Resilience must be built into your educational system: Daljeet Singh, Principal, CT Public School, Jalandhar, Punjab

Daljeet Singh

With the world on lockdown and dealing with a global pandemic caused by COVID 19 and nearly all the nation’s schools closed, it has not stopped any of us from working round clock to arrange social services and stand up to some kind of distance learning program. In the light of this scenario, CT Public School has taken a holistic approach by shouldering the responsibility of empowering the students with knowledge and keeping them abreast with the latest syllabus by providing them a platform where they can be in touch with their teachers and mentors through online learning.

CTPS believes that during a closure, communication between administrators, staff, parents and students is more important than ever as everyone’s anxiety is high and channels of communication need to be frequent and clear. Therefore educators are strenuously working to identify more and more key practices for successful online learning by reorganizing the school schedule. Teachers are sending online learning material, notes, worksheets and practice assignments to the students in the morning whereby they have the afternoons to work independently and interact with their teachers.

In extreme circumstances like an impromptu closure, it’s tempting for the teachers to upload worksheets for students to complete and return. Efforts are being made to make these online classes as engaging as the classroom experience (if not more) so that the students do not suffer.

This online learning is planned in such a way that it should never be an excuse to assign busy work, but rather to address clear engaging learning objectives.

The children need time to adjust and cope up with the emergency caused due to this deadly virus. Therefore they are provided with manageable and achievable goals to work on each week. Teachers take their feedback and communicate with them frequently.

Keeping in mind that parents might either be working from home and unable to help much, lesson plans are designed in a manner that does not require a lot of support from parents. In fact, parents are also provided with guidance on how they can support their kids in online learning.

It’s similar to homeschooling, however, the biggest challenge is parents supervising what their kids are supposed to be doing and at what time. In this regard, parents are also guided.

One of the best things that CTPS has done to support parents is streamlining information by creating broadcast groups for all the assignments, schedules and expectations.

It may be a little harder for students to follow classroom assignments when you are not there face to face. So online instructions are kept short, simple and clear. Students and parents are urged to prepare testimonials. The staff is encouraged to work effectively from home and therefore teachers are also creating blogs and writing articles on various issues.

Children are encouraged to read books and newspapers and listen to the news. Helping our children become a reader is the most important thing that we can do to help the child to succeed in school-and in life. The importance of reading simply can’t be overstated. Reading helps children in all school subjects. More important, it is the key to lifelong learning.

CT Public School will not leave any stone unturned to bridge the gap and the adverse effects of coronavirus on education.

Dr. Pratima Sheorey, Director, SCMHRD, Pune: Balancing teaching need of the hour

Dr. Pratima Sheorey

The Covid 19 outbreak is the biggest disruptor in this century. In my opinion, it is 3rd World War only this time all nations are fighting against a virus. Every single person has been adversely impacted either directly or indirectly. There is a lot of analysis out there in terms of the impact of the Covid outbreak on various sectors and the steps being taken by various industry sectors to battle it.

At SCMHRD we took a slew of measures as a constituent of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) and also at our end to ensure that the students and staff were safe and also gainfully occupied.

First and foremost we urged the students to return to their hometowns/countries, if possible. Else the campus facilities were appropriately ramped up to deal with the students who would be left behind. The campus was also sanitised and deep cleaned to ensure safety. The students were also encouraged to travel light (in case they were traveling back home) and to leave their belongings in a cloakroom, which they could collect as and when possible for them.

The balance teaching was done via google meetups and zoom wherein the faculty and students were engaged in an online classroom. The feedback for these sessions from the faculty as well as the students has been very good. Since SCMHRD already does continuous assessment for all its courses, the same marks were used to give final grades for end semester exams that were cancelled on account of the Covid outbreak. In fact, Symbiosis was the first higher education institute to use continuous assessment grades for end semester exams.

Any backlogs were handled by giving students assignments in lieu of the exams and the submissions for the same were done in a time bound manner to ensure fairness and safety of the student. In addition, Skype and Whatsapp video calls were also used to ensure that the faculty understood the depth of preparation of the students by conducting a viva-voce.

On account of the nationwide lockdown and a fair degree of uncertainty surrounding when ‘normal’ activities would resume – a lot of companies have deferred, delayed or a few companies have cancelled summer internships. In a business school summer internships are needed to complete the degree and also secure placements. Students pay high fees because they have a fair degree of clarity in terms of the learning and their future career prospects. Summer internships have hit a roadblock on account of the Covid outbreak.

While some companies have already given project charters such that students can begin the secondary work. At SCMHRD we have assigned 15 students to one faculty member so that they can mentor the students for their summer internship. In light of the changed circumstances, the faculties are now also mentoring students to write one research paper in a Scopus or Web of Science indexed journal to ensure high-quality learning and researching continues. We already subscribe to many online databases and the access of the same has been enabled for the students to conduct research and connect with their faculty mentors via video calls, voice calls or emails etc.

