Quarantine: An Opportunity For Experimental Learning

Vijayalaxmi Manerikar

With the outbreak of corona virus the world as a whole has been affected tremendously. COVID-19 has led the world locked. Everything has come to a hault.
Everywhere there are lockdowns of major cities. As we are no different, this pandemic has affected us too, to a large extent.

Fore seeing the conditions, our State Government had also declared quarantine holidays to all the schools since 16th March.

Maharashtra Chief Minister had requested people to abide by the Janata Curfew and subsequently ordered to impose Section 144 across the state from Monday to March 31. The current news is that our prime minister has declared additional 21 days nationwide locked down from today i. e. up to 15th April.

The effect of this pandemic on academics of the students can be minimised.

This quarantine time has made everyone sit at home under one roof and spend time together. If we think positively , we can utilise this quarantine time effectively for encouraging students’ interest in E-learning.

■ Steps implemented by us : Academic :

We all know, the annual exams of grade 1 to grade 8 have been cancelled as per the state government directive. To keep children connected with academics , we have taken the following measures :

▪ First and foremost , we have told our parents to take this situation as an opportunity instead of seeing it as a problem or hurdle in the path of their child’s life.

▪ All subject books/notebooks (course study material) have been given to students at home so that they can study at home.

▪ Question banks in the form of Google forms of all subjects have been sent to our respective parents for revision purposes so that they can take revision of their children at home without any difficulty.

▪ All our parents have been assured that all of our teachers will be available on phone if any difficulty arise in solving these revision questions.

▪ As far as students of Lower Grades are concerned, parents have been requested to take their reading and writing practice regularly so that their writing habit is not affected.

▪ We are going to evaluate these revisions each for 20 marks for lower grades and these marks will be considered as their performance of the year . Every student will get promoted to the next class despite the revision results , but these tests will provide us with a clearer view of who needs more attention in the next year.

▪ Teacher-Parents-Students online- groups have been created.

▪ Soft copies in word format or Google forms of home assignments/worksheets/revision sheets are being shared and collected online on daily basis.

■ Work from home challenge for teachers: Teachers are working in a stress free environment that is their home. Of course, for a few teachers their house workload has increased hence they are not
able to cope up. But most passionate and dedicated teachers have learned to excell their managerial skills to organise household responsibilities and school work from home.

▪ Online daily reporting has been regularised. It has become more effective, entertaining, time saving. It has enabled permanent documentation.

■ Parents’ Grooming time:

Home has become real sweet home for kids due to the long time presence of parents . Joint activities and parents’ interest in children’s studies are encouraged.

■ Online Academic and Co-curricular activities:

▪ Every day only one subject – online teaching by video conferencing for higher grade students.

▪ Creating small encouraging self made videos by teachers for their class students.

▪ Providing online guideline programme for one week home assignments.

■ Co-curricular online assignments: or online summer camp!

▪ Music – Students are encouraged to practice singing, dance routines and musical instruments that they have studied in school.

▪ Arts and Crafts activities are assigned to students such as – preparing home made masks, sanitizers, greeting cards, wall hangings, cut outs of teaching aids such as numbers, stories, alphabets (for
lower grades) etc.

▪ Drama – Students are asked to learn soliloquy, elocution, speeches, dialogues, story telling etc. They are encouraged to record videos and send them to the concerned teachers .

▪ Physical Education – Students are given a plan to perform daily yoga activities to keep themselves fresh and fit .

▪ Homemade Recipes : Students have even started learning home made recipes with their parents like cookies, chocolates, sandwiches, bhel etc.

We cannot really predict what situations we end up in but ultimately it depends on us to see whether a situation is a boon or curse!

We, the education sector , must treat this situation as a boon to have a completely new experimental experience. If we engage teachers, students and parents in the above mentioned creative academic activities, this time will pass happily and set a new record of school achievements. I encourage you all to take similar measures in your school and institutions.

Jyothsana Gururaj.S: Technology cannot replace teachers

Jyothsana Gururaj.S

As we entered the month of March 2020, Holi the festival of colours was celebrated with much joy and fervour by all students and with the syllabus being successfully completed; revision for II Semester exams were in full swing when we received the news of Covid -19 outbreak in Maharashtra and rest of the country. The Government as a precautionary measure decided to close the schools for students by ending our plans abruptly.

