Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan told Lok Sabha today, there are currently 493 faculty positions open at the Indian Institutes of Management and 4502 faculty positions open at the Indian Institutes of Technology.
The Union Minister was responding to a question from Tamil Nadu MP D Ravikumar regarding the fact that more than 33% of the country’s sanctioned teaching positions are empty, which has an impact on educational quality.
“Out of 18956 sanctioned teaching posts at 45 Central Universities in normal way under the purview of Ministry of Education, 12776 posts are filled up and 6180 posts are vacant as on December 1,” said Pradhan in response to a question from the house.
He added that the ministry has ordered all higher education institutions to fill open positions quickly. A monthly monitoring system has also been established by the ministry.
In Central Universities, there are 1529 openings for the position of professor, 2304 for associate professor, and 2347 for assistant professor.
The education minister replied that under the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Teachers Cadre) Act, 2019, reservation is applicable in all HEIs with the exception of the institutions listed in the schedule and a few other exceptions as stated in the act when asked about steps the government has taken to fill teaching vacancies in various Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs), including backlog vacancies intended for SCs in teaching posts.
The Act stipulates that all positions requiring direct teacher recruitment in central educational institutions are subject to reservation. Additionally, no reserved position can be released.
