PM Modi supports hybrid learning in view of implementation of NEP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi backs hybrid system of online and offline learning in view of implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. He has observed that a hybrid system of learning should be developed to avoid overexposure of technology for school-going children. Besides this, PMO further remarks that students have been allowed to pursue two academic programmes concurrently as per UGC Guidelines and a big push to online learning with HEIs is being allowed to run full-fledged online courses with the permissible limit of online content being raised to 40%. He stated that multi-linguality is being promoted to remove language-related challenges in academic attainment.

In an official press release, the PMO revealed, “The databases maintained by Anganwadi centers should be seamlessly integrated with the school databases as children move from Anganwadis to Schools. Regular Health check-ups and screening for children in schools should be carried out with the help of technology. Emphasis should be laid on use of indigenously-developed toys to develop conceptual skills in students. He also recommended that secondary schools with science labs should engage with farmers in their area for soil testing to create awareness about soil health.”

EdTech Startup Explore Interactive Receives $1M in Research Funding

Explore Interactive, an EdTech company that develops STEM-focused games for children, has announced that it has received $1 million in Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) funding from the National Science Foundation. The West Lafayette-based startup has been granted $75,000 from Elevate Ventures through the state of Indiana’s SBIR/STTR Phase II Matching Program. Besides funding, Explore Interactive has tied up with Mascot Hall of Fame in Whiting to bring its STEM-based educational content to students. Established in 2017, Explore Interactive uses augmented reality to teach Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) concepts to elementary students. The company’s first product in the planned MindLabs series allows students to work together on engineering and circuit design challenges.

Remarking on the funding and partnership, Amanda Thompson, CEO of Explore Interactive, said, “This funding will allow us to both build compelling content and bring augmented reality together with the engineering design process for the first time for young students. We are also excited to partner with the Mascot Hall of Fame to reach a wider audience through combining our interactive AR platform with the museum’s engaging approach to STEM through sports and entertainment.” Karen Anaszewicz, Executive Director of Mascot Hall of Fame, said, “We are thrilled to embark on this project which we see as a way to reach a broad and diverse group of students while fulfilling our mission to spark creativity, promote fun and engage in our communities throughout the world with our model of combining science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) educational principles and sport mascot entertainment.”

Explore Interactive is supported by America’s Seed Fund SBIR grants from the National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health. The company is based at Purdue University’s Research Park.

Pro. Shashi Kumar Appointed as Vice-Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh Technical University for The Second Time

Pro. Shashi Kumar has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Himachal Pradesh Technical University, Hamirpur for the second time. He has been associated with teaching and research work for over a period of 30 years. Governor and Chancellor of Technical University, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has issued office orders in writing regarding his appointment. At present, he is serving as Senior Professor, Department of Physics, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. He has served as the first and founding Vice Chancellor of the Technical University from January 7, 2011 to June 25, 2013.

The University invited applications for the post of Vice Chancellor twice and a total of 58 applications were received for the same. On the basis of merit, the government has put its final seal on Shashi’s name.

Perceived Design has Launched Experiential Learning App for Grade 11-12

Perceived Design, a Bengaluru-based online platform for businesses to create, share, and track training modules, has launched its learning app METAcademy (BETA), India’s first experiential learning app for grades 11, 12, and NEET UG.

Created by Uttam Kumar Pandey, Perceived uses its proprietary XR technology to uplift the students’ learning using 3D Interactive Interface and AR & VR experiences. The app intends to foster active learning amongst students. METAcademy LIVE Classes allow students to refer, explore, and learn by interacting and experiencing it. Its study materials are not just PDFs and handwritten notes but interactive 3D with labelled tags and short notes with auto reader mode.

Delhi government to set up Medical College, admissions from 2025

Aiming to boost the healthcare sector for infrastructure and workforce, the Delhi government has decided to set up a ‘world-class’ medical college in Dwarka. The admission process to this Medical College would start from 2025. This was announced by the health department on Friday.

Apart from the medical college, a 600-bed maternal and child care hospital equipped with state-of-the-art facilities will also be built on the campus of the Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka Sector-9 to ensure better infant care.

Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said the Arvind Kejriwal government is working continuously to provide better health facilities to citizens and reinforce the public health infrastructure. “The number of beds in government hospitals would increase rapidly during the next few years. We are also working to expand the capacity of various hospitals. The Kejriwal government is committed to its goal and is dedicated to serving the people, which is why affordable and quality healthcare is being provided to people of Delhi,” he said in a statement issued by the health department.

The Delhi government has decided to set up a medical college with the Indira Gandhi Hospital. The campus will be built in Sector 17, and it will boost the city’s healthcare infrastructure along with helping Delhi to emerge as a leader in the field of medical education, it said.

In the initial phase, only MBBS courses will be offered. However, courses for other medical degrees, including MD, MS, DM, etc., will also be offered after some time, it said, adding that special emphasis will be given on research, along with studies. Admission to this college will be done through NEET by the National Testing Agency on 125 seats in the first session.

The admission process will be completely transparent, and the faculty will also be of high standards, the statement said. The Indira Gandhi Hospital in Dwarka is a city government-run hospital which has the same facilities as that of a private multi-speciality hospital, the health department said. Delhi Health Minister Jain said there has been a major overhaul in the city’s healthcare infrastructure over the last seven years. Not only is infrastructure developing in the medical field, but “new doctors are also being prepared and trained, and the number of beds has also increased”, he added.

He asserted that the establishment of the new facility will enable Delhi to create a new “army of doctors”, and the college would also provide employment opportunities to students who dream of becoming doctors but have failed to secure admission due to “exorbitant fees of private medical colleges”. Special attention will be given to research at the Indira Gandhi Hospital, along with studies, so that it “emerges as a powerhouse of research and innovation”, he said.

