The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the STARS project under the New Education Policy to support states in strengthening the school education system. The development was confirmed by Union Minister Prakash Javadekar.

Javadekar said the Modi government has started implementing the NEP-2020 and as part of the process it has approved the Strengthening Teaching-Learning and Results for States (STARS) project.

The centrally sponsored project will be implemented by the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education. It will cover Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Odisha, he said.

The World Bank-supported project is estimated to cost Rs 5,718 crore, he said.

The project aims to support the states in developing and improving school education outcomes, the minister said.

The NEP was passed by the Union Cabinet to bring revolution in education sector. The policy will be implemented across the country phase wise.

Navkis College of Engineering aims to be a pioneer in nurturing engineers to be agile and knowledgeable creators and problem solvers. Our workshops or research centres will encourage students to build models, working as well as simulation models, even by providing finances and aids from the institution. What are steps Navkis is taking to make students future ready?

As claimed by the National Education policy 2020, I am also of the firm opinion that it is a game-changer, and if adopted, it will change the future of our nation at an accelerated pace. According to this, every student whether he/she is from a rural area or urban area will have a similar kind of education along with nutritious food and is allowed to learn in their native language during the first five years. As they go up in the learning ladder, students can specialize in one major field and along with it they can learn any subject of their interest from any field. With the implementation of the concept centralized education administration ( i.e. University or directorate of Education Departments) every institute will be responsible for deciding and educating the younger generation. The main challenges to achieving this goal are two-fold. One is how to finance this, and the second is a more responsible and learned board of administrators at each school level.

The NEP 2020 is seen as a game changer in education sector, if yes how it will bring new things and according to you what are the challenges for the implementation of the policy?

Undoubtedly, the dynamics of education has changed mainly due to the arrival as well as adaptation of newer methods of both teaching as well as learning methods due to technological revolution specifically in the domain of digital electronics. Apart from this, teachers and administrators at Navkis have realized that students of the present generation are highly smart, fast learners and their parents are more caring and have realized the importance of education. Teachers at Navkis are widely using computers, projectors and other electronic devices to teach classes online and internet facility along with soft wares such as Upswing Classroom to conduct off-line classes. Also, teachers at Navkis have proficiency in handling all modern digital teaching aids and efficient enough to learn newer procedures.

Delhi govt urges CBSE to reduce syllabus and postpone exams till May

In a major development, Delhi Government has written a letter to the Central Board of Secondary Education, (CBSE) urging it to postpone the March 2021 Board Examinations to May. The state government has also asked the board to consider reducing the CBSE 10th 12th Board Exam 2021 syllabus further.

Schools in India have remained closed for nearly 7 months in this academic year. While the Central Government has now permitted the reopening of schools, states have decided to defer it. Many states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, etc. have decided to keep the schools closed, even for students of classes 9 to 12 till at least October 31.

With the schools closed, the Delhi Governments (where most schools are affiliated to CBSE) has written a letter, asking for more time before the Board Examinations are conducted. Delhi, too, has decided to keep the schools closed till October 31.

“Though online, semi-online teaching learning activities are being conducted through live classes as well as worksheets or activity sheets but it cannot replace the physical classroom teaching learning process,” the DoE said in the letter.

CBSE Board Exams for classes 10 and 12 are conducted in the month of February to April. The board had revised the dates from 2019, to begin the Board Exams from February 15 instead of its customary March 1 dates. This year, however, there are wide speculations that the Board Exams may be pushed to May, to compensate for the closure of schools in the country since March 2020.

Two private schools in Ludhiana reopen for Class 12 students

In a huge development, after seven months two private schools in the Ludhiana affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reopened for students of board classes. However, it was mandatory for students to have written consent from their parents.

Both, DAV Public School, BRS Nagar and BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar reopened the schools for students of Class 12 with precautionary measures in place.

Students visiting the schools had to undergo thermal screening, oximeters were used to check oxygen saturation levels and regular hand sanitisation was ensured. Circles were marked at the entrance gate and in corridors so that social distancing is maintained.

