Jan E Alam, a 1991-batch IAS officer of Nagaland cadre, has been appointed as Chairman of the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Prior to his appointment at NIOS, Alam served as Joint Secretary in the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Human Resource Development.

Alam replaces S S Jena as the NIOS Chairman. Jena, who served as Chairman from September 2009, has been shifted as Director at the Regional Services Division of the Indira Gandhi National Open University IGNOU).

Jena served in this capacity before taking up his assignment at the NIOS.