IIM Shillong & NIFT Shillong sign MoU to promote professional growth

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Shillong on May 5. The MoU aims at promoting cross-disciplinary learning as per the National Education Policy 2020 objectives.

The MoU was signed on behalf of NIFT Shillong and IIM Shillong by Professor DP Goyal, Director IIM Shillong and Dr Arindam Das, Director of NIFT Shillong for an initial tenure of three years.

On the occasion of the MOU signing, Director IIM Shillong Professor DP Goyal, stated that the MoU will facilitate cooperation between IIM Shillong and NIFT Shillong, which will eventually promote professional growth both at the national and international levels in design and management, besides promoting cross-disciplinary learning as per the National Education Policy 2020 objectives.

The key areas of collaboration, knowledge sharing and joint activity cover student exchange programs, joint field trips, faculty training, mentorship, PhD supervision, joint research and publications, collaboration with foreign experts, and participation in workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Dr Arindam Das, Director of NIFT Shillong, while describing MoU’s history, stated that it opened up various possibilities of collaborations for mutual benefit.

Following NEP, UP school kids to get free coaching for competitive exams

Good news for students of government-run and aided schools in Uttar Pradesh. Students of government-run and aided secondary schools of UP will soon be prepared for various competitive examinations free of cost. The department of secondary education has prepared a proposal for this, as a part of implementation of the new National Education Policy (NEP)-2020.

According to the official information, students will not only be given information about the eligibility of various competitive examinations to be held at different levels in science, art, literature, music and other fields, they will also be prepared for the competitive exam.

In the proposal received by the secondary education department from joint director (secondary education), Varanasi division, Pradeep Kumar, it has been suggested to form a counselling cell of teachers in each school for this mission.

The members of the counselling cell will give information about the various competitive examinations to the students of their respective schools. Competitive examinations and possible career options would be suggested to the students after identifying their strengths and special talents, said a senior official of the state secondary education department.

The seven-page proposal that lists a detailed action plan for guiding students also gives a rough sketch of a time schedule listing the months in which different actions could be taken by the proposed counselling cell.

These include identifying talented students through a range of activities like holding a school level exam to assess general knowledge and command of science and mathematics in August second week, following it up with students making of mathematics and science models and teacher asking questions to assess their scientific temperament and then holding a school level exhibition of the models in first week of September and in October last week organising school-level sports competitions etc.

The government of Uttar Pradesh plans to fast track the roll out of all proposed 120 e-learning parks in several degree colleges. This move is projected to upscale tech-driven education among the state youth and is certainly a serious step to bridge the digital divide in education in the state.

As per the state government, the new e-learning parks will be equipped with computer, internet connection, and Wi-Fi facilities along with a digital library. The government plans to spend Rs 4 lakh per college in 120 colleges to make students tech-savvy. Monika S Garg, additional chief secretary, Higher Education Department remarks “In a new initiative to boost innovation in higher education institutions, the higher education department is working on setting up of 120 e-learning parks in the state to address the issue of digital divide.” The aim of these parks is to promote eLearning among students in rural areas where there is dearth of intent connectivity.

The USP of the parks is that teachers’ original notes and lectures are available in hindi and english languages and also in the form of Avs as per the syllabus of universities.

IBM rolls out ‘STEM for Girls’ programme in Arunachal Pradesh

Tech giant IBM has collaborated with the Department of School Education of Arunachal Pradesh to introduce ‘STEM for Girls’ programme in over 130 secondary and higher secondary schools across 15 districts of the state. With this association, over13,500 students in grades 8-10 will gain exposure to digital fluency, coding skills training, and life and career skills. It goes without saying that STEM i.e., Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, skills are seen as critical to enhancing employability across industries and are in great demand. The programme entails to uphold IBM’s commitment to skilling 30 million people worldwide by 2030. This initiative is part of a three-year programme between IBM and the state government, with Quest Alliance and Alombro Mayu Yaku Chi Amey Aroga (AMYAA) as the implementation partners, to escalate participation of girl children and women in STEM careers.  AMYAA will hire organisers to support the school processes and will be coordinating with the district education officials or implementing the programme.

IBM’s ‘STEM for Girls’ programme is currently running in 13 states that include Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Haryana. Other participating states are Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Uttarakhand, and Nagaland.

UP set to give a boost to education with e-learning parks, ABACUS-UP portal

The Uttar Pradesh government is all set to start the newly set up e-learning parks in 120 degree colleges of the state. The parks have been created to give a boost of innovation in higher education and make higher education campuses interesting.

The state’s Higher Education department has already completed the work of setting up 87 e-learning parks in the state and in the next 100 days, the department will complete the remaining work. This will greatly benefit the students in rural areas where the internet connectivity is slow and students have to face difficulties in online learning.

These e-learning parks will be equipped with computer, internet connection, and Wi-Fi facilities along with a Digital Library. Education activities will also get a boost with the facility of e-learning park, as well as it will be easy to disseminate government schemes in remote and backward areas of the village.

Meanwhile, the department is going to launch the ABACUS-UP portal in the next 100 days, through which various aspects of students and teachers will be linked. The state level Academic Bank of Credit ‘ABACUS-UP’ portal is part of NEP implementation by UP. All higher education institutes that come under the preview of NEP-20 have also been asked to upload data of students and teachers on the ABACUS-UP portal.

Grants to be approved by the department for research and development scheme will be allowed to only those colleges, whose data of students and teachers enrolled under NEP 2020 will be uploaded on ABACUS-UP portal.
