All government, government-aided, and private schools across Odisha will reopen on June 18 following the end of the summer vacation, School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond announced. The decision was taken after the arrival of the southwest monsoon brought down temperatures across the state, creating favourable conditions for students to return to classrooms.
Schools in Odisha had been closed since April 27 due to intense heatwave conditions affecting several districts. Authorities have now decided against extending the summer break in order to maintain the academic calendar and minimise disruptions to learning.
The state government said it is closely monitoring weather conditions and may reassess the situation if extreme heat or uncomfortable weather returns after schools reopen. Student health and safety will remain a top priority while implementing any future decisions.

The minister also said efforts are underway to ensure the timely distribution of textbooks and smooth resumption of academic activities across schools. Officials have been directed to streamline preparations ahead of the reopening.
The reopening marks the beginning of a new academic phase after an extended summer vacation caused by severe weather conditions earlier this year. The government aims to keep students on track academically while balancing safety considerations.
