ADB backs digital learning expansion in Indian government schools

ADB digital learning

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $10 million financing package for Schoolnet India Limited to expand digital learning infrastructure across government schools in India. The initiative is expected to benefit around 4.5 million students and marks ADB’s first private sector investment in India’s digital education space.

The project will establish nearly 58,000 digital classrooms and computer laboratories in at least 1,000 government schools across multiple states. More than 56,000 teachers will also receive training in digital teaching methods to strengthen classroom delivery and improve learning outcomes.

The programme aligns with India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes technology-enabled learning, digital literacy, and equitable access to quality education. Currently, only a limited number of schools have adequate digital infrastructure, highlighting the need for such large-scale interventions.

Half of the financing will come from the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2, an ADB-managed facility supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The initiative aims to bridge learning gaps, particularly in underserved regions, and strengthen India’s digital education ecosystem.
