With the increase in COVID-19 cases throughout India, the Government has imposed a total lockdown across India. As a result, disruption to the education industry has been unprecedented with school closures, suspended academic operations and inadequacy of platform to conduct online classes. This crisis has opened doors to virtual classroom that was earlier only limited to distance Learning courses. But this today is the need of the hour. Everyone is compelled to move towards remote teaching and learning models.

Speaking over the Corona pandemic during a webinar with Elets Technomedi and Digitallearning magazine Aditya Berlia, Co-Promoter, Apeejay Stya and Svran Group said “It’s a silver lining, for schools and educational institutions. As, in last three weeks most of the schools have adopted digitization. The education sector has to re-design its strategy. This is a one-year thing for the education sector.”

Taking about the placement issue, Berlia said “placements will be going to be an issue. The education industry must not emphasize on packages but on learning new things. Most of the people learn many new things during the crisis. We need to move from package and focus more on exposure.”

Berlia also emphasized that no students apply for courses launched by institutions which industry needs. It’s an industry failure. Students need to fill their skill gaps. There is a huge gap between what institutes offer, what students want, what industry wants and we need to solve this.

“There will be a huge boom in job creation industry in India post COVID-19 lockdown. But it will only come in certain skill sets. We need to change the mindset of parents and teachers for the new courses which institutes offer. In next one year, there will be a lot of jobs coming to India. Education institutes will do a great job after COVID-19 crisis”, said Berlia.

UP Board to declare results for 10th and 12th class in June

According to reports, UP Board 2020 10th and 12th class result will be declared in the first week of June. UP Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sinha confirmed that the UP Board High School and Intermediate result 2020 will be declared on the date mentioned.

Students can check their results on its official portal upresults.nic.in.

The declaration has brought great relief for students, who have been waiting for the results since February 2020.

Dinesh Sharma has said that owing to the current lockdown due to Coronavirus, the board has halted the evaluation process since 19th March 2020. He also confirmed that UPMSP has already worked out a plan to resume the evaluation work for UP Board 10th and 12th Board Exam 2020 as soon as the lockdown is lifted in the state.

Last week, a fake circular about UP Board’s decision to promote all the 10th and 12th Class Students without declaration of results went viral on different social media platforms. However, the board refuted the rumours clarifying that the board will resume the evaluation work for UP Board 10th and 12th Exam 2020 soon after the lockdown is lifted.

CBSE introduces three new skill development subjects

With an aim of including new age technology, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Board is set to bring in three new skill development subjects from its next academic year for class 11. The CBSE has added subjects including Physical Activity Trainer, Design Thinking, and Artificial Intelligence.

However, the CBSE until now offers around 10 skill electives for the students from the secondary level and 37 skill electives to the students at the Senior Secondary level.

CBS Director Training and skill Education – Biswajit aha said that with these skill development programmes, the CBSE aims to make a more creative, innovative and physically fit generation.

The three new skill development courses will encourage Critical Thinking and problem solving, develop training and life skills, and also simulation by machines of thinking capacity of humans within a student.

According to the notification, the CBSE has decided to extend the skill development courses for students from class 6 onwards. Although, the skill development programmes will be offered as a single 12-hour module for the class 6 to 8 students in order to help them in making informed decisions at the secondary and senior secondary levels.

The skill electives will help students to qualify to the secondary and senior secondary board examinations and if any students fail in any of the three elective subjects (Science, Maths and Social Science) in class 10 board examination then the marks will be replaced by the marks secured in the skill development subject attempted by the students as the 6th subject.

The results of the class 10 exams will then be computed as the best of 5 with skill elective subject. The same applies to the class 12 board exams.

It’s challenging to know at early stages when you are infected by the novel coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 disease. There is a most common and rare symptom loss of smell that could signal you must be tested. According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch, the virus could ultimately infect between 40% and 70% of the population worldwide. Some people might show no symptoms at all but many of those cases would be mild, while the prospect of being infected with a new virus can be devastating. The most symptoms are fever, coughing and shortness of breath. These symptoms usually appear between two days and two weeks of exposure to the virus. Doctors recently added “loss of smell” as a potential symptom that may show up alone without any other symptoms. As the coronavirus outbreak continues to accelerate globally creating serious worry among people.

As COVID-19 is an infectious disease and grows faster among the people coming in close contracts. Therefore, the social distancing and self-isolation have come out as the best methods to avoid the fast spread of the disease. Most of the countries adopted the methods of lock-down to avoid the community transmission to control the disease.

Even after all the protective measure the disease is still fast spreading globally and creating fear and worry in the entire world as till now there is no direct medicine to cure the decrease. Therefore keeping in mind the current situation it is recommended that each person should take proper care about himself and his family and stay at home to save lives.

