“Fill teachers’ posts under Maratha quota on ad hoc basis”

classroomThe Maharashtra government has been directed by the Bombay High Court to fill on ad hoc basis the vacancies for the post of teachers and professors in colleges and educational institutions, which were reserved under the 16 percent quota for Marathas.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Mohit Shah and Justice GS Kulkarni questioned why the posts were lying vacant despite the court staying implementation of the 16 per cent reservation to Marathas.

It may be mentioned that in November 2014, the high court had stayed implementation of the controversial decision of the erstwhile Congress-NCP government to provide 16 percent reservation to Marathas in government jobs and educational institutions. The bench was hearing a bunch of public interest litigations filed soon after the decision was taken by the government.

“When we have stayed implementation of the reservation, then why are the posts not filled up yet? Fill up the posts and employ people on 11-month contract period or till the petitions are heard and disposed of finally (whichever comes earlier),” the court directed.

Fake Degrees: Rajasthan Govt may dissolve Jodhpur univ

fake-degree-2-420x252After the Jodhpur National University allotted 25,003 fake degrees, Rajasthan government has said that it might consider dissolving the university following a high-level committee’s report on the irregularities there.

“The distribution of fake degrees is presently being probed by the Special Operations Group (SOG) even as the department has set up a high-level committee to probe the irregularities. The committee is expected to submit its report and depending on the recommendation, the state government will decide whether to dissolve the institute or to appoint an administrator,” said Higher education minister Kalicharan Saraf, adding that the State government will not remain a mute spectator to the irregularities at the university.

Senior BJP legislator Ghanshyam Tiwari raised the query regarding action against the institute and probe in the fake degrees scam, who called to dissolve the institute to `bring the shutters down of these shops’. Replying to the starred questions, the minister said the SOG had investigated 38,000 degrees which were issued by the university, of which, 25,003 were found to be fake.

Furthermore, Saraf said that SOG in its probe had found the involvement of vice-chancellor Kamal Mehta and other functionaries of the University. “As per the SOG, the degrees were allegedly issued to students without them having to appear in any examination or attend classes, in exchange for money,” he said, adding that while the counsellors of the university were arrested, decision on action against those who had bought the degree might be taken after the probe is over. He also informed the House that the Sodhani Committee was formed by the government on February 26, 2015 and its term was extended by two months in March.

Career options in medical education

Nilufer Jain, co-Founder EduCat, an education consultancy for study abroad in medical studies throws light on career options for medical stream students.

medicalIn India, medical aspirants mostly dread not clearing the All India Pre Medical Test, because that usually defines,if they are going to look at medical studies or not. However, there lies in a bigger problem once MBBS is over:the issue of choosing a specialization, which is going to make them the ‘NareshTrehan’ of their field.

Choosing a career in medicine is as difficult as the training one has to undergo for it.This is because choosing a specialty involves a highly dynamic and a complex decision making process involving mental dexterity and a tenacious effort that will be shaping and ultimately affecting one’s career.

Hence,it is imperative that a thorough and intensive research is undertaken before choosing the career pathway of medical studies as well as correct guidance is sought from competent medical bodies during the undergraduate years in medicine.

Guidelines on choosinga Specialization

Some of the most pertinent questions that one should ask themselves while researching and considering the various fields/specializations are:

Nature of the Work-?This question stems from the area of specialization you are looking at under-?Preventive,diagnostic,treatment/cure.It deals with questions such as what systems, diseases and patients you will be treating, working with manifold verticals or singular specialized units, shift patterns, ethical aspects of the specialization, etc.

Academics and Training–Once a particular field or a few options have been narrowed down, the training part plays an important consideration factor. Training and skill set matching, duration of training, levels of academic years and clinical experience required for successful career growth, competitiveness in the field, pay scales in the field.

Work Environment-?This question attributes to the Human Resource aspect of the hospital framework namely consultants, general physicians, allied healthcare professionals, who you will be working with more. This is an important consideration as this defines your work relationships in and around your career which can either augment or impede professional growth.

Market Trends–Depending upon the geographical region, growth of healthcare industry, and advancement of technology as well as diseases pattern different specializations in medicine are more lucrative over others. For example,In India, besides surgical fields, radiology and pathology are extremely lucrative fields.Whereas in the US,orthopedics surgery and cardiology(invasive and non invasive) occupy the top 3 medical specialties that are also the best paid amongst the others. Thus, one needs to evaluate the growth and changes in technology in the specialization and its anticipated demand as well as longevity of the demand in future.

