Navkis college of engineering eyes to create problem solvers

Dr. M.G. Venkatesh Murthy

In the future, we may engage industry experts from various domains such as M-space research organization, DRDO, LRDE etc. who can assist our students in building real projects based on their experience, says Dr. M.G. Venkatesh Murthy, Director Technical, Navkis College of Engineering, Hassan in an interview with Elets News Network (ENN).

What makes Navkis College of Engineering unique, especially considering the various options students have when it comes to engineering education?

Navkis College of Engineering aims to be a pioneer in nurturing engineers to be agile and knowledgeable creators and problem solvers. To achieve the vision, we are providing facilities to students beyond the university curriculum in the form of cocurricular facilities and clubs. Our workshops or research centres will encourage students to build models, working as well as simulation models, even by providing finances and aids from the institution. In the future, we may engage industry experts from various domains such as m-space research organization, DRDO, LRDE etc. who can assist our students in building real projects based on their experience.

What are steps Navkis is taking to make students future ready?

As claimed by the National Education policy 2020, I am also of the firm opinion that it is a game-changer, and if adopted, it will change the future of our nation at an accelerated pace. According to this, every student whether he/she is from a rural area or urban area will have a similar kind of education along with nutritious food and is allowed to learn in their native language during the first five years. As they go up in the learning ladder, students can specialize in one major field and along with it they can learn any subject of their interest from any field. With the implementation of the concept centralized education administration ( i.e. University or directorate of Education Departments) every institute will be responsible for deciding and educating the younger generation. The main challenges to achieving this goal are two-fold. One is how to finance this, and the second is a more responsible and learned board of administrators at each school level.

The NEP 2020 is seen as a game changer in education sector, if yes how it will bring new things and according to you what are the challenges for the implementation of the policy?

Undoubtedly, the dynamics of education has changed mainly due to the arrival as well as adaptation of newer methods of both teaching as well as learning methods due to technological revolution specifically in the domain of digital electronics. Apart from this, teachers and administrators at Navkis have realized that students of the present generation are highly smart, fast learners and their parents are more caring and have realized the importance of education. Teachers at Navkis are widely using computers, projectors and other electronic devices to teach classes online and internet facility along with soft wares such as Upswing Classroom to conduct off-line classes. Also, teachers at Navkis have proficiency in handling all modern digital teaching aids and efficient enough to learn newer procedures.

Delhi govt urges CBSE to reduce syllabus and postpone exams till May

Delhi govt urges CBSE

In a major development, Delhi Government has written a letter to the Central Board of Secondary Education, (CBSE) urging it to postpone the March 2021 Board Examinations to May. The state government has also asked the board to consider reducing the CBSE 10th 12th Board Exam 2021 syllabus further.

Schools in India have remained closed for nearly 7 months in this academic year. While the Central Government has now permitted the reopening of schools, states have decided to defer it. Many states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Odisha, etc. have decided to keep the schools closed, even for students of classes 9 to 12 till at least October 31.

With the schools closed, the Delhi Governments (where most schools are affiliated to CBSE) has written a letter, asking for more time before the Board Examinations are conducted. Delhi, too, has decided to keep the schools closed till October 31.

“Though online, semi-online teaching learning activities are being conducted through live classes as well as worksheets or activity sheets but it cannot replace the physical classroom teaching learning process,” the DoE said in the letter.

CBSE Board Exams for classes 10 and 12 are conducted in the month of February to April. The board had revised the dates from 2019, to begin the Board Exams from February 15 instead of its customary March 1 dates. This year, however, there are wide speculations that the Board Exams may be pushed to May, to compensate for the closure of schools in the country since March 2020.

Two private schools in Ludhiana reopen for Class 12 students

private school

In a huge development, after seven months two private schools in the Ludhiana affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) reopened for students of board classes. However, it was mandatory for students to have written consent from their parents.

Both, DAV Public School, BRS Nagar and BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar reopened the schools for students of Class 12 with precautionary measures in place.

Students visiting the schools had to undergo thermal screening, oximeters were used to check oxygen saturation levels and regular hand sanitisation was ensured. Circles were marked at the entrance gate and in corridors so that social distancing is maintained.

Tripods and wi-fi facility has been provided to all teachers so that they can also conduct online classes simultaneously. Around twelve students were accommodated in every room and social distancing norms were followed.

Students look very excited about attending school after seven months. Around 150 students visited schools for doubt clearance with their parents’ consent. For the morning shift, students of Class 10 reported at 8.30 am; while Class 12 students reported at 11 am for the next shift.

Staff was deployed at the school’s entrance to check temperatures of students, hand sanitisation was ensured and students were asked to follow social-distancing norms.