As the coronavirus outbreak continues to accelerate in the U.S., cleaning supplies are disappearing off the shelves and people are worried about every subway rail, kitchen counter and toilet seat they touch. A new analysis found that the virus can remain viable in the air for up to 3 hours, on copper for up to 4 hours, on cardboard up to 24 hours and on plastic and stainless steel up to 72 hours. This study was originally published in the pre print database medRxiv on March 11, and now a revised version was published March 17 in The New England Journal of Medicine. What’s more, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was found on “a variety of surfaces” in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic people who were infected with COVID-19 on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, up to 17 days after the passengers disembarked, according to a new analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). However, this was before disinfection procedures took place and “data cannot be used to determine whether transmission occurred from contaminated surfaces,” according to the analysis. In other words, it’s not clear if the viral particles on these surfaces could have infected people. Another study published in February in The Journal of Hospital Infection analyzed several dozen previously published papers on human coronaviruses (other than the new coronavirus) to get a better idea of how long they can survive outside of the body.[2]

The new coronavirus spreads mostly through person-to-person contact within about a 6-foot (1.8 meters) radius, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). People with COVID-19, which is the disease caused by the coronavirus, spread viral droplets, particles through coughing and sneezing. The particles can land, on the face, in the mouth or nose of those nearby or by touching a surface where the virus has recently landed and then touching one’s mouth, nose or eyes. Fortunately, ethanol, hydrogen-peroxide or bleach-based cleaners are effective at killing those coronaviruses that do survive on surfaces. Unlike some extremely contagious pathogens, the virus is not thought to spread via smaller droplets that can remain airborne for long periods. In a study of the stool samples of those diagnosed with COVID-19 found that viral particles in those stools looked viable under a microscope. “This means that stool samples may contaminate hands, food, water, etc.,” the China CDC wrote in the report. For instance, if a person did not wash their hands after touching a surface contaminated with infected stool residue, there is a chance they could become infected if they touch their eyes, nose or mouth with their hands, Live Science previously reported. To avoid catching the new coronavirus, health officials recommend avoiding close contact with people who are sick. A face mask is not a substitute for staying home when you are sick, Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease specialist at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, recommends avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Frequent hand-washing — 20 seconds, with soap and water — and 60%-95% alcohol-based hand sanitizers can kill the virus.[3]

As per the Journal of the American Medical Association, as many as 98% of COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized had a fever, between 76% and 82% had a dry cough, and 11% to 44% reported exhaustion and fatigue. As per the current WHO ( World Health Organisation ) reports the coronavirus pandemic has killed more than 75,000 people worldwide, most of them in Europe and USA. Most affected nations have called for complete lockdown to stop spread of the deadly virus.

The WHO said on 25th March, 2020 that countries which have locked down their populations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus need to use the time to find and attack the virus.

With around 75,000 deaths globally, Italy is the most affected country with 16,523 and Spain 13341, USA 10871, France 8911, UK 5373, Iran 3739 and China 3331 deaths the country where the initial outbreak occurred. The United States has also seen the 10871 deaths but the highest number of infections crossing 4 Lakhs.

Coronavirus has now spread to over 205 countries across the world affecting billions of people. “Asking people to stay at home and shutting down population movement is buying time, and reducing pressure on health systems. On their own these measures won’t extinguish epidemics,” said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. [4]

Physicians work with state health departments and the CDC to determine who should be tested for the new virus. However, the CDC also recommends that people with COVID-19 or any respiratory illness monitor their symptoms carefully. If you become ill with the said symptoms and think you have been exposed to the virus, the CDC recommends calling your doctor first rather than traveling to a clinic worsening shortness of breath is reason to seek medical care, particularly for older individuals or people with underlying health conditions.

The disease appears to become more severe with age, with the 30- to 79-year-old age range predominating the detected cases in Wuhan, where the outbreak began, according to a study in JAMA. Children seem to be at less risk of suffering noticeable symptoms of the disease. However, a recent study of 2,000 children confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19 found that 6% developed severe or critical illness. The detailed study is published in the March 16 issue of the journal Paediatrics.

In more serious cases of COVID-19, patients experience pneumonia, which means their lungs begin to fill with pockets of pus or fluid. This leads to intense shortness of breath and painful coughing.

Govts in various countries have taken right decision to lock down. This is one of the best strategy to control the further spread of the Corona Virus. But the problem is that few people in general not observing it seriously and taking it casual. As per the rampant growth of Coronavirus and affecting the serious health issues around the world and in India the social distancing and self-isolation is the best strategy to save yourself from Covid-19.

