Delhi govt releases Rs 32.1 cr

In a huge relief to Delhi Universities, the Delhi government has released a grant-in-aid of Rs. 32.1 Crore to six of the affiliated colleges. However, the Delhi University Teachers Association has called the grants inadequate to the needs of the colleges.

The list of colleges that have received the grants include Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education and Sports Science which received Rs. 4 Crore followed by Acharya Narendra Dev College granted Rs. 6.80 Crore, Shaheed Rajguru College of Applied Sciences for Women – Rs. 4.65 Crore, Maharaja Agrasen College – Rs. 5.80 Crore, Rs. 4.50 Crore to Bhaskaracharya College of Applied Sciences and Bhim Rao Ambedkar College – Rs. 6.35 Crore.

The Delhi Government and 12 colleges fully funded by the government have been in a fix over the release of grants and the colleges have alleged that the grants released by the city dispensation have been inadequate and they have not been able to pay the salaries to the staff members since May 2020. The DUTA has stated that the allocated amount does not cover all the expenses of the colleges.

The DUTA has further added that they hope that the Delhi Government will transfer the funds to the colleges immediately but six colleges still await the sanctions. The DUTA has further added that the association is with all the teachers from Delhi University are with the colleagues of the 12 colleges and has taken the initiative to remind the government that the policies taken will not work.

Pokhriyal asks CBSE and UGC to coordinate on CBSE compartment exam results

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal has asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Chairman and the UGC chairman to coordinate meetings with regard to the date of the CBSE compartment results. The directive was issued by the union minister after concerns regarding the delay in the declaration of the results.

The Supreme Court had earlier asked the CBSE to announce the CBSE compartment Exam Results at the earliest. The top court also asked the UGC to ensure that the students get admissions to the college in the academic year.

The apex court asked the UGC not to declare the academic calendar until September 24, 2020, although a revised calendar was released by the education minister based on which the admissions to the 2020-21 first year UG and PG courses will be completed by the end of October 2020. As per the revised academic calendar, the new academic session is scheduled to commence from November 1, 2020.

The CBSE compartment exams have Over 2 lakh students from the class 10 and 12 are appearing for the CBSE compartment exams in across 1268 exam centres across the country. The board has clarified that all the necessary safety precautions are being followed at the exam centres. According to the date sheet released the class 10 CBSE compartment exams will continue until September 28, 2020, while the class 12 compartment exams will continue until September 30, 2020.

While addressing the convocation of IIT, Guwahati through video-conferencing, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi elaborated that all the knowledge including science is a means to solve the problems.

The PM urged the youth to be future ready and future fit, saying it’s their dreams and aspirations which shape the future of India. He expressed happiness that IIT Guwahati has already started making efforts towards this direction.

PM Modi lauded the efforts of the institute in contributing towards making the country self-reliant in spite of the difficulty in conducting academic sessions and continuing research work, during this pandemic.

Over the NEP 2020, Prime Minister said the new policy is meant for the needs of the 21st Century and to make India a global leader in science and technology. Modi also said the NEP 2020 has been made multi-disciplinary and offers flexibility of choosing various courses and allows multiple entry and exit points.

The PM pointed out that the NEP also proposes a National Research Foundation for better coordination with all funding agencies regarding research funding and provide funds for all disciplines, be it science or humanities.

Prime Minister said the NEP allows foreign universities to set up their offshore campuses in India, which would give global exposure to Indian students. He said NEP will establish India as major education destination to the World.

Rajya Sabha passes bill to tag national importance to five new institutes

In a major development, the Rajya Sabha has passed a bill declaring five newly established Indian Institutes of Information Technology, IIITs as institutions of national importance. These IIITs have been set up as Public-Private Partnership, PPP and are located in Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala, and Raichur.

The Indian Institutes of Information Technology Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 was passed by Lok Sabha in the previous session on March 20, 2020. It was introduced in the upper by the Union Minister of Education, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.

