Nurturing patriotism through education is important: Lt Gen Kamal Jit Singh

Lt Gen Kamal Jit Singh

“We must focus on nurturing patriotism among our students. If a person wants to do something for the country, joining Indian Army is not the only way. Being a good citizen is also one of the best ways to serve the country. Our efforts supporting the country’s development and betterment encourage soldiers on border,” said Lt Gen Kamal Jit Singh, State Information Commissioner and Advisor to Hon’ble Chief Minister.

While speaking at the 11 th School Leadership Summit Chandigarh as Guest of Honour, Lt Gen Singh has touched upon various key issues and opportunities related to education sector. He said, “To improve the education scenario in India, it is important for all of us to share the responsibility. It is the duty of principals from finest schools in India to understand and cater the needs of students hailing from tier-2 and tier-3 cities by interacting with them, and building and managing a micro-environment to provide such an education.”

Lt Gen Singh also emphasised on an important aspect that imparting sensible education is very important. He said, “Another important aspect is to improve the education sector sensibly. Innovations and latest methodologies are considerably exciting for every stakeholder of education ecosystem. But, we must be sensible enough to adopt those changes so that changes help building a sustainable and quality education landscape.”

He also suggested ways to fulfill the educational needs of students by leveraging India’s demographic dividend. According to him, “India has got a huge demographic dividend which needs to be leveraged by the educational institutions to fulfill the educational needs across the country. Countries like Japan, Germany and Italy has deficiency of skilled manpower. We can help these countries in this regard. We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Japan to provide five lakh skilled employees.”

Touching a very important issue of nurturing employable youth, Lt Gen Singh suggested ways for it. He said, “Simultaneously, schools are also needed to nurture skilled students for different job roles and not only for white collar or government jobs. Our country not only requires engineers, doctors or government officials but it also requires workers with varied backgrounds. Schools can contribute to it in a big way. In case it is not done seriously, the demographic dividend can become a demographic disaster.”

“Nagaland has a literacy level of around 70% in 2004. There were people in the villages of Nagaland with more than one PhD degrees. But there PhD was in subjects which are irrelevant from education point of view. So, large number of people in India acquires education without acquiring the relevant skills. It is better to create employable youth rather than preparing educated but unemployable youth. As teachers and educators, it is important to identify what kind of end product we are delivering. Though there are challenges but at the same time, it is also equally important that our job is to nurture students who should have a great future ahead,” He further said.

DU Admissions 2019: Delhi University ropes in NTA to conduct entrance exam

DU Admissions 2019

With admission season just around the corner, the Delhi University (DU) is planning to get on board National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct the entrance exam for admission to various courses offered by the varsity.

As per media reports, the proposal has been approved by the admission committee and is being sent to NTA as well.

Speaking on the latest development, Delhi University admissions chairperson, Rajeev Gupta said, “There is a proposal to ask NTA to conduct the DU entrance exams. The exam will only be for the courses for which entrance is already a mandate and no new courses are being brought under the ambit. The pattern and syllabus for the exam are also to remain the same”.

Notably, Delhi University allows admission on merit-basis for most of the courses while there are other courses for which entrance exam is conducted.

Reportedly, NTA has also given the nod to DU’s proposal and now the ball is in varsity’s court to decide on the rules of conducting the examination, and thereafter reaching a consensus.

Delhi University has been rooting for making the admission process online since a very long time (three admission cycles) but owing to the internal rifts it couldn’t reach a conclusion.

The idea was suppressed citing the reason that it might prove to be unfavourable for students hailing from rural areas or with lesser privileged backgrounds as they are likely to face issues attempting exams online.

Recently, when Jawahar Lal University adopted the online process of conducting examination, it once again gave fire to the agitation.

The JNU students Union (JNUSU) has opposed the MCQ-based exam claiming that the time-tested method of conducting JNU entrance exam assessing the different aspects of a student’s potential for learning and research has been replaced without any academic reasoning.

The Delhi University, following the JNU’s path, has also decided to give some advantage to students from government schools and those who have done their schooling in villages. This is in addition to the benefits given to female students.

Good habits are key to success in life: Padmashree Dr D Y Patil

“I don’t see god in temples, god is within you. If you develop good qualities, good habits and character you are bound to succeed. It is important to plan what you want to do in life and be dedicated for that all the time,” said Padmashree Dr D Y Patil, Former Governor Bihar, Tripura & West Bengal, and Founder, D Y Patil Group.

Dr Patil graced the 11th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave, Pune on May 4, 2019. Organised by Elets Technomedia Pvt Ltd, Asia and the Middle East’s premier media and technology research company, the conclave witnessed the congregation of edu-leaders and eminent stakeholders of the industry under one roof.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Dr Patil highlighted the significance of planning and doing things selflessly in life.

“Whatever you do if you do with planning you are going to succeed. Ego is bad for living a happy life and a person without ego enjoys the life most. If you do anything dedicatedly, joyfully, and without any self consideration, every action is close to god,” he said.

Further, Dr Patil emphasised on the power of subconscious mind and how it can help in creating wonders and making one’s efforts successful.

“The relation of conscious mind and subconscious mind is like land and farmer. Land will never guide you what to sow, you will have to select the seed, plant it on the pasture. Whatever you plant, it will grow,” Dr Patil added.