Therefore, the entire individuals globally in general are required to take necessary precautions and take good care of themselves and their near and dear ones to ensure well-being of their families and the society in large.Humanity has overcome many difficult challenges and together we can overcome.

Lockdowns are now imposed in several countries. But the people are required to follow the lock down seriously and ensure the following to save themselves form the infection of Coronavirus (Covid-19) and get the real benefits and satisfy the real objectives of the lock-down.

Family should identify only one adult in a family for going out. Only he or she should go out. NOBODY ELSE.

•ONE dress: Use only one dress and same dress every time you go out. Use full-length dress. Don’t mix this dress with your other dresses.

•ONE wallet: Use only one wallet. Don’t mix these currency, coins and cards with other which already are there at home.

•ONE shopping bag: Use only one and same shopping bag every time.

•ONE vehicle: Use same vehicle and key. Avoid public transportation.

•ONE go: Avoid going out multiple times. Finish all your work in one go.

Avoid taking mobile phone or restrict using it.

Avoid crowding and come back immediately once you finish your work.

Use your non – dominant hand or elbow to open the door or push the buttons.

Once you come back: Keep your dress, wallet, bags, keys in a separate bag. Do not mix with others.

We must embrace the social distancing and self-isolation, always wash our hands, face thoroughly before touching anything and anyone, and always use N-95 Masks. Clean our mobile phone surface with sanitizer.

We must remember that we CAN’T AVOID exposure but definitely we CAN severely reduce its spread and impacts to avoid community transmission. As the community, transmission has the potential to create havoc globally. If we can avoid the community transmission, we can definitely save the world from the most difficult time of the last two centuries.

The education industry is another sector that has hit adversely in the current global scenario. But the sector has bounced back, thanks to the digital era. The current situation has led to the closing down of schools, universities, coaching institutes and other educational institutes following the spread of the Covid-19. This has further affected the students and aspirants preparing for their future. But as the educationists believe that learning should not stop, hence physical education has moved to the virtual world.

Speaking on the issue during a webinar with Elets Technomedia and Digitallearning magazine, Mr Navin Mittal, Commissioner of Technical Education, Telangana said, “ In the last few years, we are working towards adopting the digital technologies and market reform-oriented process in our education system. We have adopted many technologies in both higher education and administration. All our colleges are on e-offices. All the colleges dealing with higher education and technical education have adopted digitization in November 2018.”

Mr Mittal also said, “All the answer sheets are digitized. We are evaluating all the copies online. All the teachers get random papers to evaluate. We don’t have physical evaluating camps. We have huge data of students and which will help us in the future. We are using AI in evaluation. We found that this is a very useful process and it has a very great future. In the coming days, AI will be incorporated into our whole system. We are using online education in various universities.

“We are also developing online teaching for students in the state. We are starting 5 new online courses in the next academic year,” Mr Mittal also said.

“We are trying to develop many e-learning resources for faculty members and students which are available in the market. We have also asked our faculty members to use digital libraries. Many of them are trying new things in online teaching during the lockdown. We have also asked our faculty members to use online teaching platform for students. We are using the technology for employment for our students also” said Mr Mittal.

There are two major categories of students affected by corona lockdown during these days. The ones who are enrolled in study program and the ones who have applied for a new program of study. Given the extensive connectivity through internet, there is no need for a panic. The students enrolled in a program will be taken care of by the schools/colleges through online study, examination and assessment. In a way, given the inflow of assignments and tests and compulsory classroom attendance that students are subjected to today, it has come like a breather and a sigh of relief. For learning purposes, there are plenty of study courses and material provided by the government as well as the institutions in the country. For those who have applied for study in a new program within India or abroad, there has been a delay in the entrance tests as well as in the decisions of applications.

None of this should be a cause of worry for the students as it is a universal phenomenon and universities around the world are well aware and well-concerned for this cohort of students. Many Indian students had a dream of going abroad example to USA, Australia and Europe during next Fall, i.e. September 2020. But their admissions are either deferred to Spring, or converted for online classes. Foreign universities are having a tough time recruiting their own undergraduate and graduate students to fill up seats for Fall 2020 and are considering waiver of tests like SAT. Since student visas will not be issued until corona scare is cleared, international student admissions are not a priority for the foreign universities at this time due to uncertainty that exists for international travel, despite the assurance of heavy fees that comes from international students. The corona threat and precautions have forced universities to go completely online for the ongoing classes in USA and it all “depends” on how things shape up in the coming months. It is noteworthy that USA and Germany have recorded 3,67,758 and 1,03,375 of the total 1,348,628 confirmed cases of corona infected patients in the world.

