
University of Galway has strengthened its engagement with India through a series of strategic academic and research collaborations in Delhi, aimed at expanding global learning opportunities, student mobility, and institutional partnerships.
As part of the initiative, the university signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Law University Delhi to promote academic exchange, joint research, faculty and student mobility programmes, and collaborative teaching initiatives.
The partnership reflects a shared focus on strengthening international collaboration and building globally connected learning ecosystems at a time when universities worldwide are increasingly emphasizing interdisciplinary research and cross-border academic engagement.
Alex Metcalfe, Vice President International at University of Galway, said India remains a strategically important region for the university. He noted that the collaboration with NLU Delhi and broader engagement with Indian academic stakeholders reinforces the institution’s commitment to strengthening international mobility, knowledge exchange, and long-term educational ties between Ireland and India.
Commenting on the partnership, G S Bajpai said the MoU will support collaborative research, idea exchange, and international academic opportunities for students and faculty members.

During the visit, University of Galway also hosted a reception in Delhi attended by representatives from the Embassy of Ireland, Education in Ireland, academic institutions, alumni, students, and industry stakeholders. The event served as a platform to strengthen dialogue around the evolving India-Ireland education partnership landscape.
A special felicitation ceremony was also organised to recognise three Indian high school students from Delhi Public School R.K. Puram and K.R. Mangalam World School who completed an online biotechnology research internship with the university. Kevin Kelly presented certificates to the students, highlighting the importance of early research exposure and international academic collaboration.
The university further announced scholarship facilitation initiatives for Indian students interested in pursuing higher education opportunities in Ireland. Merit- and excellence-based scholarships are available for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple disciplines, reinforcing the university’s focus on accessibility and global talent development.
