Two private schools in Ludhiana reopen for Class 12 students

In a huge development, after seven months two private schools in the Ludhiana affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reopened for students of board classes. However, it was mandatory for students to have written consent from their parents.

Both, DAV Public School, BRS Nagar and BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar reopened the schools for students of Class 12 with precautionary measures in place.

Students visiting the schools had to undergo thermal screening, oximeters were used to check oxygen saturation levels and regular hand sanitisation was ensured. Circles were marked at the entrance gate and in corridors so that social distancing is maintained.

Tripods and wi-fi facility has been provided to all teachers so that they can also conduct online classes simultaneously. Around twelve students were accommodated in every room and social distancing norms were followed.

Students look very excited about attending school after seven months. Around 150 students visited schools for doubt clearance with their parents’ consent. For the morning shift, students of Class 10 reported at 8.30 am; while Class 12 students reported at 11 am for the next shift.

Staff was deployed at the school’s entrance to check temperatures of students, hand sanitisation was ensured and students were asked to follow social-distancing norms.

Calcutta HC orders private schools to offer 20 pc reduction in fees

The Calcutta High Court has ordered 145 private schools in city to offer a minimum of 20 percent reduction in fees across the board. The court has also directed that the non-essential charges for using facilities that are not availed will not be permissible.

The parents of the students in the 145 schools around the city had earlier moved a petition in the High Court asking for a reduction in the school fees since only online classes are being conducted during the pandemic situation.

The High Court has further stated that there will be no increase in the fee during the 2020-21 financial year and from April 2020 until the month following the reopening of the schools, all the 145 schools will offer a minimum of 20 percent reduction in the fees across the board. The division bend also directed that the non-essential charges for the fasciitis like additional charges for the lab, craft, sports facilities, or extracurricular activities that are not being used currently will not be permissible during the months that the schools have remained closed.

One of the judges at the bench further stated that there are many parents who are diverting a substantial part of their resources to get their children admitted in high-schools with superior educational infrastructure and amenities.

A minimum of 20 percent reduction in the monthly tuition fee will be based on the tuition fee charged for the corresponding month in the previous financial year. The court has also stated that there will be no refund of fees that have been paid already.

AICTE, Microsoft join hands to skill next gen students

To empower students for future-ready, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has joined hands with Microsoft to provide uninterrupted online learning.

As part of the partnership, over 1,500 course modules from Microsoft will be made available to students and educators free of cost through AICTE’s e-learning portal ELIS.

Microsoft’s learning resource centre Microsoft Learn has been integrated with the ELIS platform to provide access to personalised learning paths and resources for students, covering a broad range of technologies including AI, IOT, data science and cloud computing among others.

Microsoft India President Anant Maheshwari said COVID-19 has accelerated the need for upskilling and shown clearly that the future of learning will be profoundly personalised and supported by technology.

“Our collaboration with AICTE reflects our commitment to building a strong skilling ecosystem in the country and ensure continuity in learning,” he said in a statement.

AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe said upskilling is very important to enhance employability opportunities for students.

“AICTE is happy to partner with Microsoft to help students get an opportunity to be hands-on with the latest technology and build products and services for the future,” he said.

Punjab Education Secretary lauds department for taking new initiatives

As a result, the change in public perception has visibly been witnessed. The public has started reposing faith in Govt. Schools, which is quite evident from the fact that an increase in enrollment of about 3.45 lakh students has been recorded, out of which more than 1.50 students have shifted from private schools.

Krishan Kumar said that the change in public perception is attributed to the augmentation of infrastructural facilities, quality education and the affectionate care being provided by the dedicated teachers. Now, the challenge before the department is to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of the parents, who have got their wards shifted from the private schools.

Technology at Mayo is ubiquitous, yet non-intrusive. The optical fibre layout set up in 2005 has enabled a campus wide internet. The Mayo Organic Farm, the Mayo Stable and the College Museum, already popular places of learning, are being further expanded to accommodate staggered attendance. Museology is the mainstay of Object Based Learning and we are further enriching our Museum Tool Kit. We are blessed to have a large museum of our own. We went into self-quarantine in early March this year, well before the first Lockdown was imposed. After the Boys left the Campus safely, we had an interstice of time to augment the skilling of Staff to deliver virtually. Our intensive training program held three years earlier facilitated a seamless transition to online teaching. Simultaneously, we opened up multiple channels for the parents to communicate with the School. The Class Masters, Subject Teachers and Pastoral Care Staff extensively communicated with the Parents to allay their apprehensions. We strengthened the House Tutorial System, organized various Co-curricular Activities and redesigned our Assessments to suit the need of the Virtual Platform.

Punjab to reopen schools for Class 9 to 12 students from Oct 15

In a major development, the Punjab State Government has given its nod to allow reopening of schools and coaching institutes for Class 9 to 12 students starting from 15th October 2020 onwards.

In line with the Unlock 5.0 guidelines of the Central Governments, Reopening of Schools will be done in a phased and graded manner. For now, the state government is planning to continue with the voluntary classes for school students and will not make attendance compulsory once the schools reopen. Moreover, students will be allowed to attend schools only with parental consent.

While school reopening has been allowed by the state Education Department, the state government has instructed schools to continue online classes for students. In fact, state government has asked schools to promote online classes and virtual education as the preferred mode of education for school students and encourage its wider adoption.

As part of the revised guidelines and SOPs issued to facilitate reopening of schools in the state, the state government is planning to only allow 20 students from each section to attend the in-person or face to face classes, so that adequate social distance can be maintained. Moreover, the state government has issued guidelines for School Reopening in Punjab and allowed partial 3-hour classes each day as part of the SOPs.

Delhi University: Over 19,000 students apply on first day

According to officials, the Delhi University received over 19,000 applications on the first day of its first completely-online admission process.

Principals of various colleges said the first day of the process was a learning curve for them and there were no technical glitches. The university had announced its first cut-off list on Saturday, with the Lady Shri Ram College pegging the cut-offs for three honours courses at 100 per cent.

Officials said they faced difficulties in verifying documents and it took time for them to get into the groove. As many as 19,086 aspirants applied for the 70,000 seats on offer for undergraduate courses. Out of these, 1,628 applications were approved, while 920 students have made the payment, according to university officials. The admission process is being held completely online this year amid the coronavirus pandemic and the university has advised students not to visit colleges in person.

Shobha Bagai, dean (admissions), said the admission process started at 10 am. She said there were admission branch officials, grievance redressal officials and nodal officers for each college to assist students in the admission process. The official said the guidelines to complete the admission process and calculate the best-of-four marks had been uploaded on the website and there was an online calculator to help students calculate whether their best-of-four marks meet the cut-off criteria of the respective college.
