The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has revised a chapter in its Class XII political science textbook to drop a paragraph on separatist politics in Jammu and Kashmir.

The NCERT has revised the chapter in the textbook “Politics in India since Independence” for the academic session 2020-21. While the topic “Separatism and Beyond” has been deleted from the chapter, the scrapping of Article 370, which gave the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir special status, has been included under the topic “Regional Aspirations”.

On August 5 last year, the Centre had scrapped the state’s special status and divided it into union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. “One strand of separatists who want a separate Kashmiri nation, independent of India and Pakistan.

The revised portion, where the chapter talks about Jammu and Kashmir, says, “Jammu and Kashmir had a special status under Article 370 of the Indian Constitution. However, in spite of it, the region witnessed violence, cross-border terrorism and political instability with internal and external ramifications”. “The Article resulted in the loss of many lives, including that of innocent civilians, security personnel and militants.

The revised textbook takes into account the developments that took place in Jammu and Kashmir from 2002 onward. Earlier this month, a controversy had erupted over the reduction of syllabus by the CBSE due to the COVID-19 situation, with the Opposition alleging that chapters on India’s democracy and plurality are being “dropped” to propagate a particular ideology.

Delhi University may allow admissions under ECA category

Delhi University

According to officials, Delhi University (DU) might revisit its decision to not have admissions under the Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA) category. This year, the varsity is not holding ECA trials, barring those having NCC and NSS certificates in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Several artistes like Birju Maharaj, Geeta Chandran had petitioned the vice-president, the chancellor of the varsity, to reconsider the decision. Naidu had asked DU authorities to retain the procedure for admission under the Extra-Curricular Activities quota by earmarking seats for talented artists.

A meeting of the Standing Committee on Admissions was held and a proposal was brought where it was said that the admissions should begin under the ECA category on the basis of certificates only by excluding trials. However, Arun Attree, a member of the standing committee, objected to it as there is no way of authenticating the credibility of the ECA certificates unlike sports as there is no government approved institutions issuing the certificates.

Attree said it is not only unfair to deserving candidates but also would lead to impersonation cases, sources said. According to officials, the varsity will revisit the guidelines after the approval of the higher authorities. “After the approval of the higher authorities we will revisit. The ECA admissions will happen only on the basis of ECA certificates. However, their verification is a big challenge. The sub-committee will give out stricter guidelines since the ECA trials won’t be possible. The chancellor had requested the vice-chancellor to reconsider the decisions,” said Shobha Bagai, dean (admissions), DU.
