The government of Delhi has planned to conduct a study to assess the impact on the mental health of students and their emotional well-being, during Covid 19.

According to government officials, the study would focus on students, how they feel about the closure of schools, Covid-19, and a sudden shift towards online education. The schools in Delhi were closed after a lockdown in March 2020 and reopened this month. The planning department of the Delhi government issued a request for proposal (RFQ) to hire a suitable agency for the study, which will include students, parents, and teachers from government schools.

“The study is designed to assess the emotional well-being and mental health of all types of students, boys and girls, from different classes, age groups, social and economic backgrounds, which will provide an insight into how students from different backgrounds responded, adapted and handled the effects of COVID-19,” mentioned the document.

The document further said as many as 44.80 lakh students had enrolled in Delhi schools during 2020-21. A total of 8,400 students, 1,680 parents, and 1,680 teachers will be surveyed for schools across 28 zones in Delhi. The study will be performed through personal interviews with students from Class I to XII, as well as parents and teachers from all 28 education zones in Delhi. The Directorate of Education and the planning department of Delhi together have come up with separate questionnaires for each group of students.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations will soon start online courses, aspring to disseminate traditional Indian knowledge, about its art, architecture, timeless epics and Vedas, among the world community. They will also be launching a dedicated portal for the same in April. This was stated by the ICCR president Vinay Sahasrabuddhe on Monday.

Addressing a press conference at Azad Bhawan to share details about the Ministry of External Affairs’ (MEA) plans to hold celebrations under the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, he also said that a three-day crafts fair ‘Coalescence’, will be hosted in the city from February 23-25, wherein artists and craftspersons from 11 states will showcase traditional art forms.

The MEA has already hosted events like ‘GenNext Democracy Network Programme’ (in November 2021) and many more programmes are lined up as part of the ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ celebrations, to which delegates from various democratic countries have been invited, he said.

Due to COVID-19, the schedule was impacted, but by early April, the situation is expected to be better, he said. During the ongoing celebrations to mark 75 years of India’s Independence, “We are also going to start Universalisation of Traditional Indian Knowledge System or UTIKS, as part of which people living in foreign countries will be able to learn about traditional knowledge of our country through online courses, and appreciate our art, culture and epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana,” Sahasrabuddhe said.

When asked about the courses to be offered, Sahasrabuddhe, also a Rajya Sabha member, said, “This will be our own way of running an edX or a Coursera on traditional Indian knowledge.” “There will be short-term and long-term online courses, ranging from four hours to 40 hours, about the Indian culture. The academic partner for this programme is Savitribai Phule Pune University, he added. “Other institutions may join later, but to begin with, Savitribai Phule Pune University is our partner. This permanent course is open to all, and there is no bar on age or anything else.

 

Haryana CM Khattar says no to class 5 and class 8 board exams this year

The Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar, has said that the state board examinations for classes 5 and 8 in Haryana schools have been deferred for the next session. He said, “In wake of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, studies were affected. Thus, we have decided to defer the board examinations for class 5th and 8th for the current session. The board examinations shall be held next year. For the current session, schools have been asked to conduct the examinations at their own level.”

He further elaborated, “To discuss the issue of whether to hold board examinations for these two classes, a meeting is scheduled to be held on February 25. We have decided not to hold state board examinations for these two classes, for the current session.”

The board of School Education Haryana had recommended conducting board examinations for grades 5 and 8 in all government and private schools in Haryana in October 2021. The government had issued a notification and appointed Haryana’s SCERT as the “Academic Authority” for conducting Class 5 and 8 examinations.

President Kovind to launch ‘Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate’ programme tomorrow

The President Ram Nath Kovind will be launching a nationwide week-long programme of competitions and lectures for school students and collegians, titled ‘Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate’, on Tuesday. The programme will be launched through online mode.

The vice-chancellor of Rani Durgavati University, Kapil Deo Mishra said the Union Ministry of Science and Technology has selected three institutions in Madhya Pradesh to organise this programme.

He added “The MP Council of Science and Technology (MPCST) will hold the event in Bhopal, Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur, and the SGSITS College in Indore. Students from government and private institutions can take part, for which they have to register on the government website.”

Senior principal scientist, MPCST Dr. PK Digghara, said, “The ‘Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate’ (science is revered all over) programme aims to attract students towards scientific knowledge of articles of daily use and propagating scientific theories.”

He further added “Each day of the programme is based on different themes. The valedictory function will be on February 28.”

UGC permits 900 autonomous colleges to start online courses

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted permission to 900 additional colleges to provide online degrees to students. This decision will open up new learning opportunities for the students. The decision was also made keeping in view the National education policy 2020, which promotes online education. Students will be able to get their degrees remotely with the help of online education.

