Pokhriyal: JEE Main 2021 to be conducted in regional languages

To provide relief to huge students, Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal has announced that the JEE Main examinations will be conducted in regional languages from 2021 in order to make sure that the student will have an advantage due to the language. The minister while announcing the decision stated that it was a long-awaited reform and a special task force has been formed for teaching technical engineering and regional languages.

While speaking to the media, the minister pointed out that the overall quality of the examinations will improve since the students will understand the concepts in their mother tongue which will help them think better.

The union minister took to Twitter to inform the students of the decision of conducting the examinations in the regional language. He stated that English will not be completely eradicated from the education system but instead will only be a medium of instruction along with the other regional languages. He further added that the JEE Main examinations will be conducted in the regional languages so that the students are not at a disadvantage due to the language.

Steps have been taken by the top IITs in the country to promote the teaching in the regional language in the first year. JEE Main exams were previously conducted in English, Hindi, and Gujarati languages across the country.

Official notification is yet to be released for the JEE Main 2021 examinations. The minister recently conducted a seminar addressing the queries of the students and parents.

Prof Pradeep Kumar Mishra appointed as new VC of Jharkhand Technical University

In a major development, Prof Pradeep Kumar Mishra of IIT-BHU, Varanasi has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Jharkhand Technical University. Prof Mishra has been appointed for three years from the date of contribution. Prof Pradeep Kumar Mishra is currently a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT-BHU.

He did a Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering from IIT, Roorkee, while an MTech with specialization in Petroleum and Coal from IIT Mumbai. He received his doctorate from IIT-BHU and has been working in the institute since 1997.

Professor of Chemical Engineering Prof Pradeep Mishra holds several important responsibilities at IIT-BHU. He is the coordinator of Malaviya Innovation and Entrepreneurship Promotion Center at IIT-BHU, where new ideas and startups are provided with the market and appropriate skills.

Apart from this, recently he has also been appointed as the student headmaster at IIT. Prior to this, he has also done a lot of work on Ganga cleanliness and pollution control.

Prof Mishra received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from IIT-Roorkee in 1986, MTech from IIT-Bombay and PhD in Chemical Engineering from the then IT-BHU in 1995. He has done a lot of research work in the fields of bio energy, bio compatible polymers and nano fiber, bio degradation etc.

Dr Anil Dhagat joins as new VC of Shri Krishna University

VP Naidu calls for close linkage between universities and industry

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu pitched for establishing a close linkage between universities and industry to mentor and handhold students with novel business ideas.

Addressing a global Entrepreneurs summit through video conference from Visakhapatnam, Naidu asked universities to set up incubation centres to tap and nurture entrepreneurial talent among youngsters. He also appealed to the corporate sector to come forward to fund and promote entrepreneurial ecosystem on university campuses.

Noting that the youth comprise about 65 per cent of India’s population, Naidu stressed that the vast energies of the talented youth should be tapped fully and their mindset should be changed from being job-seekers to job-creators. The vice president also wanted a special drive to be launched for promoting entrepreneurship among women. There is a huge potential for promoting women entrepreneurs in the country, he said, according to an official statement,” he said.

Referring to various studies, he said most entrepreneurial countries in the world are also the most prosperous and entrepreneurship makes people happier and more fulfilled.

Highlighting that entrepreneurship is not only about profits, Naidu said it is also about making people’s lives better through education, healthcare and basic human rights. “It is about valuing both competition and compassion.” Talking about the challenges thrown up by the COVID-19 pandemic, the vice president said this is the time to turn adversities into opportunities. Calling upon youngsters to come out with innovative ideas to meet the emerging challenges, he wanted the creation of an ecosystem that can enable many innovative ideas to be translated into promising start-ups.

Education ministry recommends measures on school bag policy

With the focus on the New Education Policy, the Education Ministry recommended a slew of measures under the new school bag policy. The policy recommends capping the maximum weight of the school bags at 10 per cent of the student’s weight. Apart from these, recommendations were also made for no homework till Class 2, lockers in schools, digital weighing machines to check the weight of the bag and discontinuing wheeled carrier or trolley school bags.