The intention is to ensure that learning continues in a safe environment and the students are productively engaged in these uncertain times. In fact, we are also recharting our pathways given the new uncertain normal that is clearly the reality.

Dr. Suman Kumar Dawn, Professor & Principal, Calcutta Business School: calls for alternative strategy

Dr. Suman Kumar Dawn

Since the beginning of 2020, the world has been threatened with the fatal impact of COVID-19. Across the globe more than 190 countries are affected as of now. This new variant of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-;2) has put the society and economy at halt. Education sector is not an exceptional. As of 23 March 2020, over 1.3 billion learners were out of school due to school closures in response to COVID-19. According to UNESCO monitoring, over 100 countries have implemented nationwide closures, impacting over half of world’s student population.

With reference to the advisory provided by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) dated 13th March 2020 regarding the pandemic Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) the institution like Calcutta Business School (CBS) was requested to take necessary precautions in prevention/reduction of the transmission of the virus. In line with the requirement and call of the hour, CBS has taken few initiatives:

Firstly, CBS has put major emphasis on the well-being of its students and employees. CBS has distributed standard preventive masks to all students, teachers, staffs, security guards and housekeeping persons in the 1st week of March 2020 to prevent the spread of Corona Virus. The school has also given notices to all its stakeholders to take necessary preventive measures (in line with the guidelines given by the Central Govt. and State Govt.) to fight the deadly corona virus (COVID-19). CBS has circulated necessary information using digital media as well as printed documents among its stakeholders repeatedly with an intention to create awareness about personal hygiene. CBS has adopted a strict (zero tolerance) measure for keeping its students inside. Apart from some essential activities all other functions have been closed. Employees are instructed to work from home using the digital platform.

Secondly, CBS has taken alternative strategy to continue the educational process. CBS has always been focused on imparting quality education. In order to continue the academic delivery process, it has already circulated reading materials for the remaining classes among the students and arranged for one to one clarification sessions over the skype. Assignments are being distributed using the digital media. In this regard, assignments are designed to examine the understanding of the subjects by the students and their problem-solving skills. Situational analysis based tests are being conducted using the digital platform.

Thirdly, as the summer internships for the first year students and final placement of the outgoing batch are in the process, CBS is in continuous conversation with the recruiters for ensuring continuity. In this context, all correspondences are presently done by using the digital Media.

Finally, in order to ensure the continuity of the admission process for the upcoming batch, every activities are now being carried out using internet, telephonic calls, Whatsapp video chat and skype calls. Electronic exchange of documents are being adopted.

CBS cares for its students and employees and is keen to ensure the continuity of the education.

Sunir Nagi, Principal, Pallavi Model School, Telangana: Online learning can help students

Sunir Nagi

A jolt out of the blue, one fine morning, I saw news of a deadly virus which we named as covid-19 engulfed the entire world. There was no time to think about it and even discuss this as the internet was flooded with scores of messages and I didn’t know which one to believe. It was time for our school to re-open, teachers were busy decorating the class rooms getting ready to welcome the kids to the new academic session amongst rumours of school closure due to covid-19. We re-opened and had classes for four days and then the panic button was pressed, holidays were declared.

Now, I had to conduct emergency meetings with the staff to let learning continue for students from their home. Teachers were trained to take classes using Google classroom. We started using Studease App to upload worksheets, notes etc online to benefit students. During the first week we started by teaching core subjects and then I as a principal addressed the parents and talked with them about introduction of co-scholastic subjects too.

Students were delighted to be a part of fun classes we introduced dance, music, craft, best out of waste, art and yoga. In sports, we sent them videos and asked them to view the games and answer the questions sent along with the video. Life skills are very important part of our curriculum and hence work sheets based on these were also posted to students.

What worried me, are the students were able to understand through online classes. Hence, came the idea of introduction of online tests basically to check if the concepts taught were clear and how much the students were able to comprehend. But, I must say the cooperation from parents was immense they were delighted that the teachers were calling up ten students every day and talking to them not only regarding academics but giving them tips on why it’s important to be indoors and stay safe. Indeed Corona has taught me, we Indians are very strong and unitedly we can fight back against this it may definitely take time but we are coming together to coordinate and co-operate with our government.

Dr. Shruti Tiwari, Principal, Suresh Gyan Vihar University, Jaipur: Exploring new online tools for students

Dr. Shruti Tiwari

The horror story begins with a Chinese doctor who first warned his government of the coronavirus outbreak. He was ophthalmologist Li Wenliang, who had first shared suspicion of a Sars-like illness spreading in Wuhan (China) and died after he was infected by the coronavirus. Chinese scientists believe pangolins may have spread coronavirus from bats to humans after they found the genome sequence separated from endangered mammals 99 per cent identical to that from infected people. This virus is spreading in other countries and in India.