Before this order, only universities were allowed to have online courses. Now, around 900 autonomous colleges, which have National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) 3.26 grade, are allowed to offer online degrees and courses. The eligibility criteria for students to enroll in online degree courses includes being Class 12 and undergraduate, qualified for taking admission to UG and PG courses.

Students would be evaluated through online proctored mode or a computer-based test. The students need to maintain 75% minimum attendance in the online degree programmes.

The online programmes will broaden the education horizon for students as well as promote flexibility. UGC is expected to share a detailed framework in March 2022.

IIT to be set up in Dubai as a part of India-UAE trade deal

India has recently made an announcement to set up the Indian Institute of Technology in Dubai. The development has been announced as a part of the India-UAE trade deal signed on February 18, 2022. This is for the first time that a premier Indian education institute will be set up in a foreign country.

In the bilateral meeting between representatives of two countries, a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) was signed on February 18. Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal signed an India-UAE trade deal with the UAE delegation, led by Minister of Economy Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri & Minister of State for Foreign Trade Thani Bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi.

There are a total of 23 IITs in India offering various undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate programmes, which are located across the country. The top IITs in India are IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, and IIT Madras.

Karnataka universities urged to defer degree exams due to Covid-19

The Karnataka state government has requested the Vice Chancellors of universities in Karnataka to consider postponing the semester examinations of degree courses by a month, in view of the third Covid-19 wave.

In an official press statement, the Additional Chief Secretary of Department of Higher Education G Kumar Naik said that the Vice Chancellors of all universities have been requested to take a decision on deferring the examinations in view of the incomplete syllabus.He further informed that the portions remained incomplete as physical classes had to be suspended considering the third Covid-19 wave.

Naik said,”Some of the universities had already announced the schedule of semester examinations but the Commissioner of Department of Collegiate and Technical Education (DCTE) had written a letter asking to postpone the examinations by a month in order to enable students to better prepare.”

 

IIT Jodhpur initiates “Campus RAKSHAK” to help In safe reopening of colleges

Researchers of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur have come up with a framework for educational institutions called “Campus RAKSHAK”. The framework integrates various applications and tools together, to prevent possible spread of COVID-19 and ensure safe reopening of campuses.

The institute has collaborated with several other institutions like IISc Bangalore, IIT Kharagpur, IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, Algorithmic Biologics Pvt Ltd, HeathBadge Private Limited and Prthvi.AI to build, integrate and test to ensure safety on campuses.

Two prototypes of Campus RAKSHAK have already been tested simultaneously at IIT Jodhpur and IIIT Hyderabad, and the team is in talks to devise an affordable and flexible pricing model, product, marketing and sales strategy to reach out to campuses across the country.

Campus RAKSHAK has four components — Tapestry Pooling, Go Corona Go App, Simulators and Health badge. These form a single platform that monitor, predict, and recommend mitigation strategies for campuses against CoViD-19.

Delhi government introduces 11 new Specialised Schools of Excellence

The Delhi government introduced 11 new Specialised Schools of Excellence (SoSEs) this year. With this, the total tally of such schools becomes 31, as per Delhi government officials. The city government established SoSEs to equip students with world-class facilities and instructors for cutting-edge curriculum and learning in specialised fields.

“Following the extremely successful first year, 11 new Specialised Schools of Excellence (SoSEs) have been added to the list and now their numbers have increased to 31,” said a senior Delhi government official.

He further added, “These schools provide specialised education in five areas, which include Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), humanities, performing and visual arts, high-end 21st century skills and Armed Forces Preparatory School.”

Explaining about the admission process “The process of admission for the new session has started in these schools. Students can apply for admission in class 9 in their preferred domain till February 28. Along with this, admissions will also be taken in Class 11 in STEM and Armed Forces Preparatory School (AFPS) this year,” the official added further.

The official added, “Students willing to take admissions can reach out to the admission help desk set up at their nearest SoSE.”

K Umamheshwar Rao assumes charge as NIT Rourkela director

The National Institute of Technology, Rourkela got a new director as K Umamheshwar Rao assumed office as the director on February 18, 2022. He succeeds Simanchalo Panigrahi, who had been appointed as interim director of the institute in October 2021. Prior to his appointment at NIT Rourkela, he served as the director of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka.

A graduate in Mining Engineering from Osmania University, K Umamaheshwar Rao worked in various mining industries for around three years.He further pursued his MTech in Mining Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University and acquired his PHD at the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University. He has also served as a faculty at IIT Kharagpur for almost three decades.
