President Ram Nath Kovind provided his formal assent for renaming Ministry of Human Resource Development to as the Ministry of Education as part of the New Education Policy 2020. This suggestion was provided in the latest draft of the New National Education Policy, NEP 2020, which was prepared by K Kasturirangan.
The changing of the name was approved by the Union Cabinet on the very day of the suggestion that is on July 29, 2020. The name was changed on the ministry’s official website as well as the education minister’s social media accounts on August 4, 2020.
The President’s nod was essential to bring about any changes decided upon by the cabinet in the government machinery. The name change was approved by Ram Nath Kovind on August 14, 2020. A gazette notification published on Monday said the President had given his nod to changing the name.
A panel which was headed by former ISRO chairman K Kasturirangan was tasked with working on the new NEP. It had first proposed that the name of the ministry must be changed again.
In the year 1985, the Ministry of Education’s name was changed to the HRD ministry. The last National Education Policy, NEP was made in 1986. It was later amended in 1992. Now almost 30 years have been passed since the first policy came into being. Thus on July 29, 2020, the Union Cabinet approved a new education policy and took some major decisions regarding the Indian Education System.