Out of the 25 IIITs in the country, 5 are being run by the central government and 15 IIITs are operating under public-private partnership mode.

The minister said, “We have brought the proposal before this House to bring five new operational institutes which are located and have started operations in Surat (Gujarat), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Bhagalpur (Bihar), Agartala (Tripura) and Raichur (Karnataka) to bring under this acts.”

As per him bringing the five new institutes under IIITs Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020 would turn them into an institute of national importance and they would then have the right to legally issue diploma, degree, doctorate and more.

“These 5 IIITs along with 15 other IIITs, which are also built on public-private partnership mode would now be able to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology, BTech or Master of Technology, MTech or PhD degree,” the minister said.

Pokhariyal: IIT Indore to teach Maths and Science in Sanskrit

The Union Education Minister Dr Ramesh Pokhariyal took to his social media account to announce that Indian Institute of Technology Indore has introduced a course in which it would be conducting mathematics and science classes in the Sanskrit language. The premium institute would help the National Education Policy 2020’s vision to be forwarded.

Taking his twitter, the union minister said “The NEP-2020 will make the country multi-lingual, hopeful. It will stand on the basis of Indianness and reach international limits, it will be effective and will help in ensuring the continuance of dialogue. It will also be inclusive.”

The Indian Institute of Technology would be taking up classes in Sanskrit was earlier announced in August end 2020 where the knowledge would be imparted from ancient Sanskrit texts.

It was titled “Understanding Classical Scientific Texts of India in an Immersive Sanskrit Environment”. As per an official of the IIT Indore, “the course was started to in a bid to expose the present generation to ancient knowledge.”

This course would be divided into two parts in which all the candidates would at first be taught the nuances of Sanskrit which would help them build their understanding of the language and the second part would be teaching them classical mathematics in Sanskrit too.

UGC directs Universities to start new sessions from Nov 1

In a major development, University Grants Commission (UGC) asked all the universities to start the classes for the new sessions from November 1 onwards. The UGC has issued a revised academic calendar. The first-year classes for undergraduate and postgraduate courses can begin in November. The varsities have been asked to wrap up the admission schedule by November 30.

The alternative academic calendar released by UGC on April 29 suggested that classes of first-year students should begin on September 1 and final year exams should be conducted from July 1 to July 15. However, due to the pandemic, the calendar had to be revised and the high education regulator mandated the conduct of final year exams or terminal semester exams by September end.

But now, as per the revised guidelines, the academic session 2020-21 may begin from November 1 for first-year students. In case there is a delay in the declaration of results in the qualifying exam, the universities may plan and start the academic session by November 18.

The commission further added in the revised calendar that a full refund will be made on account of the cancellation of admissions/ migration of students up to November 30. Thereafter, on cancellation/ withdrawal of admissions up to December 31, 2020, the entire fee collected from a student be refunded in full after deduction of not more than Rs 1000 as processing fee.

The CBSE Board is all set to commence the CBSE 10th and 12th Compartmental Exams 2020 from today. The CBSE Board Compartmental Exam 2020 is being held for students who were unable to qualify in the exam held earlier for which results were declared in the month of July 2020. Compartmental Exams will act as a second chance for such students to try and re-qualify the examination without having to wait for a complete year and join college and or other higher studies option.

The board has confirmed that around 2.38 lakh students from Class 10 and Class 12 would be appearing for CBSE Compartmental Exams 2020. Of the total number of students, as many as 1,50,198 Class 10 students and 87,651 Class 12 students will be appearing for the exam which is commencing today. Earlier in the month, the board issued datesheet as well as CBSE Compartmental Exam 2020 admit card for all the candidates, which also includes the clear instructions and precautionary measures that are to be followed by the students while appearing for the exam.

CBSE Board has reiterated that students’ safety remains its top most priority while conducting the CBSE Board Compartmental Exam 2020.

