Mobile Apps: EFFECTIVE TOOLS TO PROMOTE SCHOOL LEARNING

Mobile revolution has changed the lives of adults in many ways, and now companies are targeting children of all ages through various mobile applications like gaming applications, learning applications and many more. Akash Tomer of Elets News Network (ENN) writes about what makes these mobile tools effective in enabling kids to learn new concepts.

Preschool and primary education days of any child define his or her future trajectory in academics. The children of 21st Century are developing new habits for learning and social development. Digital media and electronic gadgets are now playing a critical role in development of their learning habits. In their initial years, children spend more hours in front of various screens and with different kinds of media than devoting time to reading and outdoor play.

Education or learning applications emerged as the ways to accelerate learning among kids through digital media.

gauravIt has been commonly observed that smart phone devices appeal to children as young as three years of age. Market reports confirm that digital devices with accessible touch screens are gaining mass popularity. Industry majors have understood the market potential of apps. Apple Inc. has launched a separate section on the iTunes store dedicated to apps for kids. Educational media leaders too have launched numerous education and learning apps for kids.

Describing the importance of mobile apps, A S Ganesh, Founder & Managing Director, SMARTKiDZ Educare India said, “Communication through app increases parents’ understanding of classroom procedures, philosophies and policies. Parents then feel more involved in their child’s school and more connected to the teacher”.

Innovative mobile learning applications are everywhere on the internet. Educators, application developers and companies are now focusing on every attribute to improve school learning for children.

Study Many apps have come up to help children organise and schedule their study sessions for self-learning. Some of these are:

  •  My Study Life– The tool helps creating a learning schedule and assist kids stay ahead in completing their assignments, exams, important deadlines and collaborative group work.
  •  GoConqr– One can discover mind maps, flashcards, quizzes and notes to help them learn quickly and easily.
  •  Khan Academy – One of the best applications to catch up the entire stuff one missed (or forgot) from high school in subjects like biology, history, physics and mathematics.

 Free Books– This app has a collection of more than 50,000 free e-books and is also supported by the Kindle app. l Speed Reader– It is one of the best speed reading Android applications. It can run more efficiently on smaller Android phone screens.
Overdrive– This app allows kids borrow e-books, audio books, and videos from the local library. Its overdrive supports more than 30,000 libraries worldwide.

Google Keep– The quickest way to offload ideas, thoughts, and to-dos.

Lecture Notes– It is an Android application for note-taking by handwriting on the screen, in particular with a stylus.

Mobile application to learn science: Students can have the complete knowledge through these apps. They can also play games to learn concepts of any science subject.

  •  Complete Biology– This advanced biology application covers 35 important topics with tutorials, formula, exam questions and biology practical.
  •  Chemistry Lab– It is a fun app where you learn about organic chemistry while playing games with actual chemical reactions.
  •  Pocket Physics– This mobile application covers most of the physical formulas with descriptions and images.

Mobile application to learn mathematics: Kids can learn tricks, algorithms and practice mathematics questions with the help of these apps.

Math Tricks– This mobile learning application is designed to learn interesting mathematical tricks for solving mathematical problems quickly.

Math Workout– The mobile application uses an advanced training algorithm to train your brain through solving math problems.

Math Duel– A two player math game that test the speed of math processing skills.

With preschools gaining immense significance in determining career of children, most of the young parents in cities find themselves perplexed when it comes to select the right preschool for their wards.

Our cover-interview highlights the role of EuroKids International, a chain of preschools, is playing across three countries with its 900+ centres by redefining preschool franchise education space.

The latest issue carries “India’s Top Preschool Ranking 2016” in an at tempt to evaluate the finest preschools of the country based on infrastructure, pedagogy, student enrollment, innovation in ICT etc. It is hoped this will serve the purpose of ranking which has been done based on a vast data collected from four regions of the country and judged by an esteemed jury.

We have tried to explore some aspects linked to preschool like franchises’ scope and role in preschools, safety and surveillance, app-based learning in preschools, infrastructure, and uses of Apps prepared by schools as special stories.

The issue also carries report of the Education & Skill Summit Jharkhand 2016, organised by the Government of Jharkhand in association with Elets Techno Media Pvt. Ltd., in Ranchi. It was an endeavour to explore some of the challenges, scope and investment opportunities in the State by bringing edu-leaders, experts, industry leaders and stakeholders under one roof.

The day-long meet in October explored the vision, hope, and expectations of various people linked to the state’s educational ecosystem.

Public-private participation in education, offering incentives to private university stakeholders, framing conducive policies for attracting investment, implementing tech enabled programmes for imparting quality education – it was underlined — that these steps were in the right direction.

IIT Delhi and ReNew Power Ventures inks MoU

ReNew Power Ventures and Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi (IITD) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up a research facility on renewable energy. The MoU between the two is signed with an aim to encourage talent and to create opportunities for academic research in renewable energy sector.

According to a company release, a Chair in Renewable Energy and Storage sector will be established with representatives from both the entities. Under the MOU, a research and training programmes will be proposed jointly for representatives of both ReNew and IIT Delhi to lead or participate in.

“We believe that this collaboration will play a key role in promoting the advanced development of clean energy technologies through innovative research to generate a greater awareness about and thereby promote the use of clean energy,” said Sumant Sinha, Chairman & CEO, ReNew Power said.