We are proud to say that we have our own curriculum which preserves and maintains the natural state of inquiry and it is termed Geekay Integrated Primary Programme (GIPP) which centers on the maxim of ‘Inquiry’. This is adopted in both Pre-Primary and Primary. Moving further, the Integrated Middle School Programme (IMSP) at Middle School enlivens the experiential part of learning focusing on the element of the inter-disciplinary approach. The hands-on experience and activity-based learning from Pre-Primary till Middle School prepare our students towards the higher level of Bloom’s Taxonomy – Analyze, Evaluate and Create. Our Curriculum also paves way for strong communication skills since we firmly believe that learning takes place the best when they communicate with each other, in a productive manner.

The flexibility to choose the curriculum when they reach secondary school makes them great decision-makers in life. Informed Choices always form a part of the stream selection when the school provides them chances for both national and international curriculum choices, at secondary.

Beyond Curriculum

TGWS believes in going beyond academics to achieve the holistic development of each Geekain and this is achieved through the specifically designed Sports Curriculum, Performing and Visual arts which complement the all-round development of body, mind and soul.

Meanwhile, Leadership Curriculum at school, makes us unique and different again. ‘Leadership is more of an action, than a position’ is the ideal behind the Life through Leadership project at The Geekay World School and it occupies the center of the curriculum. The project aims to create a transformed leader who has discovered his/her self in the true sense through experiencing the real experience of adventure, facing challenges and overcoming obstacles through a fine blend of risk-taking and virtue management based on a set goal. Mayo College – Agile and responsive to new circumstances

LT. Gen. Surendra Kulkarni (Retd)

Mayo College was established in 1875 to provide holistic education to its students. This is a notion that resonates through the NEP of 2020. A balanced preparation of the mind, body and soul, underpinned by a solid foundation of cultural values has been the hallmark of our education model. Agility and responsiveness to changing circumstances have enabled us to remain relevant and contemporar.

We take pride in our vast, verdant, functional and sustainable 187 acre Campus that weleverage as a Classroom. At Mayo, each student designs his own private, individual and personalized learning space. Our Campus is flexible, fluid, adaptable and dynamic. We realized that learning cannot be fettered or structured by formal environs and therefore made it happen elsewhere and everywhere. It is here that we integrate various disciplines and have an unstructured and unorthodox look at learning. The Campus, for us, is a living, breathing entity that blends with the need of our learner and lends itself to the new hybrid approach for both synchronous and asynchronous transactions.

A comprehensive, intensive and rigorous safety and security protocol is in place which has been further bolstered with practice and precision. We are redesigning health and hygiene protocols in light of the recent developments. The maintenance and pending construction has been taken up with an eye on art and aesthetics. The Amphitheatre which seats 2000 persons, and an Art Gallery soon, complements the historic Bikaner Pavilion. The upcoming AI Lab and the experimental learning space will add to the skills development area which offers hands on learning from woodwork to 3D printing.

Also read: B-Schools: Preparing Students for a Tech-Driven Industry

Technology at Mayo is ubiquitous, yet non-intrusive. The optical fibre layout set up in 2005 has enabled a campus wide internet. The Mayo Organic Farm, the Mayo Stable and the College Museum, already popular places of learning, are being further expanded to accommodate staggered attendance. Museology is the mainstay of Object Based Learning and we are further enriching our Museum Tool Kit. We are blessed to have a large museum of our own. The Mayo Lake is a popular place for Boys, both for learning and recreation, not to mention the sporadic water Bodies in our 9 – Hole Golf Course.

We went into self-quarantine in early March this year, well before the first Lockdown was imposed. After the Boys left the Campus safely, we had an interstice of time to augment the skilling of Staff to deliver virtually. Our intensive training program held three years earlier facilitated a seamless transition to online teaching. Simultaneously, we opened up multiple channels for the parents to communicate with the School. The Class Masters, Subject Teachers and Pastoral Care Staff extensively communicated with the Parents to allay their apprehensions. We strengthened the House Tutorial System, organized various Co-curricular Activities and redesigned our Assessments to suit the need of the Virtual Platform.

The pedagogy at Mayo is indigenous and therefore requires inclusive and integrated infrastructure. It is an apt amalgamation of the teacher, technology, campus, and at the core of it all, our boys. The rest are peripheral to catalyse a seamless learning experience. The blend of various disciplines needs a dynamic time-table which might appear chaotic to the uninitiated. For us, it is learning at its best. It is here that the Boys need elbow space which we have no dearth of.

The Music School, the Art School and the Technical Skill Development Centre and other amenities have all gone Virtual. At Mayo, Boys design a covert niche to live, learn and grow – a place they can call their second home.

Mayo College remains future ready by leveraging tradition and technology to give maximum pedagogical autonomy to our faculty, the bedrock of our diffused leadership model.