Key guidelines for CBSE 10th and 12th Compartmental Exam 2020 are as follows:

Students, teachers and other staff members visiting the school premises for Compartmental Exams will have to mandatorily wear face masks covering nose and mouth, and hand gloves.

Students have been allowed to carry hand sanitizers to ensure proper hand hygiene

Students will have to compulsorily follow social distancing guidelines

Parents have been asked by the board to sensitize students about the COVID-19 guidelines and safety norms that are to be followed while they are at the exam hall

JEE Advanced 2020 admit card released

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has released the JEE Advanced 2020 examinations admit card online. Students who have applied for the exams can now visit the official website of the institute to download the JEE Advanced 2020 admit card– jeeadv.nic.in. To download the JEE Advanced 2020 examinations students are required to enter the login details in the JEE Advanced 2020 admit card link provided on the official website.

The JEE Advanced 2020 Exam is scheduled to be held on 27th Sept as a screening test for admission to IITs and IISc. The admit cards being released today for JEE Advanced 2020 exam will be mandatory document on the basis of which candidates will be allowed entry inside the examination hall.

Therefore, it is important for candidates to download them at the earliest and also verify all the details provided on it are correct. The hall tickets provided to IIT aspirants would include exam date, time, IIT zone, centre address and other details related to the candidates

-Click on the “JEE Advanced Admit Card 2020 Download ” link.

-Input your Registration number, date of birth, mobile number and email ID.

-Verify all the details and Click on the Login button.

-JEE Advanced Admit Card 2020 will be displayed on the screen.

Supreme Court quashes NLAT-2020 entrance exam

In a major move, the Supreme Court on Monday rejected NLSIU Bengaluru’s notification for a separate entrance exam, the National Law Aptitude Test-2020 held on September 12, for admission to its five-year integrated BA LLB (Hons) programme.

While cancelling the NLAT-2020 entrance exam, the apex court also directed that admissions in all 22 National Law Universities (NLUs) be conducted in accordance with CLAT-2020 which is scheduled to be held on September 28.

A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan passed the order on a plea challenging NLAT-2020 filed by former NLSIU vice chancellor Professor R Venkata Rao and the parent of an aspirant. The bench, also comprising Justices R S Reddy and M R Shah, said all NLUs should start their academic session by mid October.

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralised national level entrance test for admissions to 22 NLUs in India. Bengaluru’s National Law School of India University is one of them. On September 17, the top court reserved its order on the plea seeking quashing of the NLAT-2020 notification.

NLSIU Bengaluru defended its decision in the apex court to hold a separate entrance examination instead of CLAT.

The bench, which said it is an important matter which needs to be decided, had issued notice to the university and its vice chancellor Professor Sudhir Krishnaswamy and sought their responses on the plea.

AICTE ask engineering institutes to allow diploma students for B.Tech courses

In major move, the technical education regulator, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has asked states to ensure that diploma students are not turned away by engineering institutes from taking admission to B.Tech courses.

The regulatory body after receiving complaints against engineering colleges for refusing admission to diploma-qualified students applying for B.Tech courses under the lateral entry scheme, has also advised institutions to admit such students.

A notice issued by the AICTE says: “It has come to the knowledge of AICTE that some of the AICTE institutions are refusing Diploma qualified students for lateral entry admission under Engineering and Technology courses with restricted discipline only.”

As per the AICTE approval process handbook for the year 2020-21, there is no such restriction in the admission of diploma students to undergraduate engineering and technology courses under lateral entry.

Any student who has passed diploma examination with at least 45% marks (40% for reserved category) in any branch of engineering in the second year through lateral entry, depending on vacancies.

The AICTE circular states: “Therefore, all the State Government/ Universities are requested to inform all the institutions falling under their jurisdiction to adhere to the condition mentioned above for the admission of diploma qualified students in undergraduate courses as per the Approval Process Handbook Clause 1.3 for lateral entry admission.”
