Manipal College of Dental Sciences tops in research in India

Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS) has topped the list of Indian colleges submitting research papers on dental sciences as per a survey report published by National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies,. MCODS submitted 166 research papers over 10 years. The report titled – Mapping of Dental Science Research in India was published by Har Kaur and B M Gupta, of National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies. Commenting on the way forward, Dr. Sobha Tandon, Dean, MCODS, says,'This year we are concentrating on research and international collaborations and we have taken steps towards the same by signing MoU with University of Southern California, USA and Queen's Mary University, London. We have recently completed a World Health Organisation sponsored project and we also have an ongoing project in collaboration with Colgate Palmolive Pvt. Ltd. Piscataway, New Jersey, USA. Our focus is also to publish minimum 3-5 papers/year in high impact factor journals, by each specialty of dentistry in our institution.'

As per the report, India holds 14th rank (18th in 1999) among the top 20 productive countries of the world in dental sciences and has a share of 1.66%, as computed from cumulative world publications output data for 1999-2008. India's publication output was at 1380 research papers during 1999-2008 (25 top colleges have been considered here) and MCODS topped the list by contributing 166 papers. Meenakshi Ammal Dental College and Hospital submitted 138 papers; All India Institute of Medical Sciences is at place 3 with 70 papers submitted.There are 3 more colleges from Karnataka, who fall in the top 10 category, they are College of Dental Sciences Davangere which has submitted 53 papers; A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences- Mangalore has submitted 36 papers, and Babuji Dental College & Hospital, Davengere has submitted 34 papers. Manipal Education has always laid great emphasis on research; in fact research is considered an integral part of the curriculum. MCODS, established in the year 1965, has grown over the years and has received many recognitions and accreditations internationally.