March-April is the exam season across India and shutting down during these crucial months can highly impact academic growth of the students. Parents were confused about how the revisions will go on and about the final exams. We assured them that we shall look for an alternative to keep the students occupied at home and learn simultaneously. I have told parents to take this as a positive sign and spend time with their children and help them in academics apart from other activities.

As the saying goes “Technology cannot replace teachers, but tech in hands of great teachers can be transformational.” We planned to send the revision and homework’s in the form of videos and pictures through WhatsApp. Our plan was successfully implemented by the teachers and this initiative was appreciated by all parents.

Our school has Pre-Primary section and Primary Section up to Std III for the Academic Session 2019-20. According to the Government directives final exams were cancelled but still our teachers are continuing to send daily fun activities including creative art and fun organised games and also activities related to academics so that children are in touch with the subjects and also to make them occupied in the social isolation period.

This also helps kids who are impatient & playful and need their daily dose of playing outdoors which is prohibited at the moment. I suggested the teachers to send the video messages to interact with the children to establish virtual bonding. The teachers learnt to design the activities and prepared videos to send to children. They were open to the suggestions and begun researching to find out different activities. Teachers are taking this situation in a positive manner.

Parents are also happily sharing the pictures and activities of the quality time spent with their children with us. We are posting the same on WhatsApp and Facebook page of our school to encourage parents and children to actively participate in this time of crisis.

This situation is not permanent but as an Educationist I say “Positivity Always Wins” and we educators together with students and parents hope that we shall overcome this crisis by abiding by the rules set by the Government and taking care of self and others.

HAPPY SOCIAL DISTANCING!!!

BVDU College tackling COVID-19 digitally: Dr Anand Bhalerao

Dr Anand Bhalerao

In the wake of COVID -19 pandemic which has shaken the entire world, the entire population is paralyzed due to the lockdown in order to avoid the spread of the virus. Industry and academia are amongst the mostly hit areas. The concept of “work from home” is most effective in such situations as it ensures productivity, in case of industry (especially for IT sector), but is also equally effective for academics. As the lectures and practical sessions cannot be conducted in the conventional manner, certain educational platforms like Edhitch are proving an effective method for instructing the students.

Though face to face classroom teaching is withheld, our faculties are continuing their job with more rigor and attention. For BVDU College of Engineering, excellence is the motto even in the adverse situation.

Measures taken at BVDUCOE, Pune:

Some essential measures are taken at the institute level are targeted to minimize the academic loss for the students without compromising the quality of teaching. At BVDUCOE, we are using following methods to ensure the same:

1.Lectures: Lectures are conducted and captured by the faculty members, at his/her residence using a high resolution video camera (almost every smartphone can be used), in the conventional manner using whiteboard.

Screen recorders are used to capture laptop/desktop, with voice over, for topics requiring PowerPoint presentations.

The high quality video files are not suitable for uploading directly to any distribution platform like Edhitch, WhatsApp Messenger (due to limited bandwidth at faculty residence), hence these videos are compressed to a compact video format like Matroska and then uploaded to Edhitch Resource panel/WhatsAppMessenger. Students are instructed to watch the videos and ask questions, if any, using the Discussion panel in Edhitch or WhatsApp group

2.Practical Sessions/ Experiments: Simulation demos (wherever possible) are also recorded and processed in the similar manner using screen capture tools and uploaded to Edhitch/WhatsApp Messenger.

Assignments: Assignments based on the topics discussed in lectures are uploaded to the Assignment Panel in Edhitch. Assignments cover, MCQ, quizzes and subjective questions. The students are expected to complete their assignments within a stipulated deadline.

3.Notes/ Lecture Material: Notes and PowerPoint slides in PDF format are made available to the students via Edhitch Resource panel.

Outcome of such AI-based programs helps in identifying the strong and weak points so that further corrective measures in every aspect can be taken for continuous student improvement. Though there are holidays but course is progressing as per the target lesson plan. Online activity in last two weeks has increased by 50%.

BVDU College of Engineering (Deemed University) Pune has been using Edhitch platform for last four years. Its machine learning based algorithms help us make the right decisions about student learning, course planning and placement of students at the right place based on their performance, skill and interest.

Digital learning is the only option in this hour of crisis.
