The schools in Karnataka will reopen for Classes 1 to 5 as the covid pandemic crisis are showing less impact.

Karnataka Chief Minister, Basavaraj Bommai, said, the government will soon make an announcement to reopen schools in the state.

“Already the experts committee has given the report, we will issue the order. Regarding, from when (to start the classes) and all those details, the Chief Secretary will hold a meeting with the education department,” the Chief Minister said while speaking to the reporters on Monday.

He added that as the covid cases in the state are declining, the government has already reopened schools for students of classes 6 to 8 from September 6 and for classes 9 to 12 from August 23.

However, the Primary and Secondary Education Minister B C Nagesh said the classes for 1 to 5 will reopen on the recommendations of the state’s Technical Advisory Committee on Covid 19.

“If they say from October 21, we will start; if they say a week later, we will start a week later.” Noting that the government wants to start classes from one to five in one go, he said, “but our plan is to have half-a-day classes during the initial one week or so, and thereafter full day classes, once students get used to it,” he said.

The decision to reopen schools for LKG (Lower Kindergarten) and UKG (Upper Kindergarten) children is yet to be taken.

ConveGenius has raised USD $5 million to expand its business from venture capitalists. It will launch its conversational AI platform, ConveGenius AI in India and global markets.

The funding was led by investors such as BAce Capital, Heritas Capital and 3Lines Venture Capital as well as existing investors, Michael and Susan Dell Foundation.

Convegenius.AI aims to expand its products on Whatsapp ecosystem and other Conversational AI-based channels horizontally, to service more customers across different verticals and allow developers to launch their solutions on the platform.

ConveGenius’ EdTech use case has blitz scaled to 14 million monthly active users in India with 35 million daily conversations, catering to 10 different languages and continues to grow at a rapid pace.

The learning platform aims at making quality education accessible for middle- and low-income groups across India and make quality education accessible to 100 million marginalized children in India.

Edtech startup Creative Galileo raises $2.5 mn funding from lenders

Edtech start-up Creative Galileo has raised $2.1 million seed funding from Kalaari Capital and well-known angels such as Harish Bahl, Shashin Shah, Jinesh Patel, Atul Nishar, Ashwin Puri and Giridhar Malpani.

The company will use the capital for scaling up business, enhancing and product development, creating engaging content, making partnerships with leading animation houses and hiring talent.

Announcing the funding, Prerna A. Jhunjhunwala, Founder, Creative Galileo, said, “We are excited to partner with Kalaari Capital, the CXXO initiative, and angel investors on our growth journey ahead. Our vision is to provide millions of children with access to high-quality content for learning in the early years for a solid foundation while keeping the process fun. Schools in Odisha to reopen on October 21 For Classes 8-11

Schools in Odisha will reopen for physical classes for students of Classes 8 to 11 standards for October 21.

The schools were closed down due to the Covid 19 pandemic last year. The cases are declining in the state as a result the authorities have decided to reopen schools in the state. “The COVID situation has been improving in the state. We will resume classroom teaching for students of classes 8 and 11 from October 21. A notification will be issued soon,” School and Mass Education Minister S R Dash said.

Classes have already resumed for 9 and 12 standards in the state with strict adherence to healthy safety. Decisions to reopen schools from Class 1 to 7 are yet to be taken.

The cases in Odisha were 521 new COVID-19 cases recently taking the caseload to 10,33,809 and fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 8,274.

Goa schools have been permitted to reopen for Classes 9 to 12 from October 18. The schools have to follow COVID 19 guidelines and standard operating procedures after attending schools.

In a circular issued by the government recently, the state government also has decided to reopen schools only after consulting with an expert committee. “Schools may, if required, initially follow a hybrid mode of teaching, that is, online as well as offline classes,” the circular stated. Masks, temperature checks and sanitisation are mandatory at the entry gates of institutions, and even the staff should be checked before entry, the circular added.

The department also has asked the management and heads of educational institutions to consider the infrastructure and conditions within schools.

Goa has recorded 68 cases, two casualties and total tally to 1,77,356 including 3,335 deaths. In fact, the coastal state has 679 active cases.

IBM to partner with states to expand ‘SkillBuild’ initiative in India

IBM has partnered with other state governments to expand its ‘SkillsBuild’ initiatives. This was informed by IBM India and South Asia head for Corporate Social Responsibility, Manoj Balachandran recently.

IBM is in talks with several states to expand its skills initiatives. The company has a plan to provide 30 million people with new skills that are required for the future jobs by 2030.

“Today, IBM commits to providing 30 million people with new skills by 2030. This will help democratize opportunity, fill the growing skills gap, and give new generations of workers the tools they need to build a better future for themselves and society,” IBM chairman and CEO Arvind Krishna said in a statement recently.

IBM will partner with more than 170 new academics and industry in order to achieve the goals. IBM has partnered with states such as Goa, Sikkim, AP, Telangana and now with Haryana.

“There are several other states where we are having talks for partnerships. Apart from SkillsBuild, we also have MoUs signed with 11 state governments for the STEM for Girls program where we are currently teaching over 300,000 students,” Balachandran said.

IBM also said it will partner with Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (DST), CBSE , Skill Development Councils in Goa, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, NPTEL- IIT-Madras etc for implementing skills initiatives throughout the country.

For implementing skills development initiatives, IBM has also partnered with the Haryana State Board of Technical Education and Uttar Pradesh SCERT (State Council of Educational Research and Training).

Colleges in Maharashtra to reopen on Oct 20 for fully-vaccinated students

The colleges and universities in Maharashtra will start physical classes from October 20. The students need to be fully vaccinated in order to attend offline classes. This was informed by the Maharashtra Higher Education Minister Uday Samant recently.

The staff and non-staff should complete their vaccination before attending the schools.

“All the non-agricultural colleges, state-run universities, deemed universities, self-financed universities and colleges affiliated to them can start holding physical classes from October 20. The teaching as well as non-teaching staff should complete their vaccination on priority,” the minister said.

He added that the students who have taken both the doses can attend the classes. Others should get the vaccination on a priority basis.

Every university needs to have the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and must adhere to it strictly, Samant said.

Unacademy Graphy acquires edtech startup Spayee for $25 million

Unacademy Group-owned Graphy has recently acquired edtech platform Spayee for $25 million. The focus is to increase the reach of the company and optimise the product offerings, the company said in a statement.

After this acquisition, Spayee will operate independently. Sumit Jain, co-founder and chief executive/ officer, Graphy, said, “The creator economy is booming and at Graphy, we are constantly on the lookout for avenues that will help creators grow and achieve their full potential. We share a common ethos with Spayee, recognising the need for an affordable, secured and scalable medium for content creators to build an online education business. And Spayee has built a winning proposition for creators.”

Spayee allows content creators to produce courses in the form of audio and video tutorials, portable document format (PDF) documents, quizzes, live classes, and assignments. Creators can build their own website and mobile apps on Android and iOS. Over 2,000 creators have created and launched platforms using the Spayee.

“We are confident that having them as part of the Unacademy Group will help us explore common synergies and build the world’s largest creator community,” added Jain.

Over 500 active creators are using the Spayee platforms. In fact, Graphy also launched programs like the Creator Grant and Graphy Select Accelerator to monetise their skills.

Earlier, Unacademy raised $440 million from General Atlantic, Tiger Global, and Softbank Vision Fund.
