Asia’s Biggest Design Institute to Come Up in Delhi

The institute is proposed to be set up on the lines of National Institute of Design (NID) but it will be much bigger resource wise

 

New Delhi: Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University in Delhi will soon set up an Institute of Design in the east campus of the university located in Surajmal Vihar in east Delhi.

To be built at an estimated cost of Rs 200 crore, it will be the biggest design institute in Asia, Delhi’s Higher Education Minister AK Valia claimed here on Monday.

“The institute of Design will be Asia’s biggest centre,” Walia said adding that the blueprint of the institute has been sent to the chief Minister for clearance.

The institute is proposed to be set up on the lines of National Institute of Design (NID) but it will be much bigger resource wise, a University official said.

Set up in 1961, the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad is internationally acclaimed as one of the finest educational and research institutions for Industrial, Communication, Textile and IT Integrated Design.

Besides, the IP University has also decided to shift School of Architecture and Planning, located in the varsity’s Kashmere Gate campus to the East Campus. “The completion of the project is expected in two years,” the officer said.

The university is also planning to start three new centres of studies – Centre of Study of Indigenous Literature, Centre for Film and Culture Studies and Centre for Development and Planning.
