Identification mechanisms to be incorporated in degrees: UGC

In a bid to prevent the chances of replication of degrees, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed to all universities to incorporate the students photos and Aadhar numbers in degrees and certificates issued for higher education. The move is aimed at security and verification purposes.

This security feature aims to bring in uniformity and transparency in education system of the country.

Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Mahendra Nath Pandey revealed in the Lok Sabha that the UGC has requested all universities to inscribe the name of institution in which a student is enrolled for a programme to study as well as the mode of delivery (regular, part-time or distance).

He said it has been requested to all the universities to introduce such identification mechanisms, as mentioned in the UGC vide letter dated March 21, 2017.

In the recent past, the UGC also revealed the names of self-styled and fake institutions and universities operating in the country. And, with concern to such issues, the UGC took steps to maintain standards of higher education in the country.
