NTA plans AI-driven question paper creation to enhance exam security

National Testing Agency

The National Testing Agency (NTA) is exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in question paper setting as part of efforts to strengthen examination security and reduce the risk of paper leaks. The move comes amid increased scrutiny of exam processes following recent controversies surrounding high-stakes entrance examinations.

Speaking at an event on AI and Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), NTA Director General Abhishek Singh said the agency is working towards creating larger question banks and reducing human involvement in the paper-setting process. According to him, excessive dependence on human processes has been one of the key vulnerabilities in examination systems.

As part of its broader reforms, the NTA is reportedly considering a “zero-trust architecture” model, where subject experts contribute questions to a central repository without knowing which examination the questions will ultimately be used for. The agency is also exploring greater use of AI in translation and question bank management to enhance security and efficiency.

The initiative is aimed at improving the integrity of national-level examinations such as NEET, JEE, CUET, and UGC-NET, while leveraging technology to make assessment processes more secure and transparent.

The proposed AI-driven approach reflects the growing role of emerging technologies in modernizing India’s examination ecosystem and minimizing risks associated with human intervention in critical processes.
