Chennai (India) Engineering College to get Digital Library

Chennai (India) based Salem Government College of Engineering, will soon get a Digital Library to access vast collection of e-Resources on various subjects. The Library would be subscribed to the Indian National Digital Library in Engineering Sciences and Technology (INDEST), All India Council for Technical Education consortium to get access to the e-Resources. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

The total investment on the project is around INR 2 million. Students would be able to access about 170 online journals through the consortium. The college has already networked the departments functioning in various blocks. The server at the digital library will also be brought into the network, enabling the students to access the resources through computers in their respective departments. A few computers will be installed in the library building also. 

USA Government gives funds for videoconferencing in schools

USA Government agencies are giving funds to put video conferencing systems in schools. The Rural Development under secretary Thomas Dorr, has given $25,853,991 funds of 103 Distance Learning and Telemedicine to provide educational and medical services to citizens of 38 states. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

The Fayette County (WV) School of the USA has received a grant of $490,657 from the USDA Rural Development Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Certification programme to install two-way video conferencing for its students to allow greater access to a wider variety of classes. Government agencies have partnered with New River Health Services to offer two-way conferencing to communicate from school to another school. 

EZ Vidya launches Chrysalis software for schools

Chennai (India) based Company, EZ Vidya has launched 'Chrysalis' a comprehensive computer science curriculum for classes I through X. This innovative curriculum will replace the conventional textbooks and classroom learning. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

The curriculum is aimed to make students `IT-capable than just IT- literate'. A typical classroom module from Chrysalis will encourage students to create multimedia packages on general topics. EZ Vidya has partnered Wipro in “teacher empowerment programmes” across the country. The company has also brought out a multimedia CD title `Thiruvalluva Ula” for the Azim Premji Foundation. The students will use sound and animation files in the module to create presentations.  According to Chitra Ravi, schools will adopt the curriculum to replace the conventional textbooks and classroom learning. 

UNRWA opens Japanese funded computer lab in Yarmouk refugee camp, Syria

United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has opened the Japanese funded computer lab at the Jerusalem/Yazour school in the Yarmouk refugee camp, Syria. This multi-purpose school will allow hundreds of Palestinian refugee students and the community to access computer technology and learning material.

Japan Government is funding the project, which includes seven computer laboratories, six multi-purpose rooms and a learning resource centre at UNRWA schools throughout Syria. Japan Government has contributed over two million US Dollars in projects funding for UNRWA's education, health and relief and social services programmes. Now students and teachers of refugee camp would be to explore the world of computer technology. UNRWA is a humanitarian and human development Agency providing education, health care, social services, micro-credit and emergency relief to over 4 million registered refugees living in the Gaza Strip, West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic. In Syria, the Agency provides assistance to over 440,000 refugees.

KNUST students get benefits from broadband wireless Internet service

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) of Ghana has inaugurated a broadband wireless Internet and voice telephony facility in the campus. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

KNUST has inaugurated the e-Campus Network facility, which has the potential of transforming the mode of teaching and learning on campus. This facility will provide members of the university community with in-room and on-campus wireless Internet and voice telephony. The Universal Telephone Exchange Limited and Engineering Systems and Services Limited has collaborated with the KNUST to provide the service. KNUST is planning to set up the campus as ICT hub, which integrates all educational institutes with KNUST. This facility will enable students and lecturers to access Internet service from any location on campus for research and recreational purposes at their convenience.

e-Shiskha portal helps Indian students in making their concept easy

A Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has developed a collaborative e-Learning system and portal under its initiative Shiksha India, which will help Indian students to search difficult topics. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

The portal, www.eshikshaindia.in can be accessed by anyone free of cost. It will equip schools with e-Learning facilities to help students understand difficult concepts better. The portal is basically designed for students aged between 12 years to 17 years on subjects like physics, biology, chemistry, English and geography. It will also contain other languages, including English, Hindi and Tamil. Shiksha has developed the ready content, which offers e-Tools and e-Resources as well as other software that teacher can use to create her own online course for students. The portal will work on the lines of operating system Linux, where students and teachers can contribute matter on topics. It functions like Wikipedia in the sense that teachers and students can collaborate with each other; add to the already existing data using the wikiengine called mediawiki.

Indian Government's elementary education programme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is now on its track. The programme had spent 70% of its allocation at the end of December 2006.< ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

In this financial year, the programme has already utilised 75% of funds available and the progamme has shown its improvement in fund utilisation over the last fiscal. Assam and Orissa states have shown their improvement in fund utilisation, while Tamil Nadu has performed poorly in the quarter ending. States like Punjab has spent 67% of the available funds. According to Ministry, the improvement in utilisation of funds can be attributed to better project management and a stable team implementing the project at the ground level. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is structured as a long-term partnership between the Centre and states. Unlike with other centrally assisted schemes, funds for the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan are directly released by the Centre to state Sarva Shiksha implementation societies.

The International Institute of Information Technology-Bangalore (IIIT-B) and Chennai (India) based companies, Lattice Bridge has developed mobile phone based technology, which is specially designed to help the visually impaired and tourists find their way in a particular location. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

User has to call on a designated number and ask question and then user will receive an automated response about their queries. IIIT-B is developing the server application, and Lattice Bridge is designing the voice engine, which converts text messages to speech. Spinfo will provide the geographical content. Initially, the project would be tested in Bangalore and Chennai and later on it would be extended to other cities. If the user has a GPS-enabled phone with bluetooth capability, then the software can ascertain the caller's location more precisely. 

Tamil Nadu (India) Govt. provides computer-aided learning in elementary schools

The State Government is introducing computer-aided learning (CAL) in elementary schools as a part of innovations in classroom `transactions' in Tamil Nadu, India. < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

 

This initiative step will improve the quality of education in all government elementary schools schools and the State is leading on that front due to a sustained focus on reducing dropouts and creating quality infrastructure.