Then, a time reached to make everyone aware about it. On the day 8th February-2020 students and faculties of Gyan Vihar School of Education, Suresh Gyan Vihar University took an initiative to spread an awareness about coronavirus and preventive measures against coronavirus in the society people in slum areas of Jhalana Doongri in Jaipur (Rajasthan).all students got involved to learn the responsible behavior towards community work during their professional training with ardor. And then after a month all teaching-learning process and academics on campus has been suspended till further orders in India due to lockdown. So, on SGVU, Jaipur campus, digital technologies are on boom to keep managing day- today teaching-learning practices.

Academics in the University is running on MOODLE (LMS), GOOGLE Classrooms, DUO,Google Hangouts, YOUTUBES even experimenting with easy ways i.e. WhatsApp, androids for audio- video sessions and various chat-boxes. Management and administrators and faculties are conducting online meetings too on apps DUO and ZOOM cloud meetings. All faculties are also learning new technologies to take their classes. One good transformation is continuously observing while online teaching sessions that a curiosity towards the digitized mode as well as technological approach is developing in the students and teachers.

They are exploring new tools of online contents, online tools and online apps for teaching learning processes though various problems are also generated during its implementation since internet speed, hangings, buffering and many more. But, we are moving on to adapting the untold challenges. The implementation is meticulously planned for conducting the online sessions on LMS in the all departments of SGVU during this lockdown tenure by constructing 30 minutes class (content delivery) + 15 minutes quiz of 5 MCQ and 5 short type answers ( evaluation part) + 10 minute (discussion in chat-room/box). Internal evaluation part i.e.

weekly test and graded assignments are not hindered they are successfully conducted on each Monday as per the academic calendar. Students and teachers are encouraged to register themselves on NPTEL/ SWAYAM/ COURSERA/ HAWARD’S CASESTUDIES (SGVU login).

Various heads of departments are delivering awareness talks to take the precautions for stopping the spread of Corona-virus. Motivational talks for safety and well being of health and mind of individuals. University is donating various material to the community people and adapted village Gram-Kacholiya (Jaipur District) like sanitizers and masks and grocery items. So, I think it’s really a testing time for us and country, we the academicians have to take this challenge or crises as an opportunity to adopt digital technology for teaching more broadly.

Innovation in HR: SkillSoft Perspective

skillsoft

The coronavirus outbreak, is impacting all sectors – with companies in the best of interest of their workforce, extending ‘Working From Home’ (WFH), deferring official meetings; and moving to virtual office settings.

Like any other functional area – Sales, Marketing, Administration, Finance, etc. which are taken to remote locations with employees working from Home, the role of Human Resource – involving hiring, assessments, training, appraisals, etc cannot lose pace, hence companies are harnessing various technology tools and platforms to maintain continuity in their HR functions. .

I am enclosing below the quote from Mr. Krishna Prasad, Head HR – APAC – Skillsoft.

Hope you find the insights shared useful and will consider it for your story, if you are planning around impact of Coronavirus outbreak – how companies are working their way around restricted movement, yet trying to ensure continuity in business operations.

“Amidst the COVID-19 situation, Skillsoft’s talent acquisition function has taken a decision to conduct all interviews via WebEx and avoid in-person interviews for the safety of both candidates and our team members. This helps the candidates attend interviews from their home or any remote location. This decision was taken after consenting with the leadership and managerial teams whether they were ok to make hiring decisions over WebEx. The talent acquisition team can stay connected with the candidates through the entire interview by video calls and still can connect on a real-time basis with the candidates. This approach helped us get into a mode where there is no physical exposure between the candidate and interviewer. WebEx also gives us the ability to record these interviews (with candidate’s consent) so that we can audit how the interviews are going on. The usage of our online assessment test has been increased as part of the hiring process especially for the IT & Tech roles, to quickly filter and move candidates to the next level. As a proactive measure, we’re also continuously looking out for new ways to smoothly conduct the hiring process without any delay.” – said, Mr. Krishna Prasad, Head HR – APAC – Skillsoft

Dr Geetha Venkat

The COVID-19 Coronavirus contagion has led to large scale school closures in India and the rest of the world. While the students have an off from school, few of the respondents are excited to spend this time with friends and family, almost 35% of the students are bored at home during this break.

While numerous schools in the country have tied up with different platforms to offer online learning to students, our school follows the path however and introduces online learning to students and parents seeking assistance for their academic queries. Though, mylstone app which is introduced while taking the books for the academic year. We scheduled the syllabus with the dates for these holidays till 31/3/2020 n shared it in PTA What’s app group.

