IIT Madras, through its AI education initiative Bodhan AI, has launched an ambitious national programme to train one million teachers in artificial intelligence by 2027, aiming to integrate AI into everyday classroom teaching across India.
The initiative, titled “AI Literacy for Teachers,” was announced at the IIT Madras Technology Summit 2026 by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The programme seeks to make AI a practical classroom assistant for educators rather than just an optional technology tool.
Under the programme, teachers will receive training in using AI for lesson planning, content creation, multilingual teaching support, assessments, worksheet generation, and student feedback systems. Pilot projects are expected to begin in selected schools before a wider national rollout.
V Kamakoti said AI literacy among teachers will play a foundational role in improving pedagogy, classroom efficiency, and learning outcomes at scale.

The initiative will be supported by organizations such as NCERT, SCERTs, and various education bodies, with the programme expected to cover teaching support across multiple Indian languages.
The move is part of India’s broader push toward AI-driven education and digital skilling, as institutions increasingly focus on preparing teachers and students for an AI-enabled future.