“The synergistic combination of a large pool of expertise available at IIT Delhi and the vast industrial experience of Renew Power in the field of renewable energy will help in focusing the research efforts towards addressing India specific issues in this important area. It is quite satisfying for us that IITD is partnering with Renew Power, which has been established by our own alumnus and I am confident that Sumant’s proven leadership will be a great inspiration for young students in our institute and will inspire them to think green,” V. Ramagopal Rao, Director, IIT Delhi said.

Rajasthan, first state in the country to make students data available online

Rajasthan becomes the first state in India to make the data of students available online. The data of all school-going students of Rajasthan will be available online, said Vasudev Devnani, Minister of State for School Education.

The process of uploading data of students online with the help of special software is in process and the data of government school students has already been uploaded. Now, the details of students of private schools, military schools, madarasas and others will be made available online, he added.

The minister further mentioned that National Centre for Science Information has developed the special software. The data will be uploaded on the website of the private school portal managed by the state government.

On December 4, 1957, Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education (RBSE) was established in Jaipur and in 1961; the same was shifted to Ajmer. The Board works for the promotion and development of secondary education in the state.

Harvard planning to launch digital courses for India

The US-based Harvard University is planning to launch free e-learning courses to make Indian students employble in entry level jobs.

Vivek Chachra, Country Manager (India), Harvard Business Publishing (HBP), said, “The gap between quality of product that education institutes create and the kind of employee organisations look for at

entry level is wide. There are almost 12 million graduates that enter the workforce every year and nearly 80% of these are unemployable by organisations”.

The Ivy League research varsity is planning to collaborate with a channel to expand its reach to individual students and also looking for early career experts who can use their smartphones to access the content.

“Given that there is a rapidly evolving digital landscape in the country, we created HBR Ascend as a strategic enhancement to the kind of impact we can have in India. For the first time in 90 years of our history, we are actually building and reaching out to impact the lives of individuals on a scale that is several times larger than what we have been doing so far,” Chachra added.

HBP is a not-for-profit subsidiary of Harvard Business School.

BSE Institute joins hands with Israel’s IDC Herzliya University

BSE Institute Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bombay Stock Exchange Ltd, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Israel’s IDC Herzliya University to collaboate on educational programmes, research projects and student exchange programmes.
The partnership will enable students from both the countries to study abroad and exchange innovative ideas.
“This tie up with IDC Herzliya is an excellent opportunity to develop Indian students in the domain of innovation, technology and startups. This collaboration also helps us develop research based
projects in the area of cyber security, big data, amongst other things,” said Ambarish Datta, MD and CEO of the BSE Institute Ltd.

TSSC signs MoU with Art of Living Digital India Movement

The Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) and Art of Living Digital India Movement have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on developing skill among Indian youth and creating employment opportunities.

The partnership has been forged under the Central government’s “Skill India” initiative.

“Digital technology is one of the areas where India has proven it’s capability. Since majority of our population is young, vocational skill training in this sector can strengthen India’s position in this field globally,” said Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, founder, Art of Living.

Under the partnership, The Art of Living Digital India Movement’s network of centres all across the country will be used to make people skillful and to spread digital education.

“Considering The Art of Living’s initiatives and reach in the remotest part of India, TSSC through this partnership will take the support of The Art of Living Digital India Movement to enhance

employability and skill development of lakhs of youth,” said SP Kochhar, CEO, TSSC.

“TSSC’s main aim for the next 5 years is to train approximately 8.67 million people which will be beneficial for the telecom industry’s growth. We are outreaching rural areas through both online and offline courses via training centres,” Kochhar added.

3.63 lakh schools covered under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan: HRD Minister

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the Central government’s programme for universal elimentary education, now covers 2.04 lakh primary and 1.59 lakh upper primary schools to ensure universal access to education throughout the country, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has said.

Speaking during the Question Hour in Lok Sabha, Javadekar said the main objective of SSA is universal enrollment and efforts are being made to bring children, including girls, from all sections of the society to school.

In order to promote education among girls, strategies like opening of schools in the neighbourhood, appointment of additional teachers including women teachers, free textbooks, free uniforms, separate toilets for girls, teachers sensitisation programmes to promote girls participation and gender-sensitive teaching-learning material are being followed under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, the HRD Minister said.

He added that in educationally backward blocks where female rural literacy rate is below the national average, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalays have been opened. These schools will provide residential upper primary schools for girls belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Muslim and BPL families.

IIM Bangalore to encourage women entrepreneurship

IIM-Bangalore is all set to join hands with investment bank Goldman Sachs to encourage women entrepreneurs and startups in the country.

The N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) will conduct the new entrepreneurship programme in association with the bank.

“We have designed this course by combining the latest research on entrepreneurial methods and best practices,” said Suresh Bhagavatula, Chairperson of Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Development at NSRCEL

According to IIM-B, the programme would be a good platform for women to start their own businesses. The programme, launched as a pilot, will get support from the Wall Street financial services firm and will entirely be free of cost for all participants for a year.

The programme will be conducted in three stages and will incorporate business incubation, classroom training, and online besides providing networking opportunities, mentoring, and access to capital.

“Goldman Sachs is committed to investing in communities and is honoured to support IIM-B in their efforts to educate the next generation of women entrepreneurs in India,” said Sonjoy Chatterjee, Chairman and Co-CEO of Goldman Sachs-India.