Seema Negi, Principal, Sanjeevani World School, Mumbai calls to use lockdown productively

Seema Negi, Principal, Sanjeevani World School, Mumbai

In the wake of one morning, all of a sudden, the morning wasn’t one of the usual rigmarole. Suddenly people were asked to cover their mouths, suddenly people were being made aware of hygiene, suddenly people were asked to stay indoors and suddenly the term ‘social distancing’ spoke to humanity loud and clear.

Mankind across the globe is facing a crisis; a catastrophe! From ‘panic-buying’, ‘work from home’ to ‘doomsday’ these are fears that have gripped many hearts across the hemispheres. Students are anxious about examinations, parents concerned about childrens’ academic progress and the biggest question causing havoc is “What will kids do at home all day?” While the working class is anxious about how to get going with ‘work from home’, businessmen entrepreneurs worried about how they would sustain their business, and not to forget the daily labourers, for provisions to make it through the day.

These have left many minds cause to think, have we as humans gone wrong somewhere? Has humanity failed? Have we as mankind lived lives erroneously and now we need to mend our ways? Vivid questions are many racing through hearts, right from a child to senior citizens. Amidst all the chaos, some feel, nothing could touch them, no disease could harm them, and no harm could befall them. Medical experts and government bodies have given safety guidelines to follow; yet these are the ‘thick-headed’, ‘know-it-all’ beings that go about doing everything they aren’t supposed to do, especially in dire times like these.

And then the day came we were separated from the lifeline of our school; our students, the school indeed looked lifeless, but we, Team Sanjeevani were determined to flip the situation and make it the most interesting one. It all started with change in the mindset and extraordinary support from the parent fraternity through PTA members. So, the work began and we decided to become clean slate to ULEARN, RELEARN, LEARN….the process is still going on.

The first challenge was uncertainty….will it be days, weeks or months we were not sure. The pertinent question was how can we take this current global situation into our stride and not let the learning get hampered? What we as educators need to do? The answer was very simple. Take the resources available to you and make good use out of it. It’s the world of technology, the world of digitalization. All across the globe, great institutes provide distance education through online and offline learning. Though, at first we tried we failed, we tried again and the wheel of learning and mastering the new skills started.

But for us apart from taking care of academics, keeping a check on the emotional quotient of our learners was important. We took to technological platforms, making use of all the resources available, like Google Classroom, Google Hangout, Zoom, shared presentations, videos to reach our learners; at the same time we ensured to make WE CONNECT videos, by class teachers for their students. We connect videos became students delight, we got overwhelming response from the parents, small children even kissed and hugged the screen, while the teacher was talking to them.  Feedback from parents made us realize it’s neither the white board nor the black board, but the teachers who can create magic.

Academically speaking, we’ve been putting up videos every alternate day, related to our curriculum to make sure that the time and opportunities we have don’t go to waste. In times like these we have to find a way out rather than sit around with nothing to do. This is also a great way for our students to learn about time management which will help them in their future endeavors. While curriculum is going on smoothly, but still our priority is the mental wellbeing of our children, we are trying to reach out to our students as much as we can.

Today, Coronavirus  dominates the news. India is under strict lockdown period. It has been classified as a pandemic. Extreme actions are being taken by the government to contain the spread of this disease. It has driven the stock market down. It’s now a political dialogue. It has affected commerce, entertainment, travel, sports and almost everything.

The current situation has definitely created panic. So what are some of the practical steps we need to take in the face of the current pandemic?

  1. We should be more diligent than usual about washing our hands, wiping them off with sanitizers and avoid touching faces after touching public facilities.
  2. We should minimize exposure to large crowds when practical.
  3. We may have to cut down on our entertainment activities, avoid/limit unnecessary travel.
  4. Carry on with normal lives; but simply need to use common sense.
  5. Medical experts have advised that we need to keep 3- feet distance from others when in public.
  6. Eat at home more than ordering from restaurants.
  7. If we experience flu-like symptoms, it’s advisable to consult a doctor.

Apart from these, there are two ‘P’s that are extremes to be avoided:

  1. Presumption: We need to act with prudence and not presumption. Presuming it won’t affect you, is somewhere a sign that pride is exercising in you. And pride leads to downfall. Therefore it is rightly said, “Better late than never; bettersafe than sick!”
  2. Panic: Panic is fear and fear is the absence of faith. Having faith in our medical experts, doctors including the government will in many ways take care of panic. Above all have faith in God. God has given each one of us a ‘spirit of boldness and not fear’.

So remember,

  1. Exercise prudence and common sense.
  2. Seek God.
  3. Trust in Faculties (Doctors, Government, and God).

Finally, in conclusion, I would like to add a simple yet profound analogy f life. The Moon has taught us that ‘It’s okay to go through phases’. And the Sun has taught us, ‘no matter how many times we go down, keep rising!’ With this I end it by saying, ‘We shall overcome!’

At the end, let me share what we got in return…it’s priceless and will be treasured for years to come and it will make us remember TOGETHER WE CAN.
