Telangana launches breakfast scheme for students

Telangana breakfast scheme

The Telangana government has launched a nutritious breakfast scheme for students in government schools as the 2026–27 academic year commenced across the state. The initiative aims to improve student health, attendance, punctuality, and overall learning outcomes.

In the first phase, the programme will cover 1,269 government and local body schools along with 33 government junior colleges, benefiting nearly 1.44 lakh students from pre-primary to intermediate levels. The scheme was announced in the State Budget 2026–27 as part of the government’s efforts to strengthen school education and student welfare.

Under the initiative, students will receive nutritious breakfasts along with milk on three days a week and ragi malt on the remaining three days to ensure balanced nutrition. The government expects the programme to help address malnutrition, improve concentration levels, and reduce absenteeism among students.

Alongside the breakfast scheme, Telangana has also extended the Mid-Day Meal Scheme to students studying in government junior colleges, expanding nutritional support to higher secondary education.

State officials said the initiative reflects Telangana’s broader strategy to improve educational outcomes through holistic interventions that combine nutrition, access, and quality education. Authorities believe better nourishment will positively impact academic performance and encourage more students to remain in school.

The launch coincided with the reopening of schools after the summer vacation, marking the beginning of a new academic year focused on enhancing student well-being and strengthening public education infrastructure.
