Lokhande Prashant Sitaram

The Central Government has appointed senior IAS officer Lokhande Prashant Sitaram as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), while Varun Bhardwaj has been named the board’s new Secretary. The appointments come as part of a leadership reshuffle at India’s largest school education board.

A 2001-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, Lokhande Prashant Sitaram was serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs before taking charge as CBSE Chairperson. Varun Bhardwaj will assume the role of Secretary, succeeding Himanshu Gupta.

The appointments follow the transfer of former CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh and come amid scrutiny surrounding the board’s On-Screen Marking (OSM) system used for examination evaluation. The government has also initiated steps to review issues related to the implementation of the digital evaluation process.

The leadership change is expected to strengthen governance and ensure smoother functioning of the board as CBSE continues to oversee examinations and academic reforms affecting millions of students across the country.