Exploring Medical Careers Abroad

When looking at pursuing medical careers abroad it is important to understand the entry requirements of medical practitioners in that country, the academic and training qualifications required, the medical licensure examinations one needs to clear, the level of difficulty in clearing the licensure examinations, clearances from the various medical councils, the years of clinical experience as well as clinical skills required, visa criteria and fulfillment of those, specialty most sought after and open to international medical foreign graduates, pay scale in the particular specialty one belongs to, quality of work life available at the hospital/private healthcare unit one wants to work in, etc. the list goes on.

According to a research conducted by an American physician recruiting firm Merritt Hawkins and Associates on the medical specialties being the highest paid in the field, Orthopedic Surgery topped the list with an average annual package of US $ 464, 500.

Other specialties included – Cardiology (invasive and non invasive), Gastroenterology, Urology, Hematology, Oncology, Dermatology, Radiology, Pulmonology and General Surgery. The same were equally well paid in the UK.

However the lowest 10 specialties included – HIV/ Infectious diseases, pediatrics, family medicine, endocrinology, internal medicine, psychiatry, rheumatology, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology and pathology.

Where as in Australia Obstetricians, Gynecologists and intensive care specialists were also amongst the big earners as per an online journal published by an Australian research firm MJA insight.

Australian tax office figures on analyzing the tax collections of 2010-?2011 of medical specialists found that besides surgeons who took a whopping figure of AUS $ 350,383, followed by anesthetists who earned on an average AUS $ 335, 940 annually, clearly making the cliché ‘ROAD to happiness – Radiology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology and Dermatology, sounding home.

Family Medicine in Canada however, as per Specialties and subspecialties that have been endorsed by provincial ministries of health to receive a Statement of Need in 2015, as published by the Health Canada, a government repository has received significant prevalence.

The main reasons for these specialties to be in top most demand in most western countries is because greater experience, less complex patients, college fellowship, more time spent in clinical work and working in regional areas were all factors that increased income.

Plan to make namma IIT numero uno

India Institute of TechnologyEminent intellectuals, engineers and former IIT professors from the state came under one roof with a strong plan to make namma IIT in Karnataka the best institute among the country’s 23 branches.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘IIT Karnataka – optimal location and guidelines towards making it world class,’ organized by the Institution of Engineers, SS Murthy, former professor of IIT-Delhi suggested that the IIT should be established at a location that offers a cosmopolitan ambience to attract students from different parts of the country, and one that’s within a two-hour drive from an international airport. “If we don’t establish the IIT in such a place, then there’ll be interference from babus (politicians) wanting to help locals get jobs in the institution.”

He pointed out that 11 IITs are situated in state capitals and five others are located close to them. The remaining are suffering, he added. With a huge demand from across districts wanting to house the prestigious institution, Murthy suggested that the government establish one main IIT in one city and two sub-centers at other places. “This concept is followed in US universities; Uttar Pradesh itself has two IITs,” said Murthy. BVA Rao, former professor, IIT-Madras, said ever since their establishment in 1950, none of the IITs has managed to attract foreign students.

“India among world’s top 5 MBA destinations”It is an important development for management schools across India, as the country is ranked among the top five preferred study destinations worldwide, ahead of countries such as Hong Kong, Germany, Singapore, Netherlands and Australia.

According to the study by Graduate Management Admission Council which conducts the GMAT for admission to 6,100 graduate business and management programs worldwide, rankings don’t feature in top five consideration criteria for actually selecting a program and a study destination. The study revealed that during the decision making process for selection of B-school criteria, quality of faculty, job placement, programme type and fee structure matter more than the rankings for aspiring management graduates.

The number of B-school aspirants seeking to study outside their country of citizenship has increased from 40% in 2010 to 52%. India features among the top five destinations, while the leader’s (the US), popularity decreased from 73% of prospective students in 2010 to 66% in 2014. Two-thirds (66%) of prospective students across the globe, however, still prefer the US, followed by the UK (6%), Canada (5%), France (3%), India (3%), Hong Kong (2%), Germany (2%), Singapore (2%), Netherlands (2%) and Australia (1%).
