Move afoot to help arts stream regain its glory

The centralized admission process (CAP) has decided to include arts stream after the hiatus of 13 years. Thousands of vacant seats due to non-interest shown by students in arts led to exit of the stream from CAP. Sanjay Jogdand, Police inspector, Nagpur stated that career-wise arts stream is not preferred by students as it is considered less remunerative. Students coming from arts background do not get proper recognition as compared to their counterparts from science background. Jogdand added that to make this stream popular, more job opportunities need to be created which in turn will elevate the esteem of arts stream.

Sakshi Khandelwal, second year student, LAD College stated that people’s attitude towards art stream does not encourage students. Moreover, majority of the population feels that this stream is for girls and subjects involved in it are related to house work. Khandelwal added that stakeholders have to conduct workshops and seminars in order to provide knowledge about the importance of arts stream. To facilitate this agenda, Nagpur University should put in efforts to provide more scope to students from arts stream.

UGC Objection leads to delay in admission at SOL

The admission process of School of Open Learning (SOL), Delhi University, has been halted again as the proposed date, May 27, 2014, has been postponed by the admission committee. Earlier, University Grants Commission (UGC) has objected to Delhi University’s practice of running dual degrees – three year courses on SOL and four year undergraduate programmes. Thus, SOL is planning to restructure the programmes and even nomenclature. Bringing administration and teachers of SOL on a joint agreement for a plan to open 50 study centers in constituent colleges of the university would be another challenge.

SOL is planning to open 50 study centers in different colleges with a cost of Rs. 22.09 lakh per college. This also incorporates the decision to pay Rs. 25,000 to the principal over and above their salary as a part of remuneration. However, SOL teachers are against this plan as they allege that they were not consulted on this matter. Teachers are against the decision as they feel that proposal is meant for siphoning of SOL funds.
