Tamil Nadu Schools to implement compulsory Physical Education for classes 6–12

Tamil Nadu Physical Education

The Tamil Nadu government has made physical education (PE) classes mandatory for students in Classes 6 to 12 across all schools, including private institutions, as part of its efforts to promote fitness, sports participation, and holistic student development.

The School Education Department has issued detailed guidelines directing schools to conduct physical education classes without fail during the academic year. The move follows reports that some schools had been using PE periods for additional academic classes, limiting students’ access to sports and physical activities.

As part of the initiative, district physical education inspectors have been instructed to identify schools where playgrounds and sports facilities are underutilized. Schools will also be encouraged to provide additional sports training opportunities for interested students beyond regular class hours.

The decision aligns with the state’s broader focus on strengthening physical education in schools. Tamil Nadu has already introduced dedicated physical education textbooks for students and has been taking steps to make sports and fitness an integral part of school education.

The mandate is expected to ensure that students receive regular opportunities for physical activity, helping improve fitness levels, mental well-being, teamwork, and overall development alongside academic learning.