He gave the example of George Washington, who was once a peon and went on to become the President of the US. He said, “Nothing happens accidentally. George Washington was a peon. While ringing the bell he used to go in trance and say I want to be the president of USA.  At the age of 27, he became a senate member and at the age of 52 he became the governor of state. At the age of 62 he became the President of America. All the time he was chanting, I wanted to become the President of America.”

Further, giving the example of his own life, Dr Patil revealed what helped him in realising the dream of becoming the Governor of a State.

“I also did not become Governor accidentally. I used to chant day and night about being a governor and getting successful at it. And I got the result. So what you repeat all the time and if you accept it, it is bound to happen.”

Lastly, addressing the representatives from Higher Education and Human Resource Industry, Dr D Y Patil professed about incorporating spiritual and moral values within self to achieve success.

Leveraging diversity will help India imparting quality higher education: Temjen Imna Along

Temjen Imna Along

“India is a country with huge diversifications not only in terms of food or culture but also in terms of Language, Geography and other aspects. It is very important that we leverage all the diversities of a particular region. A lesson taught in regional language will be more effective than the one taught in any other language,” said Temjen Imna Along, Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Government of Nagaland.

The Minister, as the Guest of Honour, shared his thoughts at 10th Higher Education and Human Resource Conclave Chandigarh in March 2019. He also inaugurated the conclave in the presence of other eminent dignitaries.

During his speech, Along touched various aspects like importance of digitisation in education, need of North East States’ inclusion for holistic development of the nation and important factors to impart quality higher education in the country.

Showing his happiness for gradually improving quality of higher education, Along said, “It is for the first time since last many decades when the North East feels connected to the rest of the country in the field of higher education and technical education.”

“We really thank our Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji, Our Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar Ji and his team of bureaucrats and academicians who are working for it,” he added.

He emphasised that quality of higher education plays an important role in the development of youth and country holistically. He said, “I’m glad that we have come to realise the importance of higher education and technical education in our country. There is a huge gap between industry and academia. I belong to North East part of the country which is a cluster of eight small states. In Nagaland, the minimum qualification to teach is a Doctorate degree and in our department there is a dominance of women. So, it can be said that in Nagaland, women are more educationally empowered than men.”

“In a small State like Nagaland, we have 12 districts and in my one year of being in the Government, I’ve been to almost all the government colleges and interacted with students there. I’ve seen in my own State, we have 16 major tribes and a few minor tribes. Each district or tribe functions in a different way. It’s important to harness this diversity through education,” he further said.

Praising the accreditation policy of the country, the minister also stressed on the need of region-wise accreditation standards for higher education institutes. He said, “Another important thing that we need to focus here is to develop accreditation standards as per the region’s requirements. Current accreditation standards may be beneficial for the colleges located in Delhi-NCR or other nearby States. But accreditation must adopt the standards which are suitable for geographical and regional requirements.”

Referring Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) as one of the best policies implemented by the Indian Government, Along said, “RUSA is not only meant to develop the infrastructure of higher education institutes across the country but it also have provisions to implement better policies for Skill & Vocational Training across the country. I am thankful for the government to implement the scheme as it is supporting the North East to impart quality higher education.”

Education should help a person enjoy their life: Dr Hari Om

Dr Hari Om

“Education should actually help a person to enjoy their life but it changes as we start focusing on secondary things. So, it is important that education help a person to become good human being along with being academically excellent, said Dr Hari Om, IAS, Secretary, GAD, Government of Uttar Pradesh.

“In a survey conducted recently, India has gone down by seven positions in terms happiness index,” he added.

He was speaking during the 10th School Leadership Summit Lucknow March 2019. Showing his concern over the continuously deteriorating quality of education, Dr Om said, “In terms of global education index, India is at 130th position. Around 30 percent of children are not getting primary education as either they are drop outs or can’t get themselves enrolled in schools. We used to be known as “Jagat Guru” in ancient times and we not to cherish our golden past with an eye on present. Rather than ignoring the problem, we must find out its solution.”

He also insisted on defining the objective of the education. According to him, “Another important thing is to define the objective of the education. Currently, the sole objective of the education is to get a job. But, we need to focus on physical education, extracurricular activities, and moral education along with academics. Students are overburdened with study and that’s why they have no time for such essential things.”

“A renowned school can be good name as far as education market is concerned but most of the educational institutes in the country are still required to prove their importance for betterment of society. Education is not meant only for getting job rather an educated person must help society to gain new heights. We must remember that life should not be confined within the books but a person must enjoy every other aspect of it as well,” he added.

Remembering Mahatama Gautam Buddha, Dr Om said, “In the time of Mahatama Buddha, the education was not used to be given within walls rather students used to interact with nature while enhancing their academic skills.” He also gave examples of Rabindra Nath Tagore and Mahatama Gandhi who always advocated imparting education in natural environment.

Dr Om also suggested imparting basic education related to Indian culture, traditions and customs that may help students know our history and also have respect for it. He said, “Hindi is our mother tongue but for most of the students, it is difficult to speak Hindi for long. Moreover, they must not aware about which fruit is placed in front of them rather they must be aware that what processes or efforts are required to get  that food.”

He also discussed the relevancy of current syllabus during the summit. According to him, “There are various topics which are irrelevant for students of any class. Most of the topics or chapters in different classrooms do not help inculcating any kind of values among students. At the same time, they are irrelevant for their professional life ahead. So, it is important to inculcate moral values and life skills among the students.”
