Indian Universities See Mixed Results in THE 2025 Rankings; IISc Bangalore Slips, IIT Indore Makes Strong Entry

THE 2025 Rankings

The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025 were released on October 9, 2024, offering insights into the performance of over 2,000 universities worldwide. Among Indian institutions, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore secured the top spot, being ranked in the 251-300 band. However, this marks a slight drop in its global standing, as IISc was previously placed in the 201-250 band in the 2024 rankings.

Several other Indian universities demonstrated notable improvements in their rankings. Anna University, Mahatma Gandhi University, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, all of which were positioned in the 501-600 band in 2024, climbed to the 401-500 band in 2025.

Another significant development is the inclusion of IIT Indore, which debuted this year by entering the 501-600 band, having not been ranked in 2024. Similarly, UPES exhibited remarkable progress, moving from the 801-1000 band last year to the 501-600 band in the 2025 rankings. Despite these advancements, no Indian university made it into the prestigious top 100 list of the global rankings.

JMI, AMU, BHU retain previous positions

Jamia Millia Islamia retained its place in the 501-600 band, maintaining its 2024 position. Meanwhile, Aligarh Muslim University and Banaras Hindu University remained steady in the 601-800 band this year.

Other Indian universities featured in the 601-800 band include BITS Pilani, Chitkara University, IIT Patna, IIIT Hyderabad, KIIT University, Lovely Professional University (LPU), Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Panjab University (PU), Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET), and VIT University.

On the global front, the University of Oxford claimed the top spot, securing Rank 1, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in second place and Harvard University in third.