The suggestions, which are in line with the new National Education Policy, the weight of the school bag should be in the ratio of 1:10 with the body weight. “Based on research studies conducted in this area, recommendations of international agencies about the standard weight of school bag, it is recommended to follow universally accepted ratio of weight for school bag as 10 per cent of the body weight of the student across classes 1 to 10,” it says.

The policy document further recommends that school bags should have proper compartments. “Schoolbag needs to be light-weight with proper compartments, and (should) contain two padded and adjustable straps that can be squarely fit on both the shoulders. Wheeled carriers should not be allowed as it may hurt children while climbing stairs,” it reads.

It adds, “Schools need to ensure that the facilities which are mandated for schools to provide, such as mid-day meals etc. are adequate and of good quality so that children are not carrying items, such as a lunchbox.

AICTE hosts Online Mapathon with IIT Bombay, ISRO, FOSSE

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in association with Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and FOSSE (Free Open Source Software in Education) is hosting an ‘Online Mapathon’ event to promote the use of Indian satellite imagery for developing resource maps in the country.

The online event has been inaugurated by Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of  IITB and Prof. Kannan Moudgalya, Principal Investigator, FOSSEE IITB.

A crowdsourced mapping initiative, IITB-ISRO-AICTE Mapathon aims to popularize the use of Indian satellite imagery and the use of open source educational tools to create resource maps for the country.

Through this Mapathon initiative, AICTE, ISRO and IITB aim to sensitize the public about the potential of ISRO data for various uses that include tracking natural calamities, floods, droughts, crop failure, soil fertility assessments, water and cropping area.

“Even though the Indian government agencies are using ISRO maps as a key tool for resource analysis, most of these maps are not made by common citizens, thus lacking in their comprehensive usage” said Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT-B.

“Crowdsourcing and citizen science activities can aid in rapidly and locally processing satellite images to make maps through the National Mapathon. This Mapathon will use freely available ISRO satellite images,and with help of an open source QGIS software to provide uniform outputs spatially and temporally for the entire country,” added Chaudhuri.

WBBSE board schools to promote students of Class 6 to 9

The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education has decided to promote students of class 6 to 9 to the next class without any annual examination in schools affiliated to the WBBSE due to the COVID-19 situation in the 2020 academic year.

In a letter to headmasters of the state-run and state-aided schools on December 7, WBBSE said for the 2020 academic session, students from class 6 to 9 will be promoted to the next class automatically without any annual exams till the pandemic situation prevailed.

“However whenever the school opens and classes begin regularly, the teachers will have to first revise the old syllabus completely in the interest of students,” before taking up any new chapter, a board official told.

Referring to the government’s decision about not holding the selection test for Madhyamik (class 10) candidates next year, the board asked the schools to ensure it is implemented. “However, for the sake of preparedness by the students, the schools can hold mock tests if deemed necessary,” the official said.

There is no word or advisory on the part of state government about the possible date of reopening of schools. Education Minister Partha Chatterjee recently said the government will take a call on the issue after the COVID-19 situation improved. Chatterjee had further said that as recommended by the syllabus committee, 30 per cent of Madhyamik (Class 10) and Uchha Madhyamik (Class 12) curriculum will be curtailed as the pandemic forced the closure of campuses since the third week of March.

Bombay HC: Ensure online education for specially-abled students

The Bombay High Court said it was the Maharashtra government’s duty to ensure special online education for specially-abled students across the state and suggested using Doordarshan to telecast educational programmes. A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni was hearing a public interest litigation filed by an NGO, Anamprem, raising concerns over problems being faced by students with disabilities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The petitioner’s advocate, Uday Warunjikar, told the court that due to various problems like non-availability of staff, or mobile facilities, students with disabilities are unable to pursue their education in this pandemic. Warunjikar suggested the government make use of local government channels and radio to impart education for such students. “Find out some solution.. It is the state government’s duty. You (government) can take some slot.. for one or two hours.. on Doordarshan and show special educational programmes,” Chief Justice Datta said.

The bench directed the petitioner to submit suggestions to the state government and asked the government to study them and consider what measures can be undertaken to address the issue. The court directed the government to submit its report by January 18.
