In a major development, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to revise the course duration for MCA programmes. The AICTE has decided to change its exiting period of 3 years to 2 years. The revised course duration for Master of Computer Application (MCA) will be applicable from Academic Session 2020-21. In addition to this, to outline the details of the decision, the council has also released a detailed notification on its website aicte-india.org.
The demand for reducing the course period MCA programmes to 2 years from its current 3 year period, has been a long pending demand on the part of students as well as educational institutions.
The issue has been raised and discussed multiple times in the AICTE forum as well as escalated to UGC to make MCA a two year programme, at par with other master’s degree programmes on offer in the country.
In December last year, UGC approved the proposal for reducing the duration of the programme to two years. In line with that, the AICTE has decided to implement the revised duration for MCA programme from the coming academic year onwards.
AICTE has also issued revised eligibility criteria for the MCA programmes offered by technical institutes operating across the country.
According to the current guidelines, candidates need to clear BCA or possess a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science Engineering or pass BSc./ B.Com./ B.A. with Mathematics at 10+2 level; in order to be eligible to join an MCA programme.
