Tamil Nadu AIADMK appeals to PM Modi to cancel NEET & Entrance exams

O. Panneerselvam

Panneerselvam has requested the PM to allow the State governments to conduct admissions for these courses based on marks obtained by students in Class 12 exams

CHENNAI AIADMK coordinator O. Panneerselvam has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting a uniform policy decision to abolish not only the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions but all common entrance examinations for admissions into all professional and other courses.

“The rural students and students from the lower socio-economic background are unable to compete with the urban students in such common entrance examinations, as they lack the requisite training institutions and timely access to course materials,” he contended.

“The NEET has also put the rural students from poor socio-economic backgrounds at a disadvantage due to the lack of geographical and financial access to requisite training institutions and materials. The rural poor students cannot afford the fees charged by the coaching centres, which impart training to face such competitive examinations,” he stated.

“Medical professionals were scarce in the rural areas and that it could be mitigated if rural students were admitted to medical courses in government medical colleges by abolishing the NEET exam, he contended. The introduction of NEET has made the admission process difficult for marginalised communities in Tamil Nadu,” he said.

UPSC releases notice for misleading information on social media

UPSC releases notice

UPSC has released an important notice regarding the misleading information in social media on operation of Reserve List. Some misleading information is circulating on social media with regard to operation of Reserve List in Civil Services Examinations, especially that of CSE, 2019.

“Some misleading information is circulating on social media with regard to operation of Reserve List in Civil Services Examinations, especially that of CSE, 2019. The following statement is being issued to mitigate the doubts which may arise in the minds of aspirants appearing/appeared in the examination,” read a communiqué issued by the UPSC on its official website- upsc.gov.in.

“First, it is essential to affirm that the Commission strictly goes by the Rules of Examination as notified by the Government of India through Gazette Notification for Civil Services Examination and all other examinations conducted by the commission while preparing results, stated the UPSC,” the notice read.

“For CSE, the Commission recommends candidates belonging to different categories for their appointments in different services. While declaring Main result (the result at first instance), the number of recommended candidates under General (unreserved) category is reduced by the total number of candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the Scheduled Tribes, the Other Backward Classes and the Economically Weaker Sections who acquire the merit at or above the general qualifying standard without availing any of the concession/relaxation either in eligibility or in selection criteria,” added the communiqué.

“The recommendation of the candidates in this manner as envisaged in the Rules of Examination is an established practice of giving fair treatment to the candidates of reserved categories since decades enabling them to choose a service of higher preference based on their reserved status. After exercise of the above option by the reserved category candidates, the resultant vacancies which arise due to the category movements, are filled up from the Reserve List, on a requisition received from the Government for each category including the General (unreserved) category,” the communiqué read.

“From the above stated process, it is clear that the Reserve List is not a waiting list. In fact, the Reserve list is necessitated in a multi-service examination to allow candidates of reserved categories to choose a service of higher preference who qualify at or above general qualifying standard without availing any concession/relaxation at any stage of the examination,” said the commission.

“It is also necessary to state that all candidates, who are recommended from the Reserve List, are placed en-bloc below the last recommended candidate in merit position in each category of the Main result of the examination,” added the UPSC commission.