For Indian students, it is summer break time, and those not yet admitted to foreign study programs, it is a blessing. They can choose from good Indian universities to pursue their studies for next year. For students who think that their dreams are shattered, it is time to re-think if they had misplaced dreams and assumptions that life can be good only when one goes abroad. India with a huge population has only 4,426 corona cases as of today and as compared to other countries, situation is much under control. Additionally, events like the COVID-19 crisis can help the students pause and reflect about what they would like to do with their lives and why ?

In the hectic schedules of current education system, students have found it hard to find time to do this otherwise. Students can also pursue their passion for reading, writing, music and other extra-curricular options. In a world that was increasingly characterized by intense competition, rat-race and materialistic pursuits, students should not think they have been left behind or harmed by this lockdown. Instead, such students have got more time to spend with their parents, to witness and reflect on the true nature, meaning and purpose of life, to develop a higher empathy towards humanity and to set their priorities right. The teachers at most of our institutions are enhancing their skill sets and enthusiastic to use technology as a part of everyday lessons. In many of our institutions, the teachers have been using Sway, Kahoot, One Note and Google Sheets to engage students and make learning fun.

I welcome the initiatives in the Draft National Education Policy for better engagement of the private sector. The proposed national research fund which aims to ensure provisioning for government funding for R&D work is another great initiative.

Impact of COVID 19 on Education

The COVID-19 pandemic, a health crisis has had a major impact on education globally. Many countries have taken the injunction of closing schools, colleges and universities. Both the teacher and the taught have embraced technology platforms be it Microsoft Teams,Google classrooms, ZOOM or other platforms for online learning. The chat forums and discussion boards simulate a classroom environment where students can actively participate in learning. This coupled with mails, uploading & downloading videos, tests & assignments will create a new skill set that will be much in demand in the times to come. The technology connect works well for imparting conceptual knowledge; but the practical sessions that require laboratory setting is not easy to replicate. One cannot dissect a frog or measure the frequency of sound in a remote setting. Many disciplines, especially in higher and professional education such as medicine, engineering and management to name a few, necessitatesome physicaland tangiblecomponents to imbibe skills and knowledge. It also requires the presence of a teacher who facilitates new thinking leading to new possibilities.

The pandemic has also spurred new solutions in the form of learning consortiums that include governments, universities, schools, academia and technology solution providers coming together to create solutions for the masses in the education sector. This is a boon for a country like ours where government has played a pivotal role in providing basic education. It can be a tend-setter for future of education.

But the road is long and fraught with challenges as the digital divide can widen the equality gap. Remote learning may seem as a silver lining as it promotes digitalization. But it is still a far-fetched thing for the Tier-2 and the Tier-3 strata of the society due to financial constraints, unreliable power supply and non ubiquitous internet connectivity. Also, one to one interaction cannot exhaustively be replaced via the impersonalized and patchy nature of remote learning.

The adjournment of board examinations of 10th and 12th standard students, the deferment of joining dates of internship programmes and the postponement of the new sessions have indeed reshaped the Indian Education system and has led to an insurmountable stress and anxiety for the students.Unfortunately, policy makers fail to realise that these interruptions are not just short term but can have a long-term consequences for the affected cohorts.

To sum up progressive institutions have been proactive and quick to Design, Deliver, Digitise and Discover. And it is certain to reshape the education.

BCECEB postpones exam over COVID-19 outbreak

Over the COVID-19 pandemic, Bihar Combined Engineering Competitive Examination Board (BCECEB) has postponed the examination. The board has also stated that BCECE 2020 admit card has also been delayed.

Earlier, BCECE 2020 exam was scheduled to be conducted on April 19 and 20 and admit card was supposed to be released on April 6.

A notification stated, “it is to inform to Bihar Combined Entrance Competitive Examination (BCECE)-2020 candidates, parents and all concerned that due to COVID-19 epidemic and lockdown situation, the proposed date of examination of BCECE-2020 i.e. 19.04.2020 and 20.04.2020 is hereby postponed till further notice. Accordingly, the date for issuance of Admit Cards for the examination which was to be issued from 06.04.2020 is here by also postponed.”

The notification also stated, “due to COVID-19 epidemic and lockdown situation, the proposed date of examination of BCECE-2020 i.e. 19.04.2020 and 20.04.2020 is hereby postponed till further notice. Accordingly, the date for issuance of Admit Cards for the examination which were to be issued from 06.04.2020 is here by also postponed.”

BCECEB had earlier extended the last date of registration from March 18 to March 24. The board had also postponed the examination date from April 12, 13 to April 19 and 20.
