mumbai and Pune colleges like Pillai College, Ghatkopar College, Thakur College, SPN Doshi College, Acharya College, MMK College and IBMR College to provide similar courses in Mumbai and Pune. Tata Interactive Systems (TIS) is also offering sophisticated skill enhancement programmes to students in leading institutes such as IIM-Kolkata , XLRI and SP Jain Institute of Management and Research. Currently, the estimate of e-Learning market in India is around INR 1,200 crore and is growing at 30% annually. These courses are likely to be effective because students would get a mix of both, online interaction and classroom coaching. Normal classroom practices like students raising questions, getting evaluators to clarify doubts, online quiz and assignments are also possible in this form of education.

R-ADAG joins hands with OLPC to promote e-learning in India

Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group has partnered with One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) Foundation under which Reliance Communication (Rcom) is to provide Internet connectivity, network and logistics to the OLPC's India initiative.

Under the programme, every student will receive a water-proof and almost unbreakable laptop, which is priced at USD 188 to reduce the burden of the school bag and promote e-Learning in the country. Tina Ambani, wife of RADAG Chairman Anil Ambani invited state governments, NGOs, corporates, and media to participate in the programme, a pilot of which is already started in a school in tribal-dominated Khairat village, near Karjat in Maharashtra. OLPC programme is more application oriented rather than syllabus oriented.

Wipro, Infy, TCS come together to boost education

Wipro, Infosys BPO and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) are now coming together for education initiatives in India. Infosys BPO has launched Project Genesis to train faculty, while Wipro has recently launched programme, called Mission 10x.

The Misson 10x is likely to be launched next year and in the first year of its operation it will benefit four lakh students across the 10 universities and the IT giants will adopt their states. While TCS has joined hands with the Gujarat government to help students in upgrading their technology and programming skills. Infosys BPO's Project Genesis has trained around 11,000 students from 429 colleges across the states of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Orissa. According to vice-president (HR) of Infosys BPO Nandita Gurjar, almost 70 per cent of the students who have been trained as part of Project Genesis have been able to get jobs in various sectors. Wipro's Mission 10x aims to train 10,000 teachers by 2010.

NCERT trains Afghan academicians

National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is empowering the elementary education system in Afghanistan by providing a 40-day long training-cum workshop programme for academicians.

The ongoing training programme applies a multi-method approach that includes lectures, group-discussion and group-work. The 40-member Afghani delegation is head by Seddiq Weera, a senior policy advisor in Afghanistan's Ministry of Education, who comprises teacher educators and academics and also involved in school and teacher education. District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) and schools in Delhi as well as two Regional Institutes of Education (RIE) in Ajmer and Mysore will help them in giving field level experience.

First Inland donates computers to Nigerian University

Nigeria's premium bank, First Inland has donated computers to the undergraduate library of the Niger Delta University.

The donation was in fulfillment of the bank's resolve on Corporate Social Responsibility (CRS). The management of First Inland Bank invest to uplift the standard of education in tertiary institutions by supporting the use of Information and Communication technologies (ICT). Online help for Maharashtra (India) students

The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Ltd. (MKCL) has launched a Digital University or eSuvidha Scheme for students.

Once a student takes admission, the student will receive 16-digit permanent registration number, which will be unique across all the universities in country. With the use of this number, the student can create his log-in on Digital Universities portal which will give him to access a whole range of learning, administrative and general information. After registration students can get information about faculty, courses, syllabus, admission rules and procedures, details of scholarship and other benefit programs, educational loans available, employment related assistance, updates on competitive exams, awards and news and events on campus. Students can also carry out pre-examination and post-examination related tasks through this portal, like filling of examining form, getting examination time-tables, venue, hall tickets, eligibilities processing, e-statement of marks, applying form verification re-valuation, convocation and migration certificate. MKCL spent around Rs. 20 crore and took four years in developing this Digital University portal.

Illiteracy a key impediment to development and empowerment: E-9 conference on ICT for Literacy

The international conference of E-9 countries on ICT for Literacy, which was recently concluded in New Delhi recognises illiteracy as one of the key impediments to development and empowerment of the people.

The Planning Commission has laid emphasis on increased use of IT and ICT. The role of the private sector is considered important not only in implementing the computer-aided learning under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, but also in isolated efforts made by groups and individuals where a number of children as well as adults would get the benefit of literacy programmes. The E-9 countries are Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Egypt, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, China and India.

Cisco commits $ 10 million to ICT in Africa

Cisco has announced to invest $10 million to support ICT strategies in Africa.

In the first year of this multi-phase commitment, Cisco Systems Inc global networking company will provide US$1.75 million, followed by an additional US$8.25 million over the next three years to target Nigeria, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Cameroon, and Kenya. Funding will support ICT strategies designed to enable basic human needs, access to education, and economic opportunity. Cisco had already entered into a partnership agreement with Federal Ministry of Education. Cisco will be assisting the Nigerian government in training and strengthening the skills of about 20000 university graduates.

Intel to provide ICT education to students in Bangladesh

Intel announced introduction of its World Ahead Programme aiming at providing information and communication technology (ICT) education and its access to the general population in Bangladesh.

The programme will be implemented jointly with Grameen Solution in collaboration with the government. To attain the impacts, the Intel programme aims at improving four basic foundations ensuring access to information and communication technology (ICT), Internet connectivity, development of the content of local education, and training teachers in using the technology in educating children.

Intel has committed to donate about 1,000 computers to schools over the next three years. Intel will work with the government to implement the programme and will donate enough personal computers (PCs) next year to set up a PC lab in all 64 districts of the country.

Barrett and Grameen Solution's founder Prof Muhammad Yunus have been running education programmes in developing countries for a few decades, and in the last decade they have spent 1 billion US dollars. “We believe Intel will continue this programmes for decades,” Barrett said. They will offer low cost PCs on easy monthly installment, and will launch a project to set up telecentres across the country. Intel and Grameen have planned to make the Intel powered Classmate PCs available for students.

USDA awards more than US$ 22.3 Million for telemedicine, distance learning grants

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has selected 78 recipients for the grant of US$ 22.3 million for distance learning and telemedicine in 31 states.

The Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program is created to improve access to education and medical services through the use of technology. Out of the total, 38 million will be used to provide access to medical services, while 40 million will be used to improve educational opportunities. In Maine, a variety of education and healthcare projects include US$ 267,341 for Maine Administrative School District to purchase video conferencing equipment so that schools can share academic and special education resources and expand adult learning activities. Another US$ 399,817 will connect schools in Maine Administrative District so that they can share resources and access the Aroostook Mental Health Center for special needs students. Administrative District will receive US$ 378,661 to fund a TEC-NET project to provide students with an expanded curriculum, enhanced foreign language instruction and better Internet connectivity. Texas' Education Service Center Region will receive US$ 338,936 to expand distance learning for 30 additional sites in rural areas of central Texas and southern Oklahoma. Northwestern Oklahoma State University will increase access to higher education courses in five rural counties with the help of a US$ 256,390 grant.