Tripods and wi-fi facility has been provided to all teachers so that they can also conduct online classes simultaneously. Around twelve students were accommodated in every room and social distancing norms were followed.

Students look very excited about attending school after seven months. Around 150 students visited schools for doubt clearance with their parents’ consent. For the morning shift, students of Class 10 reported at 8.30 am; while Class 12 students reported at 11 am for the next shift.

Staff was deployed at the school’s entrance to check temperatures of students, hand sanitisation was ensured and students were asked to follow social-distancing norms.

Calcutta HC orders private schools to offer 20 pc reduction in fees

The Calcutta High Court has ordered 145 private schools in city to offer a minimum of 20 percent reduction in fees across the board. The court has also directed that the non-essential charges for using facilities that are not availed will not be permissible.

The parents of the students in the 145 schools around the city had earlier moved a petition in the High Court asking for a reduction in the school fees since only online classes are being conducted during the pandemic situation.

The High Court has further stated that there will be no increase in the fee during the 2020-21 financial year and from April 2020 until the month following the reopening of the schools, all the 145 schools will offer a minimum of 20 percent reduction in the fees across the board. The division bend also directed that the non-essential charges for the fasciitis like additional charges for the lab, craft, sports facilities, or extracurricular activities that are not being used currently will not be permissible during the months that the schools have remained closed.

One of the judges at the bench further stated that there are many parents who are diverting a substantial part of their resources to get their children admitted in high-schools with superior educational infrastructure and amenities.

A minimum of 20 percent reduction in the monthly tuition fee will be based on the tuition fee charged for the corresponding month in the previous financial year. The court has also stated that there will be no refund of fees that have been paid already.

AICTE, Microsoft join hands to skill next gen students

To empower students for future-ready, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has joined hands with Microsoft to provide uninterrupted online learning.

As part of the partnership, over 1,500 course modules from Microsoft will be made available to students and educators free of cost through AICTE’s e-learning portal ELIS.

Microsoft’s learning resource centre Microsoft Learn has been integrated with the ELIS platform to provide access to personalised learning paths and resources for students, covering a broad range of technologies including AI, IOT, data science and cloud computing among others.

Microsoft India President Anant Maheshwari said COVID-19 has accelerated the need for upskilling and shown clearly that the future of learning will be profoundly personalised and supported by technology.

“Our collaboration with AICTE reflects our commitment to building a strong skilling ecosystem in the country and ensure continuity in learning,” he said in a statement.

AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe said upskilling is very important to enhance employability opportunities for students.

“AICTE is happy to partner with Microsoft to help students get an opportunity to be hands-on with the latest technology and build products and services for the future,” he said.

Microsoft will host live webinars on next-generation technologies for
students of AICTE.

Punjab Education Secretary lauds department for taking new initiatives

In a major development, Punjab Education Department has transformed this challenge into an opportunity during the COVID era. He also lauded teachers for their exceptional work during the unprecedented times.

Krishan Kumar, Secretary, School Education Department said “they have been forced to close schools to maintain social distance, still the department has taken new initiatives in the field of education and it has opened up new avenues during this pandemic.”

He also said that the department adhering to the precautions of the COVID-19, has been accomplishing many tasks with incredible zest, be it ‘Mission Cent Percent’ , ‘Smart Schools’, ‘English Medium’, ‘Each One, Bring One’ , ‘Ghar Baithe Sikhia’, ‘Punjab Achievement Survey’. ” Vidhayak Muqable” to commemorate the 400th Parkash Purb of Sri Guru Teg Bahadur ji, distribution of text books, Mid Day Meal and above all strengthening bond with the parents in particular and society in general to make all the drives into mass movement.

As a result, the change in public perception has visibly been witnessed. The public has started reposing faith in Govt. Schools, which is quite evident from the fact that an increase in enrollment of about 3.45 lakh students has been recorded, out of which more than 1.50 students have shifted from private schools.

Krishan Kumar said that the change in public perception is attributed to the augmentation of infrastructural facilities, quality education and the affectionate care being provided by the dedicated teachers. Now, the challenge before the department is to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the parents, who have got their wards shifted from the private schools.
