fees

Providing relief to parents, Rajasthan government has ordered the CBSE Board affiliated private schools in the state to cut down their tuition fees by 30 per cent for classes 9 to 12. Also, the schools affiliated with the state board would have to reduce their fees by 40 per cent for the students of classes 9-12.

This came after CBSE reduced the tuition fee by 30 per cent due to a reduced syllabus for classes 9 to 12. Similarly, as the Rajasthan Board has reduced the syllabus by 40 per cent, the fee reduction would be by 40 per cent. As per the order, “ the CBSE reduced the school syllabus from Class 9 to 12 by 30 per cent, therefore their school tuition fees should be reduced by 30 per cent. At the same time, the Rajasthan Board has reduced the syllabus by 40 per cent, so they should reduce the fee by 40 per cent.”

Manish_Sisodia

All schools in Delhi will continue to be closed till further orders in view of the COVID-19 situation, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

Parents are not in favour of reopening schools either, Sisodia said at an online press conference. The Delhi government had earlier announced that schools will remain closed till October 31. “We keep getting feedback from parents that they are really concerned about whether it is safe to reopen schools. It is not. Wherever schools have reopened, COVID-19 cases among children have risen. So we have decided that as of now schools in the national capital will not reopen. They will continue to be closed till further orders,” Sisodia said.

Universities and schools across the country have been closed since March 16, when the Centre announced a countrywide classroom shutdown as part of measures to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. A nationwide lockdown was imposed on March 25. While several restrictions have been eased in different ‘unlock’ phases, educational institutions continue to remain closed.

According to ‘Unlock 5’ guidelines, states can take a call on reopening schools in phases. Several states have also begun the process of reopening schools. Earlier, schools were allowed to call students from Class 9 to 12 to school on voluntary basis from September 21. However, the Delhi government decided against it.

Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi suspended

Delhi University

On the orders of President Ram Nath Kovind, Delhi University Vice Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi was suspended. According to officials of the Ministry of Education (MoE), has also directed an inquiry against him over allegations of dereliction of duty.

The move comes amid a power tussle in the central university.

The President, who is the Visitor to the university, has placed Tyagi under suspension to ensure that the inquiry is fair and that he is not able to tamper with material records or coerce the witnesses, a senior ministry official said.

“All orders issued by or issued with the approval of Yogesh Tyagi during the period of his absence on medical ground are set aside and to be treated as null and void,” the official said.

Tyagi has been on leave since July 2 when he was admitted to AIIMS under emergency medical condition. The government had on July 17 given Pro-VC P C Joshi the charge of VC, until Tyagi resumes office.

A controversy erupted last week when Tyagi removed Joshi as pro-VC on Thursday and appointed Geeta Bhatt, the director of the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board of the university, in his place.

The ministry then intervened in the power tussle between the vice chancellor and the pro-vice chancellor, saying appointments made by Tyagi were not valid as he is on leave.

Delhi HC rejects plea for JEE Advanced re-exam for left out candidates

Delhi HC

The Delhi High Court has refused to interfere with the authorities’ decision not to hold re-examination of JEE (Advanced) for the candidates who could not attempt the entrance test due to their COVID-19 positive status.

Justice Jayant Nath said it is a settled legal position that normally, it would be wise and safe for the courts to leave the decisions of academic matters to experts who are more familiar with the problems they face than the courts generally. The high court dismissed a petition by an IIT aspirant, who had obtained a rank in the top 96,187 general category candidates in the JEE (Mains) examination held in September this year but could not sit for the JEE (Advanced) examination on September 27 as he tested COVID-19 positive on September 22.

The results were declared on October 5. He said he wrote to the Organising Chairman of IIT-Delhi, explaining his position and seeking accommodation/relaxation to another date for taking this examination. He also contacted the examination centre in Jaipur where he was informed that there were no arrangements for a COVID-19 positive student to appear in the examination.

The plea said the eligibility criteria for JEE (Advanced) is that a candidate can appear only two times in two consecutive years. Hence, he will lose a chance of getting admission into prestigious institutions like IITs. He pleaded that separate arrangements in the form of isolation centres for candidates who tested positive for COVID-19 should have been made and implemented at centres, as it was done in other examinations like CLAT 2020.

Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia visited the Rajkiya Pratibha Vikas Vidhyalaya in Paschim Vihar in west Delhi and congratulated the teachers and principal for their 27 students clearing JEE and NEET.

While five students from the school have got admission in Indian Institutes of Technology this year after securing high rank in the Joint Entrance Examination-Advanced, 22 students have cleared the medical entrance exam National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET).

“The best practices from this school should be adopted by other schools so that we can repeat and multiply this success. Every child of Delhi should get such exciting and valuable opportunities to enhance their talent and make the country proud. By learning from your best practices and approaches, we want to create more opportunities for children in all schools for a brighter future,” Sisodia said.

According to government officials, during the interaction with the deputy chief minister, the schoolteachers said that it was their conscious effort to change the perception among children that to succeed in JEE and NEET, one needs to enroll in expensive coaching.
