Schools to identify mental health problems in students; NCERT issues guidelines

NCERT issues guidelines

The guidelines for “Early identification and intervention for mental health problems in school-going children and adolescents” have been released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) following a mental health survey among school children.

Setting up a mental health advisory panel, school-based mental health programme, and pedagogical support to ensure the mental well-being of students and engaging parents are among the guidelines issued by NCERT for schools.

According to the survey reports, results and peer pressure are among the major factors for stress and anxiety among school students.

The guidelines read, “Schools generally are seen as spaces where communities of learners have been expected to develop in a safe and secure environment. School management, principal, teachers, other staff, and students all spend around 1/3 of a day and around 220 days in a year in schools across the states and UTs in India. For residential schools, the time spent by a student in the school community is even more. Therefore, it is the school’s responsibility to ensure the safety, security, health, and well-being of all children in schools and hostels.”

According to the manual, every school or group of schools should establish a mental health advisory panel. It said, “It should be chaired by the principal and have teachers, parents, students and alumni as members. It will create awareness, and also plan and enforce an age and gender appropriate annual school mental health programme. The schools should have a provision for identifying behaviour, substance use and self-harm, depression, and developmental concerns, provide first aid and make appropriate referrals.”

NCERT has recommended that apart from families and parents, teachers need to be informed about early flag signs as they too are the primary caregivers, Noting that most of the time mental health issues emerge at an early stage of life as half of all mental health conditions emerge by the time individuals are 14 years old and three-quarters by the age of 25.

It said”Teachers must be trained in identifying early signs in students for attachment issues, separation anxiety, school refusal, communication issues, anxiety patterns, depressive states, conduct-related issues, excessive internet use, hyperactivity, intellectual disability, and learning disabilities.

The manual further said, “Teachers should talk about bullying cases in class and empower students by educating them regarding bullying. They should provide a confidential way for students to report any incident which is of concern to them.”

The cabinet minister said that the objective of starting pre-primary schooling is to prepare children (3 to 6 years) for primary classes besides ensuring their all-around development. He said that under the curriculum prepared by the school education department for these classes, activities are to be conducted for the children through the game method. Learning support materials along with report cards have been sent to the schools. The purpose of filling the report card is to ascertain and understand the child’s development, he added.

DU to use AWS Cloud to enable adoption of Samarth eGov in HEIs

University of Delhi

University of Delhi (DU) is using AWS Cloud to enable the adoption of Samarth eGov — an open source automation e-governance platform across India’s universities and higher education institutions (HEIs). It aims to digitise 500 HEIs by next year.

The next phase of Samarth eGov’s adoption is expected to reach more than 500 HEIs by 2023. Samarth eGov has already been adopted by more than 200 universities and HEIs in India, including more than 40 central and state universities, and more than 100 colleges.

Samarth eGov is developed as an open-source, highly flexible, interconnected, secure, and scalable platform, delivered on a software-as-a-service model with a cloud-first approach on AWS, said Professor Sanjeev Singh, Joint Director, University of Delhi South Campus.

“It can address the diverse and evolving demands of universities and higher education institutions across India, irrespective of the state they belong to or the language they choose to interface with,” Singh further added.

Samarth eGov leverages AWS services to process more than 7.6 million student admission applications, handle more than 600,000 faculty and staff recruitment applications, and manage more than 7.5 million student records nationwide.

The suite provides universities and HEIs with an automation engine to migrate from paper-based and traditional third-party enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to a more reliable, secure, and scalable platform that standardises and automates digital processes and workflows.

Rahul Sharma, Regional Head, Public Sector AISPL, AWS India and South Asia said, “We congratulate the University of Delhi for embarking on and implementing Samarth eGov, a pioneering initiative in India’s higher education sector, and addressing common challenges faced by education institutions.”

With Samarth eGov, students could easily access basic information on courses, selection criteria, registration, admission, and fee payments online. The Cloud company said, “Education institutions can also enhance student outcomes by automating processes like managing teaching schedules and freeing up educators’ time to focus on teaching activities, such as providing personalised lessons based on students’ performance.”

Digital University will lead to exponential growth: Jagadesh Kumar

Jagadesh Kumar

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently tied up with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) with the objective that students from the remotest areas can have access to online education facilities.

The information has been declared by Professor Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar, Chairman, University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India, who was chief guest at the roundtable – ‘Enhancing Competitiveness and Quality Revolution in Indian Higher Education (IHE).

UGC chairperson said, “We are working on a multi-dimensional way to make sure that education reaches the last student in the most remote area. So, we have signed up with MeitY as they have a large number of common service centres (CSCs). Any student can walk into those centres, pay a nominal monthly fee and access digital universities”.

“The introduction of Common Universities Entrance Test Undergraduate (CUET UG) 2022 has been well received by the students and the stakeholders. A huge number of students, around 14.9 lakhs registered for this examination, which is only next to NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test),” he said. He also gave insights into the various initiatives undertaken by the Government of India to expand and enhance higher education in the country.

“That’s an idea that we are floating so that there is wider discussion among the stakeholders. There is no formal decision that we have taken on this”, he added, speaking on the possible merger between NEET and JEE.

With respect to bringing international students into Indian educational institutions, he said, “Recently we have raised the upper cap to 25 per cent, earlier it was 15 per cent. And in the same guidelines, we also said that as far as the admission of these students are concerned, each individual university can have their own admission policy and in terms of fixing their own tuition fee. We hope that with this flexibility given to our education institutions we will be able to attract a lot of international students.”

He informed us that the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) is going to be enhanced soon. He further added, “It is going to be a comprehensive document. It will become the foundation of all kinds of education with the integration of three pillars – school education, skill education and national higher education,”.

“There are around 126 deemed universities in India and we are already working on the deemed-to-be universities’ regulations. Removing the tag ‘deemed-to-be’ requires an amendment at the UGC part, but it will surely happen,” he concluded.

Students’ confidence marginally higher in metro cities than non-metro cities: Survey

Students

India stands at a confidence level of 75 on a scale of 100 and 36 per cent of students have indicated top-bracket confidence levels (81-100), according to a survey conducted by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and EdTech company LEAD.

TISS and LEAD today released India’s first Student Confidence Index, on International Literacy Day 2022.

The confidence index is much higher among students in metropolitan cities. The number of students studying in CBSE/ICSE schools is marginally higher than that of state board students. However, in Delhi, the confidence index is marginally higher for state board students, i.e. 83 per cent in comparison to 80 per cent of ICSE/CBSE boards, according to this survey.

In this study, the researchers surveyed 2,807 students across six metros and six non-metros of India, in which they covered students from classes 6 to 10 in the presence of their parents. The results have been divided into four categories: aspirant, leader, all-rounder and influencer. At an all-India level, one in every two respondent students is in the all-rounder segment, with a little over one-third of students finding space in the influencer segment. Interestingly, the trend is similar and metro and non-metro cities, although the size of the influencer segment in metros (44 per cent) is significantly higher when compared to non-metro students (28 per cent).

It was also observed that the confidence index of students in classes 9 and 10 (75 per cent) is only slightly higher when compared to students in classes 6-8 (74 per cent). In non-metro cities, Surat has topped the confidence index at 83 per cent, followed by Guntur at 75, Guwahati at 71, Aligarh at 69, Coimbatore at 68, and Ambala at 62.

The five factors that contribute to confidence-building in students are conceptual understanding, communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and exposure to opportunities. The gap between Hyderabad’s and Ambala’s respective confidence index shows that students in metros have a clear advantage over their peers in non-metros.
